Sometimes, during my daily browsing of the Web for news and interesting angles on the sport science world, I get lucky and hit a home run. I stumbled on this great May 2007 Wired article by Jennifer Kahn, Wayne Gretzky-Style 'Field Sense' May Be Teachable. It ties together the people and themes of my last three posts, focusing on the concept of perception in sports.

Researchers using brain scans have found new evidence that biology—and not environment—is at the core of sexual orientation. Scientists at the Stockholm Brain Institute in Sweden report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA that gay men and straight women share similar traits—most notably in the size of their brains and the activity of the amygdala—an area of the brain
An interesting article has been posted on Yahoo News.
A Swedish research claims that straight women and gay men may have similar brains.
[...] scientists tracked connectivity in the amygdala, the region of the brain involved in emotional learning and in activating the fight-or-flight response. They noted strong similarities between gay men and straight women, and lesbians and straight men.

Gyananand - the joy of true knowledge! And no doubt a divine pleasure filled one's heart on hearing Gyananand speak. Even prose spilled out of his lips like a divine sweet song, and he could enthral huge crowds with his powerful speech. Thanks to the ubiquity of text on the Internet, not to mention the popularity of text-messaging on cell phones, we may well be reading more today than we did in the 1970s or 1980s, when television was our medium of choice. But it’s a different kind of reading, and behind it lies a different kind of thinking—perhaps even a new sense of the self. “We are not only what we read,” says Maryanne

There’s a scene that arrives early in Sylvester Stallone’s bloody 2008 action extravaganza Rambo (aka John Rambo) that should, in theory, help soothe the irritated souls of those who believed this unnecessary sequel wouldn’t capture the balls-out intensity of our hero’s previous adventures. The sequences, without giving too much away, is a brutal, uncompromising confrontati

A study found that cannabinoid receptor antagonists, a relatively new class of weight loss drugs, stunted the brains of juvenile mice. It is possible that such drugs could have similar effects on human children.
Several new anti-obesity treatments, including Merck's taranabant and rimonabant -- sold in Europe as Acomplia -- reduce appetite by blocking the brain's cannabinoid receptors. But they also have disturbing side effects that are only now becoming apparent.
Other researchers have found that cannabinoid receptor blockers interfere with neural connectivity in rat brains -- a phenomenon associated with depression in humans. The FDA has so far refused to approve Acomplia because it appears to cause anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Suicide victims who were abused as children have clear genetic changes in their brains, Canadian researchers reported on Tuesday in a finding they said shows neglect can cause biological effects.
The findings offer potential ways to find people at high risk of suicide, and perhaps to treat them and prevent future suicides.

Ever since mobile phones got popular on the worldwide markets, researchers have been trying to find a link between their emitted radiation and brain cancer conditions. However, given the fact that the achieved results are absolutely irrelevant, anti-mobile phone groups started to pinch other sensitive chords: gonad cancer. The researchers' explanations would always detail on the fact that, while using the mobile phone, users get the device dangerously close to the parietal bone. Moreover, while holding it inside the pocket, the handheld device spreads radiation fields around, which could trigger miscellaneous conditions related to the crotch area. However, all the studies conducted by now omitted an essential aspect of using mobile phones: the device almost always rests in the pal

Northwestern University researchers of washington have pioneered a technique called targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), which allows an artificial limb to respond directly to the brain’s signals, making it much easier to use than traditional motorized body parts. The technique, which is still under development, allows wearers to open and close their artificial hands and bend and straighten their artificial elbows nearly as naturally as their own arms.“The idea is that when you lose your arm, you lose the motors, the muscles and the structural elements of the bones. But the control information should still be there in the residual nerves,” said Dr Todd A Kuiken, a physiatrist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and professor at Northwestern University. He conceived the idea of t

As a New Yorker and someone that lives in Brooklyn a big victory was won today. Today the New York State Assembly rejected a "congestion pricing" proposal by Mayor Bloomberg(recently passed by the NY City Council)that would have charged cars and commercial vehicles 8 dollars and trucks 21 dollars to enter certain zones within Manhattan during peak hours from 6am - 6pm. The plan was seen as an environmental plan to reduce pollution. The money collected from congestion pricing would theoretically have been used to pay for upgrades and more service within the MTA.The NY Daily News reports the major contributing as factor to why the congestion pricing plan was killed: Its fate was sealed after Bloomberg refused to negotiate major changes in his plan to charge cars $8 to enter Manhattan below

