Linda Grant is my choice“These novels are intensely readable, each of them an extraordinary example of imagination and narrative.” In his press conference, Michael Portillo, the chair of the Booker jury, does not utter the word 'literature' even once. He does not emphasize on the originality or voice of any writer. Evidently, the focus of the Booker award has shifted from the quality fiction

Show the above photo to some friends and ask them to name the American actor; they should easily identify Morgan Freeman. However this is actually Booker T Washington. Is the resemblance startling or what?
It’s the elephant in the corner really, isn’t it? Last week’s announcement of the Booker prize longlist has been one of the main talking points for literary minded souls, and not just in the Commonwealth and Ireland. Delays in the launch of this blog meant that it was hardly worthwhile posting on the longlist - [...]

READERS have voted Salman Rushdie's 1981 novel Midnight's Children the greatest Booker-prize winner of all time. The "Best of the Booker" was awarded to the controversial British author to mark the 40th anniversary of the Booker prize, regarded by many as one of the world's most prestigious literary prizes. The 61-year-old author won the 25th anniversary "Booker of Bookers" prize for the same novel

Chris Booker has been fired. The popular Morning Host of radio station Q102 has been fired by Clear Channel. The station reportedly is making a move more to be more “music intense”.
Also fired are producer Blaire Galaton and sidekick Angi Taylor.

Booker seems like he has a pretty good personality. He looks excited to be drafted by the Miami Dolphins in this video. Little did he know he would end up being traded to the Eagles 1 year later.
If he doesn’t make it in football, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him doing some kind of broadcasting.

Washington Academy, effective July 1.She will replace Peggy Petrilli, who left as principal last Aug. 26 after parents complained to Superintendent Stu Silberman that Petrilli allegedly mismanaged school funds and was allegedly unethical in administering and scoring standardized tests.Petrilli alleged that she was forced to leave the school because she is white and parents wanted a black principal. She has filed a lawsuit and is seeking $75,000 in damages.Brown, 35, who is black, has bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Georgetown College.Early last week Kentucky School News and Commentary was informed that the internal report o

On Wednesday, KSN&C posted a story from the Bluegrass Institute that quoted Fayette County Superintendent Stu Silberman on the Booker T Washington Academy matter.Asked to explain what happened to the Academy to cause such dramatic improvement while Petrilli was principal, Silberman stated that it was "a bad example." Then he said the school is currently "under investigation."Despite former BTW Principal Peggy Petrilli's own statement and assurances from Silberman, speculation persists as to whether she resigned or was forced out....it is evident that despite my best efforts, and the fact that I did the best I could do, I recognize that I could not build trust with a group of parents...It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to leave Booker T. Washington for the sake of our students," Petrilli said in her statement. But was she given the option of NOT resigning? Silberman told KSN&C,"It never got to the point where Peggy ever asked to return to BTWA. As soon as we shared th
British author Robert Harris, while admitting that there is no way that he would ever win the Booker Prize, decided to tell the world how little that bothers him. In an interview with Lucy Cavendish, he condemned the whole process:
"The Booker Prize is evil," he says. "No great authors in the past, from Dickens through to Kipling, Waugh, Joyce, Orwell etc would have had anything to do
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reports that Robert Huffman (King Booker) quit WWE when he was told that he was to be suspended for 60 days, as a punishment to the Signature Pharmacy bust. He was believed to have failed a Wellness Program test before, hence the 60 days suspension instead of 30.While WWE is still trying to negotiate Huffman's staying with them, they're going on under the impression he's done. The two sides had been having troubles recently, with a major setback being John Laurinaitis' call to go with Florida for a developmental territory - where WWE would start from scratch - instead of going with Booker's already established PWA, which WWE had been loaning wrestlers to. After they made the call to stop that, Booker went to his friends at TNA and booked them for his shows instead, which didn't sit so well with anyone backstage, but they couldn't say much having pulled WWE talent from PWA.Booker is pretty much set financial
In a stunning development, it was confirmed by Fayette County officials Friday that Peggy Petrilli would be leaving Booker T. Washington Academy two weeks into the third year of her reformation project. It is my understanding that the Herald-Leader has the full story. This morning, they ran this innocuous piece instead. (In fairness, I hear that Raviya Ismail is out of town. This story was written by a staff reporter. H-L may not be done with this.) The principal of Booker T. Washington Academy has told Fayette school board officials that she will be leaving the elementary school, Superintendent Stu Silberman said late Saturday night. Peggy Petrilli, 59, told Silberman last week that she will either resign or retire after he spoke to her about concerns raised by parents, Silberman said. “It caused her to decide she didn’t want to go back there,” he said. Silberman declined to discuss the issues raised by the parents. He said they’re a moot point since she’s leaving. Petrilli d
Some people follow sports; I like to second-guess book awards. Here's a new one. The Man Asian Literary Prize is the counterpart of the Man Booker International Literary Prize, and will choose its first winner in November. Galley Cat says that twenty-three candidates, including 11 from India, are up for the inaugural prize, worth $10,000. The award is backed by the same company that sponsors the prestigious Man Booker Prize. I haven't read all the authors, but I really like Xiaolu Guo, author of the Orange-shortlisted A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers. She heads up the longlist for this prize with a new novel, 20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth. Read an excerpt by clicking the title of this blog entry.

I am not sure everyone remembers when Lorenzo Booker was a high school football player at St. Bonaventure High School Ventura California. He was so good that he was invited to make his college decision live on ESPN. Obviously his college career did not meet the huge expectations, but he played pretty well when given the opportunity at Florida State, averaging 4.8 yards per rush and 8.1 yards per reception.
Lorenzo Booker knows what it takes to be a great football player. He is a focused and dedicated football player. In a recent interview Booker said, “I knew that the town was going to be serious about playing football, and I am. That’s why I traveled so far to play at Florida State because I wanted to be around people that took it serious like me, so I’m excited.” He is also pretty pumped about playing in the Dolphins offense.
Despite growing up as somewhat of a superstar he is relatively humble. He is excited about being able to take care of his mother financi
DAVIE, Fla. — Shortly after Lorenzo Booker learned he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins, the Florida State running back became excited about learning nuances of the NFL game from Ricky Williams.
Instead, he’ll essentially be replacing Williams.
Not only does Booker have the same locker that Williams occupied in the Dolphins’ training complex, he’s also likely be Ronnie Brown’s backup in Miami’s backfield and fill the role many expected Williams to have before
