I was very disappointed in this wine; it was thin and unappealing, with some harshness as well. I tested it by letting it sit overnight, corked, and the next day it was slightly more palatable; this indicates that the wine might be acceptable if it matures in the bottle for a few more [...]

For most of us, getting our hands on the best of the 2005 vintage in Bordeaux is unlikely; the price of this exceptional vintage is well out of reach in the higher echelons of wine production.
For InterWined.com’s standard, that is only rating wines worth drinking, usually in the £5 to £10 range, 2005 Bordeaux would [...]

Not long ago, I attended the Bordeaux Spring fashion show. I must say, I was disappointed. The theme was A Night At The Opera, but the collection lacked the glamour, the sophistication, the theatricality of opera clothing. The collection was rather bland. Bright colors abound, but the shapes were blousy and unflattering. There was an alarming number of bubble skirts (I thought we were done with those). I did like the long silk dress at the end, but even with that, I was underwhelmed by the collection. Have a look, decide for yourself.

When last I mentioned one of my classes at Tria Fermentation School, announced here to coincide with Tria’s email blast, the course was sold out before most of my readers even had a chance. Based on the popular demand for that course (which is scheduled for the Tuesday following Thanksgiving), the folks at Tria have asked me to repeat the session in December. This time around, I’ve asked them to let me promote the course here before they send out invitations to their email subscribers. So, act fast and you may just be able to score a seat or two. Here are the details:Interested in learning about Bordeaux? In moving beyond thinking of the region’s wines simply as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot? I’ll be repeating my November Bordeaux class, the fourth in a series of regional wine courses, on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, at Tria Fermentation School in Center City Philadelphia. Good news Columbus. Being ”Green” in Columbus means you ought to drink the French Bordeaux!
Choose the Chateau Rothschild over the Gallo …. or the California Merlot… Andrew Leonard wrote “How green is your bottle of red?” in ‘How the World Works’ on Salon.com
“And now for a truly important question: What is the greener option, in terms of carbon footprint, for a hypothetical wine-drinking citizen of Ohio: a California merlot from Napa county, a cheap Australian bottle of Yellow Tail shiraz, or a French bordeaux?”
“Green” Columbus Drinks European Wines? No ….
“This means that east of Columbus, it is less injurious to drink wine shipped across the Atlantic than trucked from Napa. In New York, if you want to “drink locally” — think France.”

So last year, I signed up for a wine class.
I went twice.
The class met six times.
See, it was in Westminister, and well, I could never make it there on time. So I'm trying again this year. With Louise, of Al & Louise, my "English friends." Last night was the first class. And it was all about Bordeaux.
As an American, I know very little about French wines. Next time I'm home, I'll take a photo of the wine aisle in the local supermarket--it's California as far as the eye can see (and some Oregon and Washington), with some Australian wine mixed in.
I have trouble keeping Bordeaux all straight. But here's the gist: Bordeaux is mostly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Cabernet Franc in the reds. Among(st) the whites, it's Sauvignon Blanc or Semillion. Who knew?
Oh, and when talking about Bordeaux, you should throw around Right Bank and Left Bank a lot. (If you're that sort of person who needs to throw things around.) I sorta zon
Do you think you’ll be hungry for something to do during the brief lull following Thanksgiving? Interested in learning about Bordeaux? In moving beyond thinking of the region’s wines simply as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot? I’ll be teaching the fourth in a series of regional wine courses on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, at Tria Fermentation School in Center City Philadelphia. This time around, we’ll be discussing wines from Bordeaux. It’s a big topic to knock off in one course, so think of it as a broad introduction. We’ll be covering both whites and reds from a wide array of Bordeaux’s many sub-regions. Tria’s lovely classroom space is limited to 24 students and seats sell out quickly so register online today. I hope to see you there! If you’d like to take a class but can’t make it on the 27th, be sure to check out the rest of the schedule at Tria Fermentation School. They’ve just released their new course schedule which runs through the en
A pair of reports out of the United Kingdom suggest that wine could some day replace beer as the favorite drink of British pub regulars.First, a study commissioned by French wineries and funded by the French Ministry of Agriculture states that by 2039 more men will be ordering wine at pubs than calling for pints. The report says that many British men already have a pint at the start of the evening before shifting to wine. The primary reasons given were that a second pint of beer gave them a bloated feeling (68 percent) and the wine selection in the pub was better than the beer offerings (52 percent). The one statistic in the French study that has to trouble U.K. brewers more than any other is that 72 percent of the 1,000 British men surveyed said they consider wine to be a more sociable drink than beer. Before you dismiss the study as purple stained French propaganda, consider the numbers just released by the British Beer and Pub Association that show the British are drinking less for t

