There is a lot of intense rhetoric about gas prices from Republicans. As usual, they take a complex problem.... offer a one sentence solution.... and beat it to death. Are we really that naive?Michele Bachmann is "focused like a laser beam" on reducing the pump price. Maybe she needs fewer "laser beams" and more reality checks. MinnPost's Ron Way cites the real bottom line he
In a pretty classic case of putting the cart before the horse, Ron Harris, the Collin County judge who lost his re-election campaign in the 2006 GOP Primary and has since been serving as a consultant to T. Boone Pickens, has announced he will seek the District 8 seat in the Texas Senate presently held by Florence Shapiro (R-Plano).
Of course, Harris says, he’ll only seek the seat if Shapiro

"I hear over and over again, ‘Mr. Pickens, America has changed. I’ll never be able to accomplish what you have.’ If that’s what you’re thinking, you are dead wrong. There’s more opportunity for sucess today than ever. America remains the greatest country in the world. There’s plenty of opportunity to go around."
"When you look at my record over the last half of the 1900s, a pattern of on-the-mark class emerges - sometimes my timing was off, but my intuition wasn’t. Whether the issue was the overcapitalization of the oil industry, shareholder rights, open trade policy with Japan, or a national energy policy, we did make sense, even if prevailing wisdom didn’t agree with us at the time.&q

Last week T. Boone Pickens offered to pay one million dollars to anyone who could disprove even a single claim from the Swift Boat Liars. I wish I had heard that as it sounds like easy money. Of course if you believe Pickens would actually make good on his offer there’s some email with business offers from some Nigerians which I’d like to forward on to you.
On Friday I posted John Kerry’s letter accepting this challenge. Pickens quickly reneged and has issued the following statement:
Dear Senator Kerry:
So glad to hear from you regarding the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth political ad campaign, and an offer I made public at an American Spectator dinner in Washington, D.C. last week. I am intrigued by your letter, and am certainly open to your challenge.
My concern at the Spectator Dinner was, and continues to be, that you and other political figures were and are maligning the Swift Boat Veterans, and I want to prevent this important part of American history from being
Nearly four years after being “swift boated,” former Democratic Presidential Nominee John Kerry has a public wager with Texas businessman T. Boone Pickens–one of the funders of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth about the group’s claims. Via KHOU:
Sen. John Kerry, whose 2004 presidential campaign was torpedoed by critics of his Vietnam War record, said Friday he has personally accepted a Texas oilman’s offer to pay $1 million to anyone who can disprove even a single charge of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
In a letter to T. Boone Pickens, the Massachusetts Democrat wrote: “While I am prepared to show they lied on allegation after allegation, you have generously offered to pay one million dollars for just one thing that can be proven false. I am prepared to prove the lie beyond any reasonable doubt.”
Kerry, a Navy veteran and former prosecutor, said he was willing to present his case directly to Pickens, a Dallas resident who provided $3 mill
There’s been increased mention of the Swift Boat Liars recently, especially with the report that Kerry has gathered further information to debunk their claims. The evidence against them was already overwhelming, making me wonder how much better Kerry’s current evidence is.
In the past the Swift Boat Liars and the Republicans who spread their lies acted with regard to the truth. Not only do they ignore all the evidence disputing the claims, but many continued to claim that Kerry hadn’t released his records even when they were posted on the internet for all to see. It also didn’t shut them up when the media reviewed the actual records and verified that they were no different from what was posted on line. AP now reports that Kerry is going on the offensive, taking up one of the backers of the Swift Boat Liars on their offer to pay $1 million to anyone who can dispute one of their claims. Kerry’s full letter on this offer has also been posted:

Moody river, more deadly than the vainest knifeMoody river, your muddy water took my baby's lifeLast Saturday evenin' came to the old oak treeIt stands beside the river where you were to meet meOn the ground your glove I foundWith a note addressed to meIt read "Dear love, I've done you wrong""Now I must set you free""No longer can I live with this hurt and this sin""I just couldn't tell you that guy was just a friend"I looked into the muddy water and what could I see?I saw a lonely, lonely face just lookin' back at meTears in his eyes and a prayer on his lipsAnd the glove of his lost love at his fingertips..
In the years immediately prior to the British Invasion, only one performer rivaled the chart dominance of Elvis Presley, and that was Pat Boone. With his trademark white buck shoes, perfectly combed hair and gleaming smile, Boone was the very essence of wholesome American values, and at a time when the rise of rock & roll was viewed as a sign of the apocalypse, he made the music appear safe and non-threatening, earning some 38 Top 40 hits in the process. It's fitting that his achievements rank closest to those of Presley; after all, both claimed the sound of the black R&B culture for their own, in the process straddling both sides of the color line and popularizing a form of music which otherwise might never have gained widespread acceptance. Of course, while Elvis -- with his flashy suits, swiveling hips and suggestive leer -- remained persona non grata throughout many corners of mainstream America, Boone was embraced by teens and parents alike; his music polished rock's rough edges

