BANGKOK - Thailand’s Public Health ministry warned that 14 of its 76 provinces are at risk of bird flu this year, as an official said a cold snap boosted chances of the deadly virus spreading.

IT ISN’T just flu that we have birds to thank for over the millennia. It seems they also gave us one kind of common cold - and it made the jump relatively recently.
In 2001 Ron Fouchier and colleagues at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, discovered human metapneumovirus, one of many viruses that cause common colds. Although the resulting illness is usually mild, and most
The bird flu viruses are mostly subtypes of Influenza Virus A. There are several H5 and H7 subtypes of the 'influenza A' virus that cause bird flu among the birds. The wild fowls are considered to be the reservoir of the bird flu virus since ages. The migratory birds carry the pathogens from place to place and in turn infect the local population of the birds causing wide spread deaths.

Why the health authorities are too scary about this virus H5N1? It reminds some of the health researchers and scientists about the Black Death (Bubonic Plague) that broke out in China in 1300 and quickly spread to Europe. The death toll soon was in millions. The scientists fear that this virus H5N1 has similar potentialities. However, the beginning of the devastation created by this virus is humbl

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's worst outbreak of bird flu has spread to the capital with agriculture ministry officials saying on Tuesday four dead birds raised at a Seoul district government office had tested positive.South Korea has confirmed 24 cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in poultry in about a month. It has killed more than 5 million chickens and ducks but that has not stopped the virus from spreading at its fastest rate since the country reported its first case in 2003.The four birds were among 57 chickens, ducks and turkeys raised in pens at the district office in the eastern part of Seoul. The ministry said it would take about a day to confirm if the dead birds had contracted the H5N1 strain. The city had culled all the birds at the site and was limiting access to a nearby zoo an
INDONESIA opened a major bird flu simulation on Friday that will test its preparedness for a potentially catastrophic pandemic. About 1,000 government, health and law enforcement officials were at the three-day event on the resort island of Bali to consider how to contain a possible widespread outbreak of the often-lethal disease. It would begin with the isolation of a village where a field hospital would be set up to treat people with flu-like symptoms. At the closing on Sunday, officials will try to prevent 'infected' travelers from leaving the international airport and spreading the virus to other countries. 'This is the only exercise in the world (of its kind) that is ever taking place,' said Mr Subhash Salunke, the World Health Organisation's top official in Indonesia. 'This will
Indonesia does not want money for its samples of a deadly bird flu virus, a health official said Wednesday after the U.S. criticized his country for refusing to share the samples with the international community.Instead, Indonesia wants governments and pharmaceutical companies to come up with a mechanism that will ensure future pandemic vaccines are accessible to developing nations, said Widjaja Lukito, an adviser to Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari. That could include creating a multilateral trust that would enable price tiering or bulk purchasing of lifesaving vaccines, Lukito said. The adviser was responding to comments made by Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, who accused Indonesia of withholding virus samples from the World Health Organization since early 2007 because
South Korea on Wednesday issued a nationwide bird flu alert, deployed troops and put firefighters on standby to try to contain the spread of the disease, officials said. The agriculture ministry said in a statement the "orange" vigilance level was extended to the whole country after previously covering only the badly hit southwest. The ministry said it had confirmed 20 outbreaks involving the H5 virus, of which at least six were the deadly H5N1 subtype, since the first case was reported in Gimje, 260 kilometres (162 miles) south of Seoul, in early April. It is investigating 14 more suspected cases, including one on a farm in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometres south of Seoul. ~ read on... ~
During a visit to Jakarta this week, Leavitt told reporters he opposed any linkage between the sharing and new arrangements to prevent commercial exploitation of the samples."We have the same concerns about a global pandemic. If (flu) is present everywhere then there is danger everywhere, and we must work together," he said, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.In February, Indonesia resumed sending the samples on what some officials have characterized as a "case by case" basis. "We are still not receiving virus samples on a regular enough basis to ensure proper functions of the … Global Influenza Surveillance Network," said Hartl, referring to the WHO's pandemic early warning system. He said there had been a series of intergovernmental meetings within the organization about the
Well, what are the real chances of it affecting you or your pet birds? The answer is practically none. There are many facts involved in this answer: 1. It is chiefly a waterfowl and poultry disease.2. There is no cases in the USA in poultry or otherwise3. Strict quarantine laws greatly hinder the possibility of an outbreak occurring (30 day quarantine)4. There is not a case of human to human transfer yet .5. The H5N1 strain is the only strain to affect humans.6. Influenza viruses do not persist in environments outside the hosts for long period of time (ideal condition about a week) Now, I'm not going to tell you that it will never happen. In medicine and viruses there is no absolute. But, there are so many factors against it that the possibility is a thousand times less than being

