Living on the gulf coast, you always keep an eye out for the seagulls. Not because they are inherently dangerous (well...I'll get to that in a moment). But, seagulls are a good indicator of what's going on out in the Gulf of Mexico. If it's bad weather, say 10-15 miles out from shore, the gulls can be found flocking all over parking lots in the supermarkets, department stores, malls, etc.
Sometimes its possible to step back from a painting and return to it with fresh eyes days or weeks later. I find this really helpful and its amazing what jumps out at you, or how easy it is to fix the problems that took on epic proportions and seemed insurmountable at the time. So that is what I have been doing lately - only with fifty paintings, some of which date back several years to when we

Fort Collins - A tourist-filled raft slammed into the Class 3 rapid Sarah's Hole on the Cache la Poudre River one morning this week. Some rafters grimaced, others screamed or laughed as they punched through the waves. Their faces were captured by photographer Charlie Malone. When Malone was done shooting, he pulled the memory stick out of his Nikon camera and slipped it into a tiny Lycra backpack worn by a gray pigeon named Lucky.Malone gently released the bird riverside, and Lucky took wing.Malone and the company he works for, Rocky Mountain Adventures, were relying on the uncanny - and scientifically mysterious - ability of homing pigeons to fly for tens and even hundreds of miles and find their way home.No one knows how they do it, said pigeon expert Charles Wolcott, a professor of neurob

Birds are the freest living creatures on earth. I mean, that was before! today, they are gradually out of sight! They are not totally free!Reminiscing my childhood, I was fun of seeing birds freely and playfully playing at the Salmon sky, especially during times when the twilight was slowly conquering the serenity of the dusk. While having fun seeing them, I sometimes wished I was a bird, so I can freely travel the zenith of the sky and see from the top the beauty of the earth's landscapes. As I grew up, those birds I joyfully watched have gradually vanished. That time, nobody answered my why those birds were slowly vanishing before my young eyes.I learned it from my high school days that some of the birds have been migrating from one place to another, trying to shield from the unknown da

The last book which dealt with the birds of Argyll was published over a century ago, in 1892! The Argyll Bird Club, an organisation with less than 200 members, deserves great praise for taking on the very considerable challenge of producing a modern, up-to-date, avifauna of the county. The book had been produced an editorial team of six people who, between them, came up with the original concept, obtained the necessary funding to cover the printing costs, and then buckled down to the hard work of writing the introductory chapters and well over half the species accounts, drawing the maps, finding photographers and artists,

Perhaps its just us, but we cannot help but feel that a designer somewhere (in China) forgot to take their medication before coming up with this monstrosity of a desktop USB speaker system - but what really surprises us is that another someone somewhere actually thought that someone else (who is, quite probably, somewhere else) might actually consider parting with money to have this hideous absurdity litter their desk.

Scientists study evidence modern birds came from dinosaurs
It looks like chickens deserve more respect. Scientists are fleshing out the proof that today's broiler-fryer is descended from the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex. And, not a surprise, they confirmed a close relationship between mastodons and elephants.
Fossil studies have long suggested modern birds were descended from T. rex, based in
A column published in 2004 contained concerns raised by naturalists that birds were being killed by wind turbines. It is true that birds have been killed by the machines. Every product has a negative side, but every product has room for improvement, and better development.

This is one of those Lifehacker type of tips my wife discovered a few years ago. Problem, we have a play house I built for our kids a few years back that attracts bees, nesting birds and other pests. We would have to clean out the structure every few days to keep the pests from taking over. The solution to problem was stunningly simple. Spray the interior of the structure with OdoBan. OdoBan is a sanitizer designed to eliminate odors. It has a eucalyptus scent. Mix some up in a spray bottle, lightly spray the interior services and no more pests. It's like magic. And the kids are no longer afraid to enter the play structure for fear of bees. I suspect this would work with other cleaners like Pinesol but OdoBan is the only one we've used. You can get OdoBan at Sam's Club.

Business Times - 08 Apr 2008 BUILDING GREENAttracting the birds and the bees Singapore's Garden City concept may be extended further to encompass ecosystems that encourage biodiversity, reports MATTHEW PHAN BIODIVERSITY seldom comes to mind when one thinks of the living environment. Yet biodiversity - which refers to the number and variety of organisms in an area - merely extends Singapore's Garden City concept.Originally conceived in 1968, the Garden City vision aimed to soften the harsh concrete landscape of the city, and create a lush, aesthetic environment to make residents and foreign investors alike feel comfortable. Over time, it has evolved into a broad model for managing urban plant and animal life: 9 per cent of Singapore's area is dedicated to park and natural land, with four ga
My trip to New York is now over and I must say it was awesome. It was made complete with a trip to the New Amsterdam Theatre to see the Musical “MARY POPPINS.” Though the entire show was top notch (to say the very least), I was particularly touched when Cass Morgan sang “Feed The Birds.” I promise it will bring you to tears two times: one in the theatre and the other when you leave and see all the “birds” that literally need to be feed. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity” (1 Corinthians 13:13). Some of the newer translations use the word “love” in place of “charity.” Many of the birds that need to be feed have little of any of these. But, through our charity they can begin

