Food, music and art draw crowds to Japanese celebrationBy Brian MalnesAlthough the cherry blossoms have been off their trees since April, their beauty was celebrated this weekend at Denver's Sakura Matsuri, the city's Cherry Blossom Festival. The annual festival was Saturday and Sunday at Sakura Square on Lawrence Street, between 19th and 20th streets, and was the biggest in the 36 years the event
This is a set of ATCs that I've created for a swap with a very talented friend of mine from Norway. I want to make these ATCs to be special and carries meaning in them. I will explain each and everyone of them in detail.Friendship ATC:1) I've di

Shinjuku Gyoen is one of the most famous and popular places for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in Tokyo. The park itself is huge and literally has thousands of cherry blossoms trees, and a few different kinds. It might even be a little too big as I felt like I didn’t really know where [...]

I just took this photo when I got home today. Not long after it rained mixed with snow. Now it’s clear again. Don’t you just love the spring in Oregon? Splendid.
well-- at first glance, this particular shot seemed to have some major problems for me: the blossoms were perfectly exposed but the temple doors and wall were way, way underexposed. and then, for whatever reason it dawned on me: that's what had struck me about this particular shot in the first place: the blossoms had seemed so brilliant as to be on fire, emitting a brilliance that dimmed everything around.
Chidorigafuchi (Chidori-ga-fuchi) is part of the moat that surrounds the former Edo Castle and is one of the most famous places in Tokyo to see cherry blossoms. If you like, you can rent a row boat or a paddle boat. To be honest, there isn’t too much to say about this place that [...]

Magnolia Questions and AnswersAre there many different types of magnolias? There are about 80 different species of magnolia that are native to the eastern United States and southeastern Asia. Over half of these are in cultivation around the world and many selections and hundreds of named hybrids have been made by breeders seeking better features. Why should I consider growing magnolias?Frankly, because they are easy to grow and relatively pest free. Most have large showy flowers and attractive large leaves. Many are evergreen and attractive year round. There are many great shrub-sized magnolias for the smaller garden.I have a magnolia that was planted in the wrong spot, and I need to move it. Can this be done?Magnolias have a very unusual root system. Unlike most other trees and shrubs, the
Last month, this is what I saw out of my window in Crabtown, and it was good:I truly loved this insane shelf of snow and ice. I wish I could convey to you how amazing and deep and wide it was. But while my photos aren't fab, I'd bet even a pro photographer couldn't have captured the absurd scale of this thing. It was like a sand dune. Only upside down. And made of, uh, snow. Okay, so that doesn't make sense. Maybe another picture will give more immediacy to the frosty 'tites teetering at the edge of my vision. Okay, so still inadequate to the sight itself. Anyhoo, this snow-ice-bedangled thing hung outside the window next to the table where I worked, begging me to stare at it and think on it. And so I did and I have, and here is my poem:Oh! Giant white lip, how do you hang?A mini-mount ben

This is the time of year when Cherry trees burst into full color with their extravagant blossoms. In some countries, such as Japan and China, observing Cherry trees in bloom is almost a national pastime. These images come from a Cherry tree that I found a few weeks ago in Laurelhust park (Portland Oregen). The day was a bit overcast and it was about an hour and a half before sunset so the sunlight was not overhead. The tree was also shaded by some rather large Sequoias and Douglas fir tree which made for a pretty soft light.Portland, Oregon has a number of great park similar to Laurelhurst of which my favorite is Mount Tabor park, located near 60th and Yamhill in southeast Portland.

Our peach tree is in full blossom right now, letting us know Spring is on its way. More than once I've contemplated removing the tree, but each year the fruit seems to be a little bit better. The tree itself is tall and ragged looking. Prior homeowners butchered into a scruffy trunk with two straggly branches, one that goes straight up and another than droops down. It is the 'Charlie Brown
I have installed KDE 4.0 RC on OpenSUSE 10.3. I was just checking the installed version and found that we have an updated version (3.97.2-4.4) of kdebase4 and almost all kde4 packages in YAST. A simple YAST update took me to a much better looking KDE desktop. The new KDE 3.97 is beautiful, more stable and a little slow. Now I have a NVIDIA 6200 with propriety drivers and Compiz Fusion works very well with KDE3. KDE4 comes with its own desktop effects. Though as of now I am not able to use them, but will soon find a way. For the time being I am loving my current desktop. KDE4 now comes with a few desktop wallpapers, I really liked the KDE4 black wallpaper. Next was the time to configure some plasmoidsKDE4 took up all the desktop icons from my KDE3 desktop and displays them as plasmoids. Henc

