Life Insurance Planning
WHAT IS IT?
A life insurance policy is a contractual promise by an insurance company or beneficial association to pay a specified amount of money to a designated beneficiary when the insured person dies. The contract is between the insurance company and the policyowner who pays premiums in exchange for the promised death benefits. Frequently the policyowner is the person

Indystar.com's Lori Borgman, a little bit tongue-in-cheek, I hope, describes what it's like to be a bookstore widow (something my wife has experienced for too many years to count). I know that I see a lot of myself in what Borgman says here about her husband. A few years ago, I dreamed of chucking the old day job and making our living as a full-time book scout. In fact, I did pretty well two
A cold wintry day brought nothing much to do for Tom so he got in his 4X4 and decided to go and visit the local bookstore and see the new features. It wasn't the first time he had been there, he could be considered a "regular", if there were a term for that sort of thing. As he turned into the back parking lot of the store he saw there were no other cars there, so he thought, "oh well, solitary agai

Lethe meandered into a pastry shop and was awestruck by the glistening tiles and reflective surfaces. The clicking heels of gaunt, middle-aged Spanish women and their chattering maids bewitched him and soon he was following an ultra-chic mommy down the black marble aisle. She paused to look into a shiny casement and he hung over her, also peering into the glass.

It’s funny how rarely I buy books these days. I get so many at work that I certainly have enough floating around, but I do really enjoy walking through a real bookstore, touching the spines, reading the reviews, and smelling their lovely smell–a scent that is somehow both old and new at the same time. Yesterday I was at a bookstore in Bishan, walking between shelves, looking at books, then I felt someone was looking at me. I looked up and saw this girl... Our eyes met, wadeva.Ok what's so special about this girl? She is also a NUS student, and I believe she's from Arts. She boards the bus to school from the same bus stop as me, and this is the 4th year I am seeing her. Tall, long hair, usually

The other night I had a while to kill so I stopped at the local adult bookstore on the way home. I bought a $1.00 token and proceeded into one of the video viewing booths to enjoy some good porn to pass the time. I closed the door but did not lock it just in case someone decided to join me for a while.I had just put the token in when the door opened and a blond haired gentleman stepped in and lock
The current economy is being effected by a number of different factors and businesses of all shapes and sizes are feeling the effects. A trend that has effected many retailers, in combination with the general downward slide of consumer spending, is the adjustment to online retailers, namely Amazon. I will focus on Amazon being that as of the close of 2007 it held the title of the world's largest o
While I've grown dependent on a laptop and iPhone, I'm sick of looking at laptops and phones on tables in cafés, even mine. I'd rather look at a cup of coffee, a spoon, a plate with pastry, and a book. I'm nostalgic for the company of people reading books in cafés. In the olden days, many of us liked to shop for books and then go to a favorite café to read or write. We never worried about the a

Signage, the bane of every retail store’s existence. It often seems like customers don’t read signs at all. A good sign can increase business and make your store easier to navigate. A bad one can just be a big waste of money.

Over the last few years I've taken to marking passages from most of the books I read, even novels, so that I can more easily find the quotes again when I go back looking for them. I had mixed feelings when I learned of a publicity stunt perpetrated by another indie bookstore in Kansas City this weekend. According to CNN, Tom Wayne, the owner of Prospero's Books in Kansas City, organized a bookburning of some of the books that Wayne claims that Prospero can't sell, "in protest of what he sees as society's diminishing support for the printed word." I have much respect for Prospero's Books, which is the premier used bookstore in Kansas City, known for its support of local authors. I'm reluctant to criticize another independent bookstore in a metropolitan area that is seriously deficient in indie bookstores. Wayne and his partner may be making a valid point about the decline on book reading in the United States, but the national publicity from this stunt not o

Several customers told us that we were the 'hardest people to find what we were offering to sell'! Now that's a very shocking and slap-you-in-the-face kind of statement. So we are doing all kinds of new things to make it easier for our customers. We broke down our e-book stock listings into five or six bundles per page to make it easy to browse page-by-page through our listings. So...if you have a moment please take a run by the e-BookStore and see what you think. We do want to hear from customers about the changes. Did it help or did it make it worst? Let us know within the next couple of days. Suggestions, complaint
I was on my way back from Sacramento, on a business trip. I was sitting there driving, and getting hornier and hornier, just thinking about sex.I got so horny I decided to find an adult bookstore and look around and maybe buy some porno to look at.I stopped in Stockton (another fairly large city) and found a nice-sized bookstore. Well, if you've ever been in one, you'll know that they have everything you can imagine, from straight stuff to gay stuff to anything in between. I was walking around, flipping through magazines, when I came to a back area where they had these little booths that you could go into, and watch about 5 minutes of almost any X-rated movie you can imagine...the more quarters you put in, the longer you could watch. Over each door, there is a light that comes on when some

Treehugger Dan's Bookstore and Cafe reflects two passions of its founder and owner Daniel Swartz - environment and books. The combination of these two lead to the creation of this unique bookstore in Budapest. The bookstore offers a wide selection of well over 4000 second-hand English paperbacks. Besides fiction books, you can find non-fiction titles from many different fields such as environment, gender studies, politics, history, sociology, p