This article is about a recent occurrence in my life and culture that bewilders me. For a couple of years now my partner and I have been leaving birdseed in a flower box outside of our apartment's backside windows. From time to time we have had anywhere from a few visiting birds to what I would consider as many as 10+ resident ones. Mostly doves and smaller chickadee type birds, but recently we have had the occasional pigeon.Well, last night I received a phone call from my landlord saying that he had received a complaint from the neighbor, and that our beloved birds have been leaving droppings on the neighbor's deck; I can understand (sort of) the neighbor's concern. After telling me of the neighbor's complaint, and then asking me if I in fact was feeding the birds

New Zealand eh, land of supernatural beauty and extremely friendly people. For a bit they punched above their weight in the music department as well by way of a certain Flying Nun. Not so much recently although the Ruby Sons (they used to be called something else) could have something to say about all that if first impressions of their newbie ‘Sea Lion’ is anything to go by. Funny then that much of what appears from the creative orifices of the Ruby Sons can be traced back to a different continent altogether. Yep, ‘Sea Lion’ could yet become an indie ‘Graceland’ for the noughties. There are plenty of shades on this one though, like the coolly detached grace of ‘There Are Birds’. Imagine Beach House were they to have at least one cup of coffee and you’ll get the gist. Flig

The most astonishingly dramatic and colourful birds of the air are with out doubt the birds of paradise, from Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. This still of a lesser bird of paradise Paradisaea minor is from an NHNZ Images movie clip. It's the males that dazzle with song, colour and acrobatics, much as those picture wing flies of Hawaii impress their females, which I wrote about last week. These plumed birds of paradise assemble at display grounds, called leks, to entice a female with their spectacular advertising. Her eye is most likely to be caught by the most flamboyant of these extravaganzas. They are the very opposite of discrete, but attract no predators. Very few ever existed in the treetops of New Guinea. For millions of years the 28 kinds of birds of paradise evolved in comp

It may sound overly generalizing, but it's the truth. The people you choose to call your friends are the people that will ultimately shape and mold your future. If your friends are interested in cars, pop music, and dancing, most likely you will be into those things as well. If your group of friends are into networking, planning ahead, and thinking positively, you will most likely pick up those good habits as well. It can just as easily work the other way. People outside your niche of friends will judge you by the people you surround yourself with and you do the exact same thing when you observe other p

I managed to find my way into the glasshouse again, but I couldn't find my way out. I panicked and cannoned off the glass panes for half an hour, losing quite a bit of plumage in the process, until the gardener let me out. Still, I had the last laugh, he'll be cleaning poop and feathers off his tomatoes for weeks. For the umpteenth time in my twenty-seven-year career as a freelancer, I'm plum out of work. And 2008 began with such promise. Checks from a 2007 gig still coming in and the dangling carrot of those proverbial new assignments. Nothing to fret about. Hell, I could use a little time off.But a little time off has turned into too much time on my hands and way too many bills.Last year, I decided to chuck freelancing for a full-time job. I'd had it with just this kind of financial insecurity and creative ennui. I landed a job as a media publicist for a boutique PR firm. I'd done a fair amount of this kind of work over the years and figured a steady paycheck and the company of other creative souls would do me just fine. I quit after ten days. Few movie stars wear the updo as well as Tippi Hedren and a few other celebrities from the early 60s. Those were the days when people dressed up to go to the laundry. A trip to the grocery store was deserving of fresh lipstick and updo hairstyles. The French Twist hairstyle that she had when she starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds movie should be studied carefully by hairstylists of today who need French twist instructions. All artists should practice and perfect this style because it is a classic and there will always be a special occasion that calls for it. Wherever there is a red carpet, there will be French Twists and updos. Celebrity hairstyles may be tweaked and updated, but the basics are the same. I'm not fond of the "wings" that stylists of the 50s and 60s put on each s
This is the big one around here - and reputedly the inspiration for Woody Woodpecker: not just in its looks: the calls we hear when they make their way, sometimes as many as four at a time, through the woods towards our chief attraction - suet - are pretty close to that irritating call of the cartoon version.I say this is "the big one" but that status is among the woodpeckers. One of my most impressive backyard sites was a Sharp-Shinned Hawk chasing a Pileated Woodpecker through the fir trees: like a scene from Star Wars. For an interesting perspective on the part this woodpecker plays in the forest ecology, read Woodpeckers, Fir Snags and Hummingbirds by Dave Neads. I chose the Pileated Woodpecker as No.7 to coincide with his publishing of this post. For more on Cariboo birds, see my Bird

