This will increase the potential destinations for Air New Zealand in all directions across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, such as Bombay, Beijing, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires and Chicago. It will also make the routes much more viable than with the larger and less fuel efficient 747s.

Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) unveiled their new 787 Dreamliner a few days ago. Their stock chart looks pretty snappish as well. With the rising fuel prices over the few years and decreasing profit margins for airlines, I believe that Boeing’s new Dreamliner is a much better play than Airbus’s gamble on their behemoth A380 super jumbo. My two favorite pictures of the 787 I’ve seen so far.  Anyone else catch the fact the debut was on 07-08-07?  Neither did I.  Like others I believe the 787 will far surpass the Airbus A380 in orders and future use.  When you consider the trend of aviation over the past years the desire for efficient mid size aircraft is obvious.   People don’t want two flights a day from N.Y. to L.A., in which case the A380 would be the perfect “ocean liner” type aircraft.  But they want six or seven flights they can choose from departing every few hours. The A380 is impressive from a scale POV, and it’s efficient for packing in the “human cargo” on a Sidney - Dubai - London route for example, but for overall passenger comfort and airliner efficiency I don’t see how the 787 can be beat.  As an private pilot, aviation buff, and airplane geek I can’t wait to experience it.  And the cockpit?  Straight out of X-Men :) Time Magazine Art

An eager photographer catches the 787 Dreamliner in the buff It has been a long time coming, but the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner has rolled off the assembly line. Charles Conklin -- an avid aviation enthusiast -- managed to snap some pictures of a fully assembled Dreamliner sans paint. According to Flightblogger, the official roll-out ceremony for the Dreamliner is on July 8 with the first delivered scheduled to take place in May of next year. The production run of aircraft is completely booked until 2013 at the earliest. The Dreamliner is the next generation of airliners for Boeing and makes use of composite materials in 50 percent of its body and wings. The use of composite materials has helped Boeing keep the weight down which allows the Dreamliner to be 20 percent more fuel efficient than its closest rivals. Airplane manufacturer Boeing and London airport Stansted have joined forces to explore various methods to making air travel more eco-friendly. Just the Flight writes Experts from Stansted were involved in a recent trial with Boeing to see how a system where parked aircraft are connected to the mains electrical supply can be redesigned to reduce noise and carbon emissions. The trial was successful and may result in the new system being rolled out at airports and airlines across the globe. “It’s a great start and shows me what potential we have to make significant improvements in the environmental impact of Stansted Airport through collaborative efforts across the aviation industry,” commented Andy Jefferson, environment manager for BAA.
