A vaccine that acts as birth control for elephants is promising to ease the tension between park resources, human expansion and an ever increasing but still very vulnerable African elephant population. However, I believe family planning initiatives for Homo sapiens should be taken into consideration as appropriate throughout rich or poor areas of the world because there just aren’t enough natura

In fact, many members of the medical community may advise against using this form of contraception due to the various birth control side effects that may result from the use of hormones. FDA Warns Clot Risk Higher in Birth Control Patch Than Pill
(HealthDay News) -- A birth control skin patch used by many American women carries a risk of serious blood clots that is higher than the risk already recognized for the birth control pill, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned late Friday.Based on the results of a new study that discovered the increased danger, the agency said it has approved changes to the labeling for the Ortho Evra Contraceptive Transdermal Patch, to better warn women and their doctors of the potential risk."For women that choose to use contraceptives, it is important that they thoroughly discuss with their health-care providers the risks and benefits involved," Dr. Janet Woodcock, deputy commissioner for scientific and medical programs at the FDA, said in a statement. The warning followed reports out of Canada la

      Acne and birth control
Birth control oral contraceptives (OCs) have been available since 1960 and have been modified since then to decrease their risk of side effects. They are the special method of contraception by most young couples. Oral contraceptives stop ovulation and make conditions tricky for a fertilized egg to implant on the uterus wall. Oral contraceptives can also be made up of progestin alone or of a combination of synthetic estrogen and progestin. The combination pill has estrogen that is usually in the form of ethinyl estradiol or mestranol. The vast popular of contraceptive pills use ethinyl etradiol as the estrogen that acts to lower levels of luteinizing hormone and increase the sex hormone binding globulin. This in turn lowers testosterone, thus reducing the drive of the oil glands that are liable for acne to produce excess oil. Some experts consider that the normal variety of testosterone for women that is set by laboratories is superior than it should be. If this is true, it might mask t

Birth Control Pills Have Dangerous Side Effects
Oral contraceptives, especially the high-estrogen ones sold decades ago, might increase the chances of artery buildups that can raise the risk of heart disease, according to a new Belgian study.About 16 million American women are presently taking birth control pills, and hundreds of millions have used them at some time. They are already known to raise the risk of blood clots and high blood pressure.Ultrasound exams showed a 20 to 30 percent increased prevalence of plaque for every 10 years of oral contraceptive use, and any amount of plaque is believed to raise the risk of heart disease.I can't stress enough that ALL birth control pills and injections can have serious health risks. There is always a safer option when it comes to birth control pills. Admittedly, it may not be as convenient, but other, far safer options exist. We certainly don't know everything about estrogen or estrogen dominance, as it is called when estrogen levels remain high (throughout the menstrual cycle) without

BIRTH CONTROL PILL LINKED TO HEART DISEASE
Researchers say extended use contributes to plaque build-upMillions of women have taken the birth control pill since its introduction in 1960. Now comes a disturbing study suggesting some women who took early versions of the oral contraceptive for long periods of time could have heart health risks.Belgium researchers say their study shows that oral contraceptives may raise arterial atherosclerosis – a plaque build up in blood vessels – by 20 to 30 percent for every decade of use.The study sample included 1,300 women between the ages of 33 and 55. It found that plaque build-up was most likely in the arteries of women who had taken the pill the longest.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/11/pill_heart.html~Sandy G.

Councilman Wants to Give Pigeons Birth Control to Reduce Population
New York councilman James Oddo came up with a solution to reduce the pigeon population in the ferry terminals at Staten Island, and that is to give them birth control.  Oddo said that giving the pigeons OvoControl-P, which is a drug that makes the pigeon eggs unhatchable, would be a solution to reduce the population, thus the amount of droppings the birds leave in the terminals would be less. Oddo said that the drug could be mixed in with the bird seed,; however, this drug has not yet been approved for use on pigeons by the Department of Environmental Conservation in New York.  A product that is similar was approved for geese last month. Oddo is also the man who lost it when he was interviewed by a Norwegian comedian.  This was in the news not too long ago.  I thought it was pretty funny myself!

Abortion as a form of birth control
A very divisive and sensitive issue for many, deciding to have an abortion can be very hard. An abortion is a way to end an unnecessary or unwanted pregnancy. The common of abortions occur throughout the first 12-weeks of a pregnancy. Those that happen later in a pregnancy are most frequently for medical causes. Abortions are not destined to be used as a normal form of birth control. If someone is having sex and do not want to get pregnant, use a dependable form of contraceptives. If it is vital for one to avoid a pregnancy, remaining ascetic is the best way to do this. Types of abortions: 1. Medication -The first dose of medicine works by blocking the body's production of progesterone that is needed to help keep the uterine lining appropriate for the embryo. Lacking the progesterone, the uterine lining thins and the pregnancy is ended. The next step in a medical abortion is to take one more dose of medication that will cause uterine contractions thereby forcing the body to expel

