Hardly surprising then that Blonde Redhead operate out of the capital of cool New York. It has been a long road for the band and their 7th album ‘23’ came a full 14 years after their debut. And as you'll hear on ‘Spring and by Summer Fall’ the band have lost none of their enthusiasm, not even wild horses (fact) could put the brakes on them on this form. And those Sonic Youth comparisons persist, something that in other hands could become an albatross but Kazu Makino and brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace have the nouse to carry it off with distinction. As if getting a spread in a popular home décor magazine just a month prior to this album's release wasn't enough of a tipoff, Blonde Redhead have come a long way since their days of mimicking Sonic Youth's brittle art-rock. Clanging guitars have been replaced by warm synthesizers and soft strings, while Japanese singer Kazu Makino's thin voice has become a ghostly moan on the grandiose opener and title track of the New York trio's seventh full-length release, 23. Their last one, 2004's Misery Is a Butterfly, was a lovely throwback to the dream-pop heyday of the Cocteau Twins and Lush. This one presses further down that road, only with a more experimental streak, as cascading guitars, military rhythms, and wobbly melodies shape opulent, otherworldly songs like "The Dress" and "My Impure Hair."

Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead Fifteen years. This is when most bands start muttering to themselves about reunion tours. Formed since 1993, their first album released in 1995, (when they still had another female Japanese art student in the band to balance symmetrically against the Italian Pace twins), it took six more full lengths and more than twice those years, but last night they played to a sold out, fully engaged audience at Webster Hall. I was worried that the softer pop material from their new album, 23, would be boring live, but they managed to turn everything they played up to a head-nodable levels. That coupled with the enormous (and fully utilized) bass / subwoofers at Webster Hall ensured a high ceiling of intensity. Ah, married couples in bands. I was handed some numbers that may or may not be true, but Simone Pace and Kazu Makino have apparently been conjugally joined for seven years? And they’re in their fourties? I guess that’s possible. Blonde Redhead. A band I know absolutely nothing about. Then again, I know nothing about a lot of things, but a neat perk about this gig is being exposed to artists I’ve never heard of, thereby expanding my tastes and horizons. Yeah, I’m growing up. The verdict? 23 offers tasteful goodies to a select audience, but if you’re not of the low-key, mood-inducing, alt-rock vein, you won’t find much here.
