The Baby Boomers are approximately 78 million people that were born from 1946 to 1964. To put the Baby Boomers in perspective one only needs to look at the basic statistics that illustrate the immense size and power of this demographic. For instance, approximately 7,918 people in the US turned 60 each day in 2006. The Bureau of the Census estimates that there will be twice as many persons age 65 or older in 2030 as there are today: 69 million (20 percent of the population) versus 34 million (13 percent of the population). Cultural destinations have seen a 50% increase in sales during the period from 2000 to 2005. This increase has been atributed to the desire of “Baby Boomers” to visit more cultural attractions such as art galleries, museums and historic buidlings. More towns and regions are trying to capitalise on this trend by marketing their natural and historic attributes to encourage visitors. I think it is more general trend toward getting more out of your leisure time and holidays especially if you have the free time, good health and disposable income of a typical “Baby Boomer”. They want to experience something that is unique, interesting and authentic at their destination for example somewhere such as Besalu in northern Spain.

Baby boomers face a bleak financial future. This all too common line seems to be finally sinking in, as many of the baby boomer generation are beginning to take a proactive approach to their retirement planning. As well as increasing personal superannuation contributions, many have begun to look at direct investing in both the share market and property markets. Unfortunately many of the property marketeering companies operating in Australia have sought to take advantage of this, and have targeted their marketing campaigns at them. Two tiered marketing, where property companies sell investment properties (often off the plan) to interstate buyers, who are unaware of the current genuine market climate at highly inflated prices often $30,000.00 to $50,000.00 above true market value, have been rife in Australia for several years.