So I started this blog as a way to track, record and share ideas along the way. Most of the topics on which I write about, you could find on the thousands of personal finance and investing sites currently out there. What I bring to it is a personal touch and unique perspective based on my own direct and indirect experiences. So what I write is what I live. New Statistics Canada figures show that along with tradespeople, there is a huge surge of post-secondary school graduates choosing Edmonton over trendy spots like Montreal and Vancouver. Why because smart people go where the money is!In Vancouver you can spend close to 70% of your income on housing, Montreal you can get a job but pay higher taxes than you would in Alberta.Or you could chose Alberta with the lowest taxes in Canada, highest salaries and enjoy quite good housing affordability. No wonder over 160,000 people have moved to Alberta over the last 7 years. With a higher quality of life and virtually limitless opportunities Alberta is where young smart professionals are choosing to make their home.

With the year winding down, the last few months have seen the addition of a number of new Stars to the QuirkStation. Including our new array of Trojan interns along with some fresh faces in the various departments, our reinforcements haven’t arrived a moment too soon.
While many workplaces start to wind down around the December period, at Quirk we don’t like to conform to the norm. As such we have hit a period of frenzied madness that has resulted in many a near-aneurism, and in many much-needed Friday drinks sessions.
I must admit, when the coffee machine finally kicked the bucket earlier on in the week, I did have my doubts whether we were going to make it. However, a short trip to find a replacement messianic device got us quickly back on track.
At any rate, I digress. Our new complement of interns are proving to be real lifesavers for both Tim and myself. They’ve helped us out quite a bit already, and Tim and I owe them a large measure of thanks for keeping our
I recently explored the ability of the brain to stay “fit” and avoid the possibility of Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive losses through Dr. Michael Merzenich’s “Brain Fitness Program.” According to revered international author, science journalist, PhD, Dr. of Psychology Daniel Goleman as interpreted by Gina Stepp author of familymatters.vision.org:
“People who are good at maintaining important relationships in their lives have always instinctively known what researchers are now discovering: good relationships are crucial to our health and well-being”
Dr. Goleman posits the following about the new field of Social Neuroscience: “Our interactions with anybody are a two way street where one person’s brain is setting the other person’s brain in any of a thousand emotional states.” Our brains are built to connect in ways we have never realized in the past. The “chatter” between brains is the basi
Interesting piece I saw on CNN. Here's where to catch it online.

They say that since the iPhone can't use their replaceable batteries, they put the iPhone users at potential risk.

Last week I talked about Mia's silliness. Today I'm bragging up my oldest daughter, Molly. She is fourteen years old and miles ahead of me in sophistication. Almost every day I have to ask myself where she came from, because the skills that she shows with ease most certainly did not come from me (or her father)! Molly's pulling off straight A's in school, tonight she's the female lead in the play One and All at the school, and on Thursday, she made the junior varsity cheerleading squad. There are days when she's at school 10-1/2 hours between practice for jazz choir and cheerleading, but she's managing it with ease. She just blows me away. But the thing that makes her shine the brightest in my eyes is how our relationship has grown in the last couple of years. Molly was prickly as a child. She didn't like to be hugged or cuddled, and she had the nickname Katie Ka-Boom for a reason. Middle school mellowed her, and high school seems to be refining her even further. Now I get regu

Ann Coulter’s most recent book, “If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans” will undoubtedly upset her most loyal fans. In fact, her latest work is...

“To do science you have to have an idea, and for years no one had one; they saw sleep as nothing but an annihilation of consciousness. Now we know different, and we’ve got some very good ideas about what’s going on.”~ Dr. J. Allan Hobson, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard.~Throughout the ages, scientists and thinkers have been trying to determine why people have to sleep. But so far all they know is what any parent of a newborn quickly discovers: sleep loss makes it harder to cope with stress, our thoughts more mentally foggy and our bodies more prone to get sick.Neuroscientists have long wondered if sleep is somehow tied to learning and memory, or other cognitive processes. Now new findings suggest that sleep does indeed appear to play a crucial role in sorting and storing our memories. Harvard and McGill Universities have reported that participants who napped after playing a memory game score significantly higher on a retest than those who did not sleep. “We think what
Black Dots(1978, lançado apenas em 1996)4 all TRIBES: downloadBad Br

