      Still Unemployable: Barry Bonds
Ah, Barry Bonds. The Orioles and several other teams could use him; however, despite his abilities and numbers from 2007, I say this -- he may not find a job anytime soon.I figured that he'd sign on with someone before the season; alas, it is anything but the case. Now, the union is trying to look into why he's not been offered a job.Good luck. From the AP: The Major League Baseball Players Association has expressed concern to the commissioner's office over the lack of offers to Barry Bonds, asking for additional information about the offseason's free-agent market. The union did not go as far as to file a grievance on behalf of the outfielder, 43, who remains unsigned and hasn't received any offers since the San Francisco Giants decided not to re-sign him last year and he became a free agent

I’ll promptly name this scandal Wrightgate II. The back peddling of Barack this week is extremely interesting considering he tried to legitimize Wrights comments on his sweeping speech on race. Now that Wright got his revenge on Obama, Barack is now cutting him loose. One has to feel bad for Obama’s grandmother since he threw her under the bus to save Wright. Jeremiah Wright might actually have the power to sink Obama's candidacy. His campaign may not sink in the primaries, but at this point I think his general election bid has just been closed. In Philadelphia, Obama’s speech on race was supposed to start the discussions on how race relations in America can improve. Obama also tried to suppress the public’s outrage about the insidious comments that his former pastor of 20 yea

Convertible bonds. Information on investing in convertible bonds.
One of the most exciting features about a convertible bond is the ability to convert it into shares of stock at a par rate. What does this mean, you ask me? Well I will tell you. What this means to you is that you may invest in a convertible bond, say a growing financial convert that you are not sure you want to throw in financially with yet. By investing with a convertible bond you can in effect, delay your decision to buy shares and still maintain an investing interest in the future of the company. What a great way to play the safe bet. This is one of the top reasons why savvy investors make the convertible bond play. It makes practical sense and allows for big financial gains later. That undoubtedly means that the financial concern is doing well, so the next smart step is to own some o

Check out this interactive chart from Bloomberg which looks at the 80 AAA bonds in the ABX.  It compares the ratio of credit support to collateral at risk for these 80 bonds.  It makes it pretty clear that 74 of 80 of these funds fail the test used by the ratings agency’s for investment grade i.e. above two times credit support.  Yet, miraculously many of these bonds still remain AAA according to the rating agencies. 12 of the bonds in the ABX, mostly those issued in 2006 and 2007 have collateral at risk which exceeds credit support.  Check out The Prince’s post encouraging the rating agencies to come clean and proceed with across the board downgrades of mortgage related securities.  This is getting ridiculous, don’t you think? Fed Needs to Buy Agency Mortgage Bonds
10 Feb 2008 - In the latest sign of how broken the credit markets are, PIMCO’s Scott Simon is calling for the Federal Reserve to go into the market and purchase agency backed mortgage bonds.  To get a sense of how bad things are in the Agencys market take a look at this earlier Bloomberg article where William O’Donnell, a UBS AG government bond strategist, writes that the markets have become "utterly unhinged".  He goes further to say that a lack of liquidity has "led to stunning air-pockets in price levels".  Yields on Agencys (government sponsored AAA MBS issued by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae) rose to a new 22-year high relative to U.S. Treasuries.  Banks have stepped up margin calls and concerns are growing that the Federal Reserve may

...Great article from David Lennon at Newsday. I really hope that this is just the papers trying to get readers. I think Barry would be a terrible fit, regardless we need a left fielder and Barry Bonds can't play in the field anymore.David Lennon had this to say:Barry Bonds in a Mets uniform? As the team considers its options for leftfield after losing Moises Alou to hernia surgery, the idea of bringing the controversial home run king to Shea Stadium is one that definitely intrigues the front office. Despite all the negatives associated with Bonds, and there are many, the boost to this lineup would be immeasurable. It's just that the Mets simply aren't that desperate -- yet.David Wright had this to say:"That's one thing that Omar has done a fantastic job of -- not only bringing in good p

