In London I am always passing weird place names. The other day I saw a church called the Parish Church of St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe. I had to know where on earth it had got that name.
So I went on a Black Cab Taxi tour of London. A private two hours of being driven around by one [...]
Production at Coventry has been increased to meet demand.
Black cab firm London Taxis International (LTI) have reported a big increase in sales of their new model.
Figures from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show 469 new TX4 taxis were sold in March, 37% more than the previous year.
The Coventry firm has seen record UK sales in each of the five months since the TX4 was launched.
So far this year it has sold 940 TX4 taxis, a 44% increase over the same period last year.
Matthew Cheyne, from LTI, said: "To meet this demand we have increased our production rate at our Coventry factory.
"The growth in sales is being driven by owners recommending the new TX4 to their fellow cabbies as well as positive feedback from passengers to taxi drivers, not just in London but throughout the UK."
The new TX4 model has been fitted with a cleaner Euro IV compliant diesel engine which runs on 5% Bio-Diesel fuel-mix.

Drivers of the classic Black Cab spend most of their daily lives trundling through the streets of London. They are a rare breed and the cars they drive are just as full of character and personality as the cabbies who drive them.
Taking the sage advice of a Cabbie is the perfect way to locate any destination. A Cab driver's suggestions can uncover off-beat routes and help you get the feel for a city. Remember, they are the folks who hear and see everything!
Travelling in a traditional taxi is a unique, convenient and easy method of getting from place to place throughout the convoluted maze of London.
So why are Black Cab Drivers the best travel guides to London? The Reason; Cabbies are famed for possessing a detailed understanding of the city, known simply as The Knowledge.
The Knowledge
All of the official London cab drivers are required to pass a test called The Knowledge. What the Knowledge is, can sometimes hard to define. Taking from between 2-4 years to
Black cabs fares are set to increase again
Taxi fares are set to rise again, taking the average cost of hailing a black cab above £10.50.
Journey prices will increase by 3.2 per cent on 14 April, the eighth time they have gone up since Ken Livingstone became mayor seven years ago.
This means a typical fare - averaged out across day, night and weekend rates - will jump 32p from £10.25 to £10.57.
Passengers travelling between 10pm and 6am - when the fares are most expensive - can expect to pay just under £13, up about 40p on the current £12.57 night-time average.
Cab fares are reviewed annually by Transport for London. The intention is to maintain the earnings - in line with cost of living inflation - of the capital's 24,678 cabbies once the cost of running a car is taken into account.
The minimum fare remains at £2.20, which includes a 20p environmental charge, which was introduced three years ago to encourage drivers to modernise their vehi

The PDA is making its way out of City boys' pockets and into black cabs, with the announcement that black-cab firm Xeta is giving all its taxi drivers an XDA II to help with booking jobs and locating customers' addresses.
The PDAs will act as what "an in-cab job booking terminal", so even when a cabbie isn't in his taxi, he can still receive details of the next pick-up and information about where punters' addresses are.
The XDA IIs won't just help the cabbies out, though. Xeta will be switching its taxis from the traditional Private Mobile Radio system to a mix of GPS and GPRS to help controllers find out where taxis are at any given time and locate the nearest black cab to a customer.
The network switch will also mean that cab operators will be able to communicate with their drivers outside the capital.