I love Pixar. Each and every video from those guys is a masterpiece. I really am a fan of their creations and i cannot hide it.So here it is. One of the best short comic videos i've ever seen.I really enjoyed it. I promise you will too.
Western Meadowlark's SilhouetteWell, I had meant to do this post a bit earlier, but with my unexpected trip to Florida - it's happening now instead. The Great Backyard Bird Count is currently underway - it began on the 15th and goes through the 18th. So if you haven't had a chance to get counting, there's still time! This is your chance to help the scientists and to give a representation of the birds in your area. Bird counts can be gathered by anyone - kids, adults, novices, and experts. It can be enjoyed by an individual or a group. It also makes for an excellent family activity and a possible tradition. Bird watching is a great way to experience nature and to get familiar with the avian residents who share our spaces. Kids can certainly benefit from this knowledge, which can help them

when i was growing up, the creed of folks who would segregate those who had the audacity to reject their place was, birds of a feather flock together.i wouldn't think much about it except i overheard someone say it just the other day.it is a tough observation of nature to argue otherwise.but if you watch birds, you notice that there are a lot of different kinds, more like an infinity different kinds, which gets me wondering that some birds must be flocking somewhere with birds of a different feather.and any self-respecting bird watcher worth his or her salt would tell you, thank god they do, or it would be a pretty sad state of affairs for their hobby.so it might be best for folks who want to legitimize their prejudice and bigotry to steer clear of natural observations, since this all appe
Have I mentioned that we're in Arizona??Not able to stand this year's horrible version of the Chicago Winter, we've joined the snow birds down south for a week. I love exploring parts of the world I've never seen before, especially if those parts include awe-striking natural landscapes which I'm happy to report Arizona does. Its gorgeous here. There have been a few dissapointments we're working on hurdeling. Like, its rained ever since we got here. We come to the dessert, and the top news story is how its flooded. And its 10-20 degrees colder than the normal, even for this time of year. And the swimming pool and hot tub are broken. But all I need for those vacation-loving feelings to come pouring down like rain is to check the weather in Chicago today. Oh yeah. Its great to be here. :) Sin

Before he went to work in the computer mines this morning, Geekdaddy plowed the driveway and I shoveled a path to the cars and scraped the snow and ice off the one he was taking to work. There was no sense in cleaning off the other car. It's not 4WD, so it'd only end up in a snowbank covered with more snow, if the geek drove it out of the driveway.Later on, Son used the roof rake to rake the snow off the dining room roof so that it won't leak if the temperature ever gets above freezing. Then Daughter went out to shovel off the deck so that the cats could get out onto it so they can drool at the birds that are feeding out of their reach in the soft, powdery snow. One of our cats, braver or more foolish than the other two, started out into the snow when we opened the door this morning, sunk
Children today mature much more quickly than when I was a child. I think about this a lot since I have two daughters who are bound to start asking questions someday. My own question is this though: how much do we disclose to them?If one of my daughters were to approach me during her teen years, and ask if I had had sex before I was married, what would I say?"Yes, sweetie, your mommy was a slut and slept around before meeting and marrying your daddy!"Or......"No, sweetie. Sex is dirty and you should not even think about having it until you are 35."I mean really, what do we tell them? You can't lie to your children. But you also don't want them to be able to say, "Well you did it! Why can't I?!"Honestly, I have never been able to discuss sex with my own mother. Asking her if she had h

Being eliminated from the playoffs sucks, but there can be some good to come out of a bad season. Remember 2005 when they Eagles went 6-10? I hate to bring up that awful year, because most people just remember that bum Mike McMahon, and the end of T.O. as an Eagle. A lot of good came [...]
The CopyCat Dolls - Too Much Short Skirt to Be OriginalWhen I younger I was superbly hard working. Infact, I was known as a swot. I believe I worked harder than a lot of people because I went to a comprehensive school. It is true that I excelled in music, the arts and sciences. Being an all arounder p*** a few girls off even more. The boys were cool about it though. Then the boys at my school were all good blokes. Regrettably, I refused to date the most intelligent tall blonde guy who competed with me - because I wanted to beat him at maths first. That never happened but I came in at a cool second and missed out on a date with him. Alas !Now, the problem I have always had is about sitting next to people who weren't that nice. Infact, these girls were often time wasters who hung around the bike sheds - well, being a bike I suppose. The problem with those who don't work is that when the s*** hits the fan, they have no option but to copy the person sitting next to them. That is what use
I've said before how I'm very fond of listening to things while I work. By listening, I also mean watching minimized videos which I seldom peek at during curious spots. I don't exactly know why this is so, but simulating the busy environment works for me ... and just so I'm not fed with junk, I usually play documentaries which I can subconsciously digest.

There are ten simple reasons why you should consider having bird as your pet. Here they are:Birds are intelligent animals. They are relatively easy to care for.Birds are fairly simple to train. They require minimal grooming.Birds are extremely social creatures.Birds are fairly inexpensive to feed. They can be kept in a small space.Birds are not considered "pets" at most rental properties.Pet birds are attractive to look at.They are long-lived companions.I promise I'll discuss these points in the details later. But for now, what do you think? Birds do make cool pets, don't they?
