This week we worked on removing overgrown vines and out of control ferns. Uncovering the Cycads that have slowly lost their space to the ferns and vines. We also exposed a Cat Palm that was barely visible from overgrowth along with a forest of Lady Palms some towering over 12ft.BeforeAfterBeforeAfterCome Watch my Plants Grow

This week seems to be the hardest work we have encountered yet. Aaron and myself are still working on the backside of the "Palm Walk". We arrived at 10 a.m. and did not leave until 3:30p.m. I don't know if I work this hard in my own yard, but the hard work will be worth every drip of sweat shed. So this week they asked us to remove a few trees, some invasive vines, and plants. Along with trimming

Anticipation has been building for a few weeks for this event. The one I attended back in Nov 07 was my first real plant sale as a new plant guy. This sale is were most of my first plants and palms came from. Sat. came and Aaron from AYiFtP , his mom, and myself got up early so we could go to breakfast before the plant sale opened. My fiancee, Monique is going for her Masters and had to go to school instead of being able to go. So we made it to breakfast and the diner messed my order up, by the time I got it,ate it, and paid for it was time for the sale to open. We take off and as I am turning on the road the plant sale is on, an undercover policeman pulled me over and said I was doing 58 in a 40. B.S. I have a 89 ford p.o.s. truck with no overdrive. Saturday I went with my buddy Aaron from A Yard in Fort Pierce Blog and we made the hour voyage north to melbourne to attend the 3rd annual FIT Botanical Fest. This was a fantastic trip. The vendors had some unbelievable deals and some of the palm dealers had palm trees I had never even seen before. There is nothing better than a rare palm sale. So I did pick up a couple palms and orchids from the sale. The first palm is a rare Lantania lontaroides or Red Latan Palm , this guy as a young palm has very distinctive red stalk and red veins running in the leaves. The next palm is a Chambeyronia macrocarpa , or red leaf palm, flame thrower watermelon form and this palms new leaf is red when it first appears. It is given the term watermelon form because of the crown having a red tint to i

Getting the colour right is one of the main challenges for a botanical artist. Consequently it can also be one of the aspects of which causes the most worry to aspiring botanical artists.

This Sunday's day trip took us to Jindai Botanical garden. On the western side of Tokyo, in Chofu-shi , it was established by the Metropolitan Government in 1961. Over 4,500 varieties of plants are artfully planted in the 425,000 square meter gardens. These fountains with surrounding rose gardens are in front of the large greenhouse. It is the end of the Chrysanthemum season and Jindai, like Shinjuku Gyeon last week, had put on a spectacular display. This is just one plant:There was also a display of bonsai Chrysanthemums. This rather large hornet was busy pollinating the camellias. There are several different routes to the gardens. From Shinjuku we took the Keio Line to Chofu station. We took the number 14 bus from bus stop number 14 at the North exit and got off after 10 minutes at the stop just after the Jindai Temple (one of the oldest in Japan) on the left.Admission is 500 Yen for adults. Open from 9:30am to 5pm. Closed on Monday, except when it's a holiday when it's closed on the

Today we went to the botanical gardens. It was so nice to walk around in nature for awhile. The day was absolutely perfect. The sun was out, the humidity was low, and it was crisp out. Botanical gardens are places where a enormous variety of plants are developed, usually for scientific purposes. Not all botanical gardens are open to the public, but the ones that are serve as a great educational tool, as you will be able to study many different plants up-close. While research certainly takes place on these plants, a botanical garden also serves as a place for conservation, keeping these plants protected in the process. Here are some of the best botanical gardens in the world.1. The New York Botanical Garden is one of the most well-known botanical gardens in the world. Situated in the Bronx borough of New York City, this garden sits on 250 acres and contains 50 gardens and plant collections. Yesterday I attended a workshop in botanical illustration at the Harcourt Arboretum (part of Oxford University's Botanical Garden) run by Valerie Price, an artist trained in scientific illustration who has done work for, among others, Kew Gardens. Although you might not guess it from the very loose paintings I've posted here recently, I've always been fascinated by this type of detailed, highly accurate drawing and painting. I very much enjoy doing this style of work, even though I'm nowhere near being capable of the incredible detail the real experts can achieve. It seems to be unusual for people to enjoy producing both very loose and very detailed work; I suppose it doesn't really make sense to try to work in different styles, but after all I'm only doing it for fun, not to make a living! My experience of taking classes in watercolour is that teachers invariably want you to work larger, wetter and looser, so it was a refreshing change to take a class with someone that thoug