The trade of live chickens will be banned in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta beginning in 2010 to fight bird flu in the world's hardest-hit nation, a livestock official said Monday. Poultry will have to be killed at government-licensed slaughterhouses outside Jakarta before being transported to market, said Edy Setiarto, adding that authorities need two years to prepare regulations and business owners for the change. Currently, many customers prefer to buy live chickens, which are then slaughtered to ensure the meat is fresh. Setiarto said 70 per cent of Indonesia's bird flu cases occur in Jakarta and surrounding districts. Last year, city residents were told they could no longer keep backyard chickens, but the order appears to have been ignored. "The government will improve efforts
Despite major efforts to control the outbreak of avian influenza in Indonesia - the country worst hit by the virus - the situation there remains "grave," the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned today. Bird flu has become "deeply entrenched" in Indonesia with 31 out of 33 provinces being infected, according to FAO. The virus is endemic in Java, Sumatra, Bali and southern Sulawesi with sporadic outbreaks reported from other areas.Just last month, five people living in the west of Java, Indonesia's most populous island, died after contracting the H5N1 virus, responsible for outbreaks of bird flu around the world in recent years. "The human mortality rate from bird flu in Indonesia is the highest in the world and there will be more human cases if we do not focus more

Avian influenza (AI) or Bird Flu is a viral disease that primarily effects fowl such as chickens, turkeys, guinea fowls, ducks, and other avian species. Fowl plague has been described as early as 1878 as a disease of chickens in Italy. In 1955 it was determined that it was one of the influenza viruses. There are three types of influenza, A, B and C. Only type A infects animals and only type A can cause a panepidemic. To date, all outbreaks of the highly pathogenic form have been from the H5N1 subtype. The flu is transmitted from bird to bird by direct contact with the discharge from infected birds, contaminated feed, water, cages, equipment, vehicles and clothing. Eggs from infected hens can break and contaminate incubators. Humans become infected after direct or indirect contact with infec

There is much to be discovered about the lethal H5N1 strain, this is clear to the international scientific community. In January 06′, there was an outbreak in Turkey in which all but two of the 21 confirmed human cases, it said, have involved children and teens aged 4 to 18. The general thinking is that children are more likely to touch or play with diseased birds. I am not a doctor or scientist but I do know when it comes to flu season in general the first warnings tend to be directed at the very old and the very young because of the susceptibility of their immune system.
One of the more disturbing discoveries is that since the virus not only affects the lungs, but passes throughout the body into the gastrointestinal tract, the brain, liver and blood cells it has been revealed it can pass from mother to fetus. This fact was confirmed in Beijing this past September when a 24 year old pregnant woman died from the bird flu and it was discovered that her four month old fetus was al