Boone County school officials will meet with Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher's chief of staff this afternoon to discuss the district's financial viability following a new county property reassessment that could cost the district up to $5.2 million in state support. The hastily scheduled meeting in Frankfort is the latest development in the ongoing battle to get additional state funding for what has become - by far - the fastest-growing school district in the state. This week, that battle fast-forwarded when administrators got word that a state emergency reassessment of commercial property values in the county could cost the district $5.2 million in state funding."We live with the reality that for every two dollars we pay, only a dollar goes back to Boone County," said state Rep. Addia Wuchner Wednesday. "For the majority of the state's districts, they put in 75 cents and get a dollar back."After meeting with Boone school officials earlier this week, the Florence Republican arranged a mee
This from the Cincinnati Post. While it's good news for Boone County homeowners, a recent revaluation of commercial property could spell serious trouble for the county's school system. In fact, unless something changes, it will mean a $5 million budget shortfall for the Boone County Schools, officials say. They will be scrambling today to nail down the numbers and come up with options in preparation for a press conference on Thursday."We don't have a contingency fund of more than $5 million to make up for that particular deficit," Assistant Superintendent Randy Poe said. The problem began in October, after Boone County Property Valuation Administrator Ron Burch committed suicide, and state officials started an emergency reassessment of property.Their examination of all 2,400 commercial properties in Boone County resulted in an increase of $1.1 billion of property value over last year, a jump of more than 37 percent. The reassessment means that residential property owners will likely pay
Boone County School Superintendent Bryan Blavatt knows Frankfort's political landscape is as treacherous as a field full of holes. This isn't just any hole, though. Specifically, it's the one on Longbranch Road between Union and Burlington, where the district has finished excavating for a new elementary school but can do little more until more funding is secured for the project. The district, the fastest-growing in the state, has averaged 700 new students annually for about the past decade and is bracing this August for nearly 800 more. That will bring its total enrollment, now the third largest in the state, to nearly 18,000.Blavatt lobbied the legislature earlier this year for money from a state surplus to build new schools, but none was awarded.Since the district is also building a fourth high school to open in 2008 and has exhausted its bonding capacity, Blavatt had hoped the special session that began - and abruptly ended - Thursday in Frankfort might somehow have provided a wind
I'm not sure what's wrong with our dog but he kept throwing up. It happened yesterday afternoon. I didn't remember giving him anything that makes his stomach upset. I told my dear hubby about it and he will bring him to the vet today. Poor dog. He won't even eat his food :(
Lots and lots of people are very unhappy with NBA Commissioner David Stern over his handling of the Suns-Spurs mini-fight in which three players were suspended. It seems that professional baseball players are also a part of that group of unhappy campers.Aaron Boone in the Herald:“I’m livid. I went to bed in a bad mood and I woke up in a bad mood. I’d like to challenge either [NBA commissioner David Stern or league vice president Stu Jackson] to a fight for a blatant lack of human judgment.”Wow. We knew Boone was a big basketball fan (and has a hot wife). After all it was basketball he was playing when he blew out his knee, costing him an entire season with the Yankees. But we didn't know his passion for the Suns ran so deep.Of course, what all of this bravado really showed us is... Aaron Boone is still playing in the Major Leagues?(The Tip: SporTech Matter)

Superintendent: "You guys tell us to be patient, but it's been 16 years."Boone County Schools was given $1.2 million Tuesday by the state's School Facilities Construction Commission for operating costs of its $44 million high school, scheduled to open in August 2008 on Longbranch Road.Boone County is the third largest school district in the state and growing by 800 students a year. In 1998-99 there were 12,826 students. There are now nearly 18,000 with more enrolling daily.Roughly 4,500 students use portable classrooms each day in the district's 20 schools. But money from the state to help keep up with that growth hasn't been there.Blavatt said Boone is dead last of the 175 districts in state funding per pupil because of the way the funding formula is set up. He said Boone is three to eight schools behind what the state considers an appropriate number for the district's population. This from the Cincinnati Enquirer. More on recent growth in Boone County from the Cincinnati Post.