Lovers of wine and European culture alike have received a boost to their travel prospects with the news that Lufthansa is commencing services between Frankfurt and Bordeaux this year. The German carrier will introduce a thrice-daily service between the two cities on 28 October this year as part of its winter timetable. This is the latest addition to Lufthansa's extensive network to France, with Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Mulhouse, Nice and Toulouse already served by the airline.
My previous winetasting group is now defunct, what with crazy summer schedules, my no longer working with the majority of its members, and my current job location in the East Bay, with my residential address hopefully soon to follow. Therefore, I was quite pleased to find out about the study session at Rosenblum, where a group gets together weekly to explore different wine regions. Several people have been cramming for the sommelier exam and other such qualifications, and some just want to learn more for the heck of it.
The idea is for each person to bring one or two wines of an approximate value indicative of the area in the attempt to taste liquid representations of the land.
My first venture into this assembly was to be Bordeaux, probably one of my least travelled areas of France. I have not had many opportunities to taste wine from this region in my ten-year span of enological adventures. A couple of cheap-ish bottles here and there that didn’t do much for me and once a v

How many times have you heard Carmina Burana??

If you are looking for fine French wine and food, consider the world-famous Bordeaux region of southwestern France. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a red Merlot from an internationally renowned producer.
Among France’s eleven wine-growing regions Bordeaux anks first in acreage with about 50% more land devoted to vineyards than the second-place Rhone Valley. But it’s more than just a question of acreage and volume. Bordeaux is widely considered as one of the top wine producing regions of the entire earth and has been for centuries. The wine reviewed below comes from the Pomerol area on the right bank of the Garonne River, which divides Bordeaux in two.
Bordeaux produces over seventy million cases of wine per year, about 85% red, 12 white, and the rest rose. That works out to more than two million cases of rose wine per year. I don’t remember ever tasting a Bordeaux

NOTE on BORDEAUX REDS: Left-bank wines are based on Merlot, and Right-bank wines on Cabernet. Good reasons for this: on the Left bank, it's a little higher and cooler and the soil is clay, limestone and sand. On the other side, it's a little warmer and the soils are gravelly. Both styles of wine use a bit, or a lot, of Cabernet Franc in the blend, which can lend a vegetal or green and occasionally "unripe" flavor. Here are some really good, available, and value-priced wines from the premier wine region on earth.Chateau Turcaud Entre Deux Mers 2006 (Sauvignon Blanc)Fabulous Frenchy. Noticeable, bright green pepper aromas in a very pale straw color package. Crisp acidity, bright but not tart. Light-bodied but with a nice mouth feel and great balance. $11 and a value at twice as much! Charmes Goddard Blanc 2005 (Sauvignon Blanc)Horse of a different color. A richer, more acidic and slightly sweeter SB, with a round, creamy mouthfeel, vanilla aroma a hint of butter. About $31.La Violett

When 3,000 bottles of some of the world's best wine goes missing where should the police look first? In France earlier this week the management of Seignouret Frères, one of the oldest negociant houses, reported they were missing $1.17 million in 2004 grand cru Bordeaux, including cases of Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, Latour and other top labels. The wine had been in Seignouret Frères' warehouse for a very short period of time. Police believe wine savvy thieves spent several hours picking out the wine they wanted and loading pallets on a truck. They left behind lower priced wine and concentrated on famous makers. There was no sign of a break in. Because of tracking numbers on the bottles it is believed the wine is being shipped outside of France.
