      Speaking of Borders
No, not that kind (although I really do want to seeUnder the Same Moon (La Misma Luna) & check out the great thing Tommy Lee Jones had to say about the fence or as he calls it the 'complete disaster'), actually I'm referring to the really cool Borders Media site.I was never into big chain book stores. As a kid all my books were second hand buys from flea markets or hand me downs from my sister and cousin, or library loans. In fact, for most of my childhood in Spanish Harlem, the only big bookstore was about a two mile radius away, downtown on 86th Street. It wasn't until I was a teen that I ventured that far and then later discovered the smaller bookstores tucked away in Harlem and the Columbia University area. I happily spent the money I earned babysitting my way through college on 'b

Borders amazing vouchers - pt 2
As always I was extremely excited to find yet another voucher from Borders in my mailbox. I'm already very happy today as its the 1st of April, the day I get to play many pranks (4 down, 3 to go). I do love hearing from borders and today's voucher had me singing! To signup for Borders email vouchers, simply walk into a Borders bookstore and ask to be put on their mailing list. Can you think of a really awesome genuine voucher you can send out to your clients? it has to be amazing though, or don't bother. It will do you more harm than good to be half generous.

Damascus lines its borders with troops ahead of semi-boycotted Arab summit
DEBKA -- Yemen and Jordan sent junior representatives, following the lead of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco and Oman. Lebanon boycotted the meeting in protest against Syrian “meddling” which has deprived the country of a president since November. Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki was too busy with his offensive against fellow Shiites in Basra. But Baghdad sent its Shiite Arab vice president Adil Abdul-Mahdi. Iran sent FM Manouchehr Mottaki after backing away from Syria’s original plan to invite its president.Syrian president Bashar Assad has inexplicably responded to the partial boycott of the Arab League “summit” by lining up army units on his borders with Iraq, Lebanon and Israel, as well as pushing contingents across the border into Lebanon proper.DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s military sources re

      Is Borders Going Under?
Nooo! Tell me it isn't so!According to this, it seems that Borders is under some financial difficulties and may be selling out (via). I hope that what ever happens, they won't be closing down the Borders. As it is, I don't think there's enough book stores. It's not like we have a Barnes & Nobles here. There was a Dymocks outlet at City Link back in the day but that closed to give way to MPH. Even then, the size of the store shrank. I know that there's always Kinokuniya but I need a variety of book stores because I find that each book store specialises in different genres of books and to be limited to just a few genres just makes my brain explode.I have an addiction for book buying and I can never get enough of them. So, anyone has any suggestions where I can get good (new) books and new rel

      Borders Call Notes
Finally got around to reading the Borders (BGP) earnings call and the take away for me at least was very positive... A couple of things struck me. 1- Guidance: Despite a 2% comps sales increase number last year, guidance for the current year was in the words of CEO George Jones "very conservative", "given the current environment". 2- Cost cutting: DVD "shrinkage" (read:theft) was at $20 million last year. The company has both made changes to security measures and will be reducing the... Continued at Todd Sullivan's ValuePlays

      Who Will Buy Borders?
It seems there are four options for a purchaser of Borders (BGP). 1- Barnes and Noble (BKS) This has been talked about fr a few years now. The theory being that a combined entity would be better able to compete with Amazon (AMZN) without the cannibalization of the foot traffic market the two currently compete for. 2- Indigo- Canada's largest bookseller has been mentioned as a possible suitor. This has some interesting story-lines to it. Indigo leads in market share in Canada. Here is the... Continued at Todd Sullivan's ValuePlays

      Borders and Plastic Bags
As I am assuming most of us did, last week I took advantage of the Borders 40% off coupon and stocked up on some books. As I paid for them, the sales assistant asked me if I would like bag - and then proceeded to charge me for the plastic bag. And I'm not happy about this. Now, before continuing, let me state that I don't have a problem at all with the reduction in plastic bag use. Its a good thing. I take my coles green bags the supermarket, I'm a big fan of a big handbag and am generally happy to pop my shopping in it, in favour of a plastic bag. But I'm also a booklover. And I like my books to look as new. Allegations of book nazisim have been levelled towards me in the past, however my response is that the librarian didn't teach us in primary school to bend our pages, cock the spi

      Will Borders Survive 2008?
Things have not gone very well for Borders Group for a while now and with today's announcement that the corporation is considering putting part, or all, of itself up for sale one has to wonder how much longer the Borders bookstores will be open for business. Will they combine with Barnes & Noble, resulting in fewer locations and fewer choices? Will they sell off only their international

      Buying Borders
Well, that didn't take very long. "Ask and ye shall receive" I guess? So yesterday I posed some questions about Borders (BGP) and today, answers came piling in. Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management Borders's largest holder, has entered into the following agreement with Borders. - A $42.5 million secured term loan to Borders at a 12.5% annual interest rate; the loan matures Jan. 15, 2009. - Pershing committed to a "backstop purchase offer" that gives Borders the option until... According to this story on Bloomberg, Bookseller Borders is in trouble and may be on its way to bankruptcy. If you hold a Borders gift card, you may want to redeem it now before you become a victim to what happened recently to gift card holders of The Sharper Image or Bombay Company after both declared bankruptcy and suspended redemption of all gift cards.