My dad had gotten book vouchers for Borders bookstore earlier this month. We finally made the trip there for some book shopping.
My initial plan was to buy a journal, which I was to use as a planner. However, after looking around, I decided against it. The journals were way too pricey and I could have gotten cheaper ones elsewhere. As a result, I was sauntering down the book aisles aimlessly.
Towards the end of the ’shopping’ experience, I was stuck between getting Investing for Dummies and a mini Bonsai kit. My motivations behind the book are clear. I have an interest in investments. What about the Bonsai? What benefit could it possibly bring? One word, peace.
I was feeling inner turmoil and wanted to calm my mind. Though I’m aware that peace can only be found within oneself, I wanted a physical reminder. I want to look at the bonsai during crazy episodes, and be reminded to seek the calm within. It’s just too easy to be sucked into a whirlpool of pa
Many, many people come into the library with a variety of questions which, some of the time, have nothing to do with the library. This morning, a family visiting for the weekend came in to ask when the student bookstore is open. Apparently, there is no sign on the door. I told them I could find out for them.
The Lynn website made me into a liar. I knew I had found the hours on the website before, but it took some diligent searching. It is so hidden that searching “bookstore” will not help you find it. Even now, two minutes after I found it, I can’t remember how I did it (unfortunately, I didn’t find it in time for the family; they left because it was taking me so long). It vanishes into obscurity very quickly!
Okay, I found it again: You have to go to “offices and services,” then there will be a link to the bookstore. I was terribly confused when I saw that there were no hours for the store on the bookstore page. However, I found on the left hand si
Well well well…Barisan Nasional has created another brand new feel-good propaganda to wins the hearts and minds of Malaysians yesterday. This time around they want to make Malaysians feel as if there is a big solidarity and friendship among their component parties. :-)Nice try. A very nice try, Barisan Nasional.I’m referring to that book published in honor of Dato’ Seri Samy Vellu by the MPH Group. The book was launched yesterday by Dato’ Seri Dr. Rais Yatim.I’m not that interested in the book really. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Samy Vellu. He has his shortcomings of course but we cannot deny the fact that he has done tremendous service to the nation. The major thing that poor Malaysians are not happy with him is his infamous and legendary toll hike announcements. Toll hikes are no small matter, folks. Toll hikes would affect other economic factors and soon you would see prices of other items and services being raised too! Today such domino effect has pr
The owner of a Christian bookstore in the Gaza Strip who was found dead this weekend was publicly beaten by Islamic gunmen accusing him of spreading Christianity, witnesses and Palestinian Arab security officials said. The body of Rami Ayyad, director of Gaza's only Christian bookstore, was found Sunday riddled with gunshot and stab wounds. He had been abducted the night before as he closed his shop, a local Christian group said.Gaza-based Islamic groups had accused Ayyad, a Baptist, of engaging in missionary activity. His bookstore was firebombed in April, and since then Ayyad had told relatives he was receiving death threats from Islamists.Witnesses and security officials associated with Hamas's so-called Executive Force told The New York Sun that Ayyad was publicly beaten a few blocks from his store before being shot to death. Hamas security sources said Ayyad's body showed signs of torture.
I have to wonder if members of the U.S. Congress or President Bush ever receive reports like this in their daily briefings. The myth of “Islamic tolerance” lives on despite all the evidence to the contrary. I am not blind. From Mission Network News:
Gaza (MNN) ― Gaza’s minority Christian community was badly shaken over the weekend after the director of the Christian Bookstore run by the Bible Society was found beaten, stabbed and shot to death. Rami Ayyad was 29 years old and an active member of the Gaza Baptist Church.
E3 Partners works with the church, and E3’s Tom Doyle received a call from 29-year-old Rami Ayyad’s pastor Sunday. “Rami was kidnapped Saturday after he had closed the Bible Society. He was taken away by a group, and the next morning they threw his body out somewhere around the Bible Society. He had been killed.”
Ayyad is survived by his wife, who is pregnant, and two sons. According to Doyle, no one has claimed responsib
Shopping in a bookstore demands a certain level of concentration and the ability to tune out the distractions created by your fellow shoppers. I like to lose myself in at least a couple of pages of any book that I'm considering for purchase and, if I can't find a nearby chair, I'll stand in place for however long it takes me to decide if a book is coming home with me or not. The way that some bookstores carve out "special" sections for black authors has always irritated me because it seems so condescending both to the authors and to black readers. Whether the bookstore manager realizes it or not, a subtle message is being sent that only black readers will be interested in these books and that black readers really aren't interested in reading anything but books written by black authors. I wondered how the authors themselves felt about being partitioned into their own little ghetto. Thomas Sowell, "A Man of Letters" author, addresses the practice today in his Townhall.com column. If Rachael Ray had been black, there are bookstores where her cookbook would not be displayed in the same section with all the other cookbooks. It would be displayed off in a special section for black authors. This means that many people who were looking for cookbooks would not even see Rachael Ray's cookbook, much less buy it.This is not rocket science but it seems to have escap

How many of you have dreamed of some day owning or operating a small bookstore of your own? If they are honest with themselves, I doubt that there are very many book bloggers or book blog readers who haven't squirreled that idea away as something to return to when their finances and free time will allow them to turn that acorn into the real thing. It's something that's been in the back of my mind for years, something that I saw as a way of really enjoying retirement from the corporate world while earning a few bucks for my pleasure. Unfortunately, now that "retirement" has suddenly slapped me in the head, that little acorn seems to have rotted instead of sprouted into the dream I was hoping to live. While the day of the small independent bookstore may not yet be over, I find the odds to be so heavily in favor of failure that I almost certainly won't be risking any of my savings in an attempt to live my bookstore dream. I've seen several such ventures open and close in the last

A few days ago we were in the Hyundai Department store. We checked out the bookstore located in the basement level. Just like bookstore we visited at COEX Mall, the foreign magazines and books were fairly expensive.

On a side note, I am officially sick. Symptoms right now include a stuffy and runny nose, congestion and a headache. Thank goodness it's the weekend. Goodnight. ZZZzzz.......*sneeze*