No one mentioned that in 2006 America elected the Democrats because they promised to end the war in 2007, and they could do that. But no--now the radical position is two more years. And the rest of them—why don't we just elect another neo-con?They all endorse payroll tax increases to assure a stable Social Security system. And there is their big plan for universal health care. This is going to be paid for with all the money that is now being spent on Iraq. How totally asinine.First they don't plan on ending the war.Second, the Iraq War and the rest of the Republican big spending has resulte
Slashdot recently ran the story of how researchers have pegged some differences in brain function between the supporters of their two political parties. While the story itself is a yawner unless you care about American politics, some commenters grasped the idea and wondered what differences in brain function other groups might show.
It figures that there might be. Our brains evolve and change over time, conditioned to respond to stimuli in different ways depending on our experience. But certain brains with certain thinking patterns also seek out certain kinds of experiences. they affect each other, and over time the thinking patterns of the brain and the situations put in front of it reinforce each other. What you do shapes you, and who you are makes you do more of the same, which shapes you further.
Command lines, for instance. I’ve met command line users who will rattle off a complex string of characters for every situation. Other people cringe at the mention of one. So

This was not a good dream, either, though I don’t remember much of it anymore.
There was a guy who was experimenting on people and he would cut their heads open, in half, and examine their brains. There was no pain involved but it was creepy. Then he would do some more stuff and turn them into walking dead people. Not really zombies, and he wouldn’t really kill them, he would just transform them.
And then I remember being in an open top Jeep with Tom and Diane from the 4400. We had a baby with us (not sure whose it was, Diane’s maybe) and there was another baby that we stole because it held clues to the cure for this thing that the evil experimenter guy was doing.
It was not a good dream. I dislike bad dreams. It left me with a bad feeling in the morning.

Wellcome Trust scientists have identified for the first time how our brain's response changes the closer a threat gets. Using a "Pac Man"-like computer game where a volunteer is pursued by an artificial predator, the researchers showed that the fear response moves from the strategic areas of the brain towards more reactive responses as the artificial predator approaches. When faced with a threat, such as a large bear, humans, like other animals, alter their behaviour depending on whether the threat is close or distant. This is because different defence mechanisms are needed depending on whether, for example, the bear is fifty feet away, when being aware of its presence may be enough, or five feet away, when we might need to fight or run away.To investigate what happens in the brain in such a situation, researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL, London, created a game where subjects were chased through a maze by an artificial predator -- if caught, they would rece
Hmmz... Thought I'd steal a few minutes to update on what's going on and why I didn't update my blog for so long... Not that anybody is interested to know tho...

Amazon.comWilliam Calvin, a neurophysiologist and author of The River That Flows Uphill: A Journey from the Big Bang to the Big Brain, attempts to reclaim the study of human consciousness from physicists like Roger Penrose. Physicists, Calvin suggests, reduce the mind to subatomic particles and mathematical equations, whereas those in his specialty see the seat of consciousness and intelligence in higher levels of brain physiology--the neurons, synapses, and cortex. Calvin is a Darwinist who regards the unique level of human consciousness as the product of evolutionary forces that began with the ice ages two million years ago. The human response to this natural threat, he argues, was to develop mental faculties that allowed high-level communication and, thus, cooperation, leading to complex language capabilities and the distinguishing human characteristic of abstract thought.Sunday Times [London], 1997"Calvin is fizzing with ideas and this is a provacative, stimulating book." --This te
You’ve probably heard about omega-3 fatty acids. These are abundantly present in fish oil and are highly marketed as essential supplement to your food or your dog’s food for that matter.
Omega-3 fatty acids are added to just about every human food and the year 2007 may get labelled omega-3 fatty acid year for that matter. [...]

The scandinavian hotel chain Scandic decided in April, after public critique by an anti-religious activist group, to remove all Bibles from the chain's 23,000 hotel rooms. Instead, Bibles, Qur'an's, and other religious writings were to be made available upon request at hotel receptions. Now, the chain, after suffering hundreds of booking cancellations by Swedish church organizations, have reversed their former stance and will now allow the Bibles back in hotel rooms. The initial withdrawal of Bibles and the sudden decision to allow them back is not, according to Scandic spokesmen, a result of opportunism or pressure by different interest groups. Not very likely. The Scandic corporate people, in their efforts to be politically correct, have shown an unprecedented and deplorable lack of backbone. Making decisions, supposedly in the best interest of the company and its shareholders, is what these people are hired to do. Not to be weathervanes to the slightest whiff of criticism.