Why Some Evangelicals are Throwing Out Birth Control
I stumbled across a good article today. It is always encouraging to find other like minded Christians. This article is entitled, "Why some Evangelicals are Throwing Out Birth Control". It is not a big indepth article however it is a good introduction. Maybe one day I will blog about our story and the scriptural mandate. Below are a few snippets from this article. Take a moment to follow the link to read the whole thing. All along there were families like ours, who somehow came to the conclusion that it might be best to buck popular wisdom – and even church culture – to put God in charge of their family size. The bottom line is this: If as Christians we are called not to be conformed to the pattern of this world (Romans 12:2), shouldn’t we question the worldly assumption that children are burdens rather than blessings? And if we did, wouldn’t it follow that our words would reflect that truth and that families would look different? Why Some Evangelicals are Throwing Out

Birth control pills for 11 year olds..
At the King Middle School in Portland, Maine, medical workers are allowed to give the girls as young as 11 birth control pills without their parents knowing about it.The school board in Portland voted 7-2 to make that happen. The rationale is that some kids will have sex and the school must try to reduce pregnancies. Also, parents must sign a waiver allowing their children to receive medical care at the school. However, that medical care is kept secret from the parents, in the birth control area. Now giving sixth grade girls the pill is dumb. It doesn't protect them from disease and tacitly says that sex at that young age is understandable. This is foolish, ridiculous, and irresponsible. But in the secular progressive world. The SP doctrine is to quote, "empower children" and downgrade parental authority because some parents are bad.Right now seven states: Connecticut, Hawaii, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and New Hampshire have no parental notification laws concerning abortion.

Birth control pills with low dose estrogen and PMS
A recent study compared two oral contraceptives with the same quantity of progestin, but differing amounts of estrogen on the effect on premenstrual mood symptoms (Greco et al, 2007). For women who suffer from PMS releted mood symptoms, the low estrogen BCP seems to be a better option."This study compared two oral contraceptives (OCs) with the same triphasic regimen of progestin (norgestimate 0.18, 0.215 and 0.25 mg) but differing doses of ethinyl estradiol (EE) - 25 and 35 microg EE - in their effects on androgens, mood and sexual interest in women starting on OCs" (Greco et al, 2007)."The lower EE pill reduced FT less and was associated with greater improvement in premenstrual mood. A causal relation between these two effects is uncertain" (Greco et al, 2007).Greco T, Graham CA, Bancroft J, Tanner A, Doll HA. Republicans vs. Birth Control or Why the GOP is Going to Lose in 2008
From The Baltimore Sun:The quiet campaign against birth controlAt National Right to Life's conference this year, Mitt Romney set out to convince anti-abortion leaders he was their candidate. At the podium, he rattled off his qualifications. To a layman's ears, it sounded pretty standard for abortion politics. He wants to overturn Roe v. Wade. He supports teaching only abstinence to teens. But for those trained to hear the subtleties, Mr. Romney was acknowledging something more. He implied an opposition to the birth control pill and a willingness to join in their efforts to scale back access to contraception. There are code phrases to listen for - and for those keeping score, Mr. Romney nailed each one. One code phrase is: "I fought to define life as beginning at conception rather than at the time of implantation." The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists defines pregnancy as starting at implantation, the first moment a pregnancy can be known. Anti-abortion advocates wa

#745: Hysterectomy Day, Celebrating The Birth Control That Works
The Mother-in-law's Hosta In A Band Of Morning Light After RainI am feeling strangely calm at the moment, considering that today is Hysterectomy Day, which will commence with a hospital admission at 10:40 a.m. and culminate in a laparoscopic hysterectomy, performed on one Schmutzie Pickles, at 1:00 p.m. Of course, I just woke up five minutes ago, and it is only 7:15 a.m., and it is nil by mouth until this evening, so there is no coffee to speed me into an anxiety attack about the nature of my reality this morning. If I could chug the usual three cups of my favoured grow-hair-on-your-chest, Schmutzie-issue java juice, my laissez-faire attitude might not be so apparent, but as things stand, I am pretty relaxed right now, if a little tight in the chestal area. I also have the Palinode to hold my hand through this nastiness, which is right fabulous. My serenity may fly south, though, once the nurse comes at me with a rectal nozzle for the much feared enema, but that is a few hours away

Making decisions about birth control, or contraception, is not easy. Of course, the are many things to think about. Learning about birth control methods you or your partner can use to prevent pregnancy and talking with your doctor are two good ways to get started. There is no best method of birth control. Each method has its own pros and cons and some methods work better than others do at preventing pregnancy. My sister has 3 children and they wanted to try birth control. Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch
Lawsuit against Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch hits close to Home I heard about a law firm seeking women to provide information about their experiences with the Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch. There is a class action lawsuit building and they are trying to identify anyone that is eligible for follow up treatments and possibly a cash settlement for damages. Some women are suffering from blood clots and there has even been one woman that died as a result of the patch. There are women all around the country that have tried this patch and now we are starting to learn that it may not have been as safe as it was promoted to be or that some doctors have prescribed its use in ways that weren’t tested. When I read about this lawsuit it made me think of my own experiences and struggles and how much the system, including pharmaceutical companies and doctors, in a little bit of desperation, pushes you to try anything.