      Mets and Barry Bonds?
...This comes direct from MetsBlog.com:At his ESPN.com blog, Buster Olney believes it time for the Mets to discuss signing Barry Bonds following the recent wave of injuries.Olney writes:“Among all of the alternatives the Mets will discuss, the acquisition of Bonds would be the only way the team would acquire a high-impact hitter without gutting a farm system already depleted by the Johan Santana and Brian Schneider trades. Landing Bonds would be a cash-only proposition. You pay and he plays, and hits, at an extraordinarily high level.”On the trade front, Olney thinks the Mets match up with the Tigers, who need relief depth, for Marcus Thames.By comparison, Bonds had an OBP of .480 and hit 28 HR in 340 at-bats last season, while Thames had a .278 OBP and hit 18 HR in 269 at-bats.Accordi

Barry Bonds’ testimony was finally revealed
Barry Bonds' testimony was finally revealed on Friday, after nearly five years since his December 4, 2003 testimony. The player is currently facing perjury charges, and his 5-year-old testimony could become part of the case if Bonds is to go on trial.According to the testimony, Bonds says he had never knowingly taken performance-enhancement drugs, and pleaded not-guilty, but now faces perjury charges. The player, who is now a free agent and is still looking for a team for the 2008 season, said the creams and lotions prosecutors said to be steroids were just something his trainer gave him to relief pain. What the prosecutors are now trying to determine is whether Bonds was indeed not aware of taking performance-enhancing drugs, or was he trying to cover up for his friend and trainer Greg And

      Are Municipal Bonds Safe?
Some financial publications and newsletters, including Money, and Morningstar have recently started recommending Municipal Bonds, touting their safety and noting that depending on one's tax bracket, their yields are higher than those of federal bonds. The yield, after tax savings, is indeed better than what you can get on federal debt. The safety, however, I'm not so sure about.Municipalities issue debt to pay for various things, like road repairs, public transportation, education, etc. They pay the debt mostly out of the tax dollars they receive from property taxes, sales taxes, and use taxes. All bond issuers are given ratings, and this includes municipalities. To sell their municipal bonds, townships, school districts, etc, need top ratings, like AAA or AA.Many municipal bonds are sold

Municipal bonds (Munis) as a ETF.
This rainy season is attracting attention to municipal bonds from several reasons. FED is cutting interest rates which boosting bond prices. If Democrats win Presidential election, most probably they enhance muni's tax advantages. Apart from, single A rated munis are having 80 times lower historical default rate (0.0084) than triple triple AAA corporate bonds. Merrill Lynch municipal index has in 2007 3,29% return which is less than half of average return during last 19 years. On the other side, faith in triple A munis was hit by CDO losses at Ambac (ABK) and MBIA (MBI).Municipal bonds can be bought indirectly via fund or ETF. Among funds I'd point out Oppenheimer Rochester National Municipals (ORNAX) and less aggressive Legg Mason Partners Managed Municipals (SHMMX).This segment is just d

Vietnam bank to sell VND600 bln in bonds on Dec. 12

The bank would auction the debt on December 12 and issue them on December 14 for maturity on December 14, 2022, the over-the-counter exchange said in a statement Saturday. Proceeds from the issue will go to the construction of high-ways, bridges and be used for various state projects. The bank, one of Vietnam's two policy lending banks, has failed to sell any of its bonds with 10-year and 15-year maturities in the latest two auctions in November and September. He was ordered to return to court on Feb. 7.***In spite of his legal troubles, Barry Bonds may be back in a baseball uniform in 2008. Considering he led the Giants in homers in limited playing time, along with an incredible .OPS, it wouls be prudent for a team to sign him.Well, he might be closer to the Bay than would think if the Oakland A's re-sign him.According to the San Francisco Chronicle: If they had decided to rebuild, the A's wouldn't have a spot for Barry Bonds. However, the club is intact as the winter meetings end, and Oakland is considered the hot pick to sign the free-agent outfiel