If you are like many people during the holiday season, you send out Christmas and Holiday cards at this time of the year. Since I am trying to Buy Handmade this season as much as possible, I have found some really beautiful handcrafted holiday cards on the web. Some of my favorites are the original designs of Nea Blossoms. Simple yet elegant, these would be a wonderful way to send warm wishes to all your loved ones. I also love the cute gift tags...what a perfect way to add a final touch to your wrapped presents. Now, if I could just get myself motivated to start writing those cards....
There is a school of thought that says that if you are going to get something done properly, then you have to do it yourself. It is a principle at the heart of many a great business and it is one that Ramakrishna Karuturi knows well, one that this week...(read more)
"The real fast is the blossoming of the inner heart. Fragrance must emanate. The qualities, conduct, behavior, and disposition that accompany this blossoming make no sound. Light and fragrance must dawn in the inner heart. The one point which is God must resplend.Do fast, but make sure the heart blossoms; make it fragrant. Tim Reid saw Ann McCullough and her friends looking at him from across the room, laughing. He thought their laughs were because they were making fun of him. Little did he know, McCullough only giggled because she was admiring him instead of paying attention in their high school freshman history class.“He used to sit across the room from me so I actually just thought he was really cute. He just always smiled and never talked,” McCullough said. Despite his notion that he was being made fun of, Reid thought McCullough was attractive and tried to get the courage to meet up with her after class. “I was nervous talking to her,” he said. McCullough’s friend since fourth grade, Alli Matheis, a junior at Indiana University, remembers Reid being quiet and staring with McCullough at him across the room. A mutual friend kept the two connected over the summer, and after a few group hangouts and parties, on McCullough’s birthday of her sophomore year of high school, Reid asked her out.
For decades, the Austrian town of Güssing was a forgotten outpost not far from the rusting barbed-wire border of the Iron Curtain. Now it's at the edge of a greener frontier: alternative energy. Güssing is the first community in the European Union to cut carbon emissions by more than 90 percent, helping it attract a steady stream of scientists, politicians and eco-tourists. "This was a dead-end town and now we're the center of attention," said Maria Hofer, a lifelong resident, as she bought organic vegetables at a farmer's market. "It seems like every week we read about new jobs from renewable energy." Güssing's transformation started 15 years ago when, struggling to pay its electricity bill, the town ordered that all public buildings would stop using fossil fuels. Since then, Güssing has fostered a whole renewable energy industry, with 50 companies creating more than 1,000 jobs and producing heat, power and fuels from the sun, sawdust, corn and cooking oil. Red, black and white are popular color schemes in lots of different bedding fabric patterns, but now I'm seeing black and white checks intermingled with lucious red cherries! Who would've ever dreamed that fruit print fabrics would migrate from kitchens to teen bedding? Any ideas on how to work with fruity teenage bedroom decorations? Is the tropical headdress of the Copa Cabana coming back? Will we be decorating with bowls of bananas, grapes and cherries? Strange and just a little disturbing. I was always taught not to take food out of the kitchen!

Remember the last time I posted about the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival? Well, it was a case of bad timing because it was the first weekend of the festival and we arrived late in the afternoon--it was screaming busy. I was determined to give it another go but this time I decided to take an alternate route to see the blossoms. After exiting Yeouido station I walked directly towards the Korean National Assembly (which I have yet to see up close and personal). By walking through the National Assembly, I was able to bypass the busy entrance that we tried to enter the first time around. Let's take a look at what I was able to see this time around.Walking towards the National Assembly I passed a bunch of trees growing inside vertical-shaped rectangular blocks. Looks are very important in South Korea and you will see mirrors everywhere, from subway stations to other random parts of the city:These guys were part of a roller blading club that does tricks and other fancy things that normal pe

When out painting landscapes on location (plein air), artists encounter issues with changing light and having to work fast. Sometimes paintings need little fixes in the studio, such as picking out pieces of leaves that fell off trees, bumping up a few highlights, or adjusting color/value in spots to account for viewing with indoor lighting. I have several paintings done on location that have been waiting patiently in the studio for small fixes of one kind or another.
This painting was done last spring in the Italian Gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, and has finally received a few touch-ups. The cherry blossoms there are nothing short of stunning. I can't wait for late April to roll around so I can paint cherry blossoms from life again!

The garden has freshened up after 82 points of rain that the heavens decided to bestow on us recently and is lovely after such a long dry spell. My garden does lack flowers other than the odd one that decides to burst open. The farmyard has many native Eucalyptus gum trees that surround the two houses and sheds on the property. It helps keep the wind down though with age the bottoms of the trees are thinning out allowing a lot more blustery weather to whip around the garden.Tomorrow I will post an old gum tree with its twists and turns that I painted many years ago and was the beginning of my love affair trying to perfect a way to paint them. Until then I hope you enjoy these two photos today.Steal it!Steel it!........take note of the ants crawling over the blossoms technorati tags: Eucalyptus trees, tree, ants, flower, blossoms, macro flower, garden