Indonesia will not share bird flu virus samples unless richer countries agree to give developing nations control over their use and access to cheap vaccines, a spokeswoman from the nation's health ministry said on Monday. Health officials from around the world failed to reach an agreement on a new virus sharing system at talks hosted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva last week.Intellectual propertyIndonesia wants a material transfer agreement for each virus sample sent to foreign labs, specifying that the sample will only be used for diagnostic purposes and not for commercial gain. Under this proposal, any commercial use of the virus would require prior consent of the country providing it. By retaining the i
Today we begin a series of reports about the disease bird flu. The series will examine how quickly the disease has spread. It will also tell what is being done to stop the spread and how people can protect themselves and their families from bird flu.The disease bird flu has killed people in at least ten countries since two thousand three. The United Nations World Health Organization confirmed one hundred sixty-five human deaths by the end of January.Earlier this month, health officials in Britain reported that more than two thousand turkeys had died of bird flu. The officials immediately ordered people to keep at least three kilometers away from the turkey farm. Workers destroyed more than one hundred thousand healthy birds as a safety measure. There is no evidence that any people became sick with the disease. The new head of the World Health Organization says it will be years until farm birds are safe from bird flu. W.H.O. Director-General Margaret Chan says that, until then, the world
Researchers in Singapore have created a handheld device that can detect the H5N1 bird flu virus from throat swab samples in under 30 minutes, raising hopes it will lead to rapid detection and containment of the virus. Conventional laboratory tests take around 4 hours, and require machines to first isolate and amplify the virus before it is tested. Writing in the latest issue of Nature Medicine, the scientists said the new device would allow decentralized testing of the H5N1 virus, especially in countries that lack basic public health resources. H5N1, a disease found mostly in birds, is endemic in many parts of Asia and experts have warned for years that it could spark a pandemic, killing millions of people, if it learns to jump from person to person. "The World Health Organisation containment plan aims to stop an epidemic locally in order to prevent a global disaster," the scientists said. "In the event of a flu epidemic, its rapid containment would depend on the promp
As more and more cases of bird flu are reported, the world faces an immediate threat of a deadly pandemic. Pandemics (Global Disease Outbreaks) are known to be like flash floods. They start abruptly, spread fast and cause a lot of damage all over the world.A few facts that everyone should know:What is Avian Influenza? As the name suggests, avian influenza refers to the infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These viruses are commonly found in intestines of wild birds and these birds can carry the viruses without getting sick. However the viruses can be pathogenic to domesticated birds like chickens, ducks and turkeys. Domesticated birds become infected through exposure to other birds or through surfaces contaminated by secretions and faeces of the infected birds. These viruses are classified as Low Pathogenicity and High Pathogenicity. Most strains of Avian Influenza come under Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (LPAI) Group and produce mild symptoms in the infected bi

An Indonesian woman became the second person to die of bird flu on the resort island of Bali, bringing the death toll in the nation hardest hit by the disease to 84, the Health Ministry said Wednesday. The 28-year-old woman - who worked for a chicken trader - died Tuesday after being hospitalized for four days, said spokesman Joko Suyono. "Tests in two local laboratories came back positive" for the H5N1 strain of the disease, he said. However, he could not say whether samples will be sent to a WHO-collaborating laboratory for confirmation. Another woman died of bird flu on Bali one week ago, causing fears that it would hurt tourism on the island, which has been struggling to recover since terrorist attacks in 2002 and 2005 killed more than 220 people.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com