      Bonds Pleads Not Guilty
By Stephen RhodesAs has been expected all along and as reported by Josh Peter of Yahoo! Sports, Barry Bonds entered a not guilty plea through his attorney on Friday to charges of obstruction of justice and four counts of perjury that began with his denying in front of a grand jury that he knowingly took steroids; this in essence will force a legal showdown with the federal government. No trial date was set in the hearing; however, one of bonds' attorneys, Michael Rains, said that if the case went to trial, he thinks it will take place either next fall or winter. Bonds' next court appearance is scheduled for February 7, 2008. This all began on Bonds' indictment on the felony charges on November 15, and the arraignment Friday in U.S. District Court was Bonds' first appearance in a courtroom since 2003 when he testified in front of the grand jury that heard testimony and reviewed evidence about the illegal distribution of steroids through the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative ,also k

Marion Jones and Barry Bonds Scapegoats??
We all know the stories, and the facts that have come to light. Yes, Marion Jones should have her medals stripped. I'm a bit on the fence about her having to return all the prize money, though, because she did show up and participate, and all those involved in her camp were paid from her winnings....hmmm, that's a slippery slope, that one. But, my real question is, who else is being investigated with such diligence? Is it ALL the athletes, or just a chosen few? Here we are in 2007 and they're STILL after these few folks like bloodhounds. Why only them?I also sense some type of unfairness in the whole Barry Bonds situation as well. Once again, I ask, WHO ELSE is being put through this same scrutiny to such a degree? Are the powers that be just pissed because he broke Hank Aaron's home run record? That he now goes in the history books? What about all the other "dirty" players? We know they're out there, suiting up every game as usual. Is it only the golden, chosen few, o

This Is How Bonds Career Ends Not With A Bang But With A Whimper
How sad is it for the "National Pastime" that two record holders of two of the most important categories in MLB could be banned from Cooperstown? Pete Rose of course was deemed ineligible by the late MLB Commissioner Bart Giamatti for betting on games. How much do you think that current Commissioner Bud Selig is salivating over the prospects of banning his personal nemesis Barry Bonds from Baseball? And of course that would mean that the men who hold the records for most hits, and most home runs would be banned from Baseball Valhalla. When the indictment came down on November 15, charging Bonds with perjury, and obstruction of justice, his playing days came to an end. Remember he is a free agent no team has any financial, legal, ethical, or moral obligations to him. He is adrift in a very unkind sea, that is highly unlikely to give him any solace. With these charges hanging over Bonds head no team in the Majors will have any thing to do with him. The players union can't help him, sayin

Barry Bonds and Bud Selig: BFF?
Barry and Bud. Bud and Barry. The mere mention of their names together brings thoughts of romantic interludes, harps playing, and piles of cash and horse tranquilizers spread out on a bed.Bud Selig has to be the lamest excuse for any sports commissioner in history. After years of dodging the issue of Bonds and steroids, crossing his fingers while counting his cash, Bud Selig's reaction to the announcement of Barry Bonds' indictment is telling. He has no reaction. I'm not sure if Selig actually has a pulse. He's either the world's greatest actor, doing an academy award worthy job of playing a buffoon, or he isn't acting.Bonds has been indicted for lying about taking steroids. Any use of a performance enhancing drug is banned by Major League Baseball. Word is Selig claims his hands are tied because Bonds hasn't failed any tests for Steroids, although he did fail an MLB test for amphetamines. Lynching Barry Bonds
So Barry Bonds lied to a grand jury. As if that has never happened before. But we are constantly reminded this is quite serious because our justice system is only about the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.Apparently the general public does not realize that everyone in a courtroom is lying. The state's witnesses fudge, and the defendants tell preposterous tales. The lawyers know it , in fact they are often suborning perjury. The Judge knows it, but he pretends it is not happening. And I am quite certain the jury knows it, as they attempt to shovel through the pile of crap they have been fed, and try to figure out what actually happened. So lets not go into shock over the revelation that Barry Bonds may not have been totally forthright with the grand jury. The thing is he was set up. The prosecutors granted him immunity to force his testimony. Otherwise Bonds would have exercised his right to remain silent. Usually this is only done when the prosecutors are gettin