Copyright 2005 Andrew CavanaghBird flu protection could be as simple as bowing instead of shaking hands.Japan never suffered an outbreak of SARS despite being surrounded by countries where outbreaks occurred. The most likely reason is that viruses like SARS and the bird flu are most commonly passed through hand to hand contact and in Japan it's more common to bow than shake hands.Hand hygiene is also promoted heavily in kindergarten and schools across Japan. This combination of excellent hygiene and a lack of formal hand to hand contact could be huge factors in Japan's avoiding the SARS outbreak and may hold one key secret to slowing a bird flu pandemic. What most people don't realize is that over 90% of respiratory viruses like the bird flu, the common cold and influenza get into your body through contact between your fingernails and the mucous membranes of your eyes and nose. They literally hitchhike into your body and you're giving them an easy ride.If the bird flu mutates into a hu
Indonesia will not resume full cooperation with the World Health Organisation on sharing of bird flu virus samples until a fair mechanism is in place, a health official said on Tuesday, but denied sending unusable specimens. David Heymann, WHO assistant director general for communicable diseases, said on Monday that Indonesia was now the only country that had not shared samples of the H5N1 virus that drug makers can use to develop vaccines. He said three specimens Jakarta sent in May to a WHO collaborating laboratory in Japan contained fragments, but no live virus. Triono Soendoro, head of the Indonesian health ministry's research and development centre, dismissed Heymann's remarks. "He doesn't understand about viruses. Just tell him to ask the virologists in Japan and let them explain to him," Soendoro said by telephone. Jakarta argues these companies use the specimens to develop vaccines poor countries like Indonesia cannot afford.Related: WHO: In
Indonesia has yet to resume sharing samples from human bird flu victims with the World Health Organization, jeopardizing not only the Asian nation but the entire planet, the U.N. health agency said Monday. David Heymann, assistant director-general for communicable diseases at WHO, said the agency had received three specimens from Jakarta in May, but none contained any live virus. "What's important is that all countries share viruses that they isolate from humans," Heymann said. "By not sharing the viruses, Indonesia is ... putting in danger its own populations, because if those viruses are not freely shared with industry, vaccines will not contain the elements of the Indonesia infections. The second thing that Indonesia is doing is therefore putting the whole world at risk."Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com
Vietnam plans to start its first human trial of a locally-made H5N1 bird flu vaccine as early as next month, using 20 to 30 volunteers, said health officials in the communist country. The drug trial, to be carried out with US government technical assistance, will be the latest of several global efforts to develop a vaccine for mass production, with research also going on in the United States, Europe and Asia. The news comes as a new wave of bird flu sweeping Vietnam has killed a 20-year-old man, infected four other people and triggered more than 100 poultry outbreaks nationwide since last month."Preparations for the clinical test of a human vaccine have been basically completed," said Nguyen Tran Hien, director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in Hanoi."Twenty to 30 volunteers will be chosen to test an H5N1 vaccine produced in Vietnam."Hien said he expected testing to start as early as next month, pending health ministry approval, with the trial expected to wr

The European Union and the Japanese government have given grants amounting to US$10 million and US$5 million respectively for handling the bird flu virus in Indonesia. The grants were announced during a meeting between the Indonesian government and the donor countries at the “ HPAI in Indonesia: Latest Situation and Future Steps to Control H5N1 Virus” as the theme, at the Gran Melia Hotel, Jakarta, today (13/6).
Asia-Pacific health ministers said on Friday that a "climate of fear" that accompanies the outbreak of infectious diseases such as bird flu could have a devastating impact on Asia's economies."The climate of fear that disease outbreaks such as avian influenza bring can rapidly sap the confidence and enterprise that underpins the economic dynamism of our region," Australian Health Minister Tony Abbott told the conference.Indonesia said on Wednesday the H5N1 virus might have undergone a mutation that allows it to jump more easily from poultry to humans, but stressed the findings were preliminary.Indonesia is struggling to contain the disease because millions of backyard chickens live in close proximity to humans across the archipelago. Contact with sick fowl is the most common way humans become infected with bird flu."The possibility of a pandemic arising from avian influenza presents a significant threat to human health security," said the health ministers.
A couple of days ago the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) suggested we may have turned a corner in the bird flu fight.Whenever I see something like that it sends a chill down my spine, because invariably within a few days things happen to put the lie to this eternally springing hope, and this was no exception. We've got bird flu appearing in Vietnam (including the first confirmed human case since November 2005), China, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Ghana, etc.Thirty countries so far this year (out of a total of 59 that have ever reported outbreaks). Yet another human case in Indonesia (hardly news anymore).
The World Health Assembly (WHA) is holding a meeting in Geneva where deliberations on Indonesia`s draft resolution on the mechanism of the dispatch and sharing of bird flu virus samples have proceeded very toughly."It is a very tough meeting. But with that we have opened the eyes of the world that developing countries have felt an unfair mechanism with regard to the sharing and dispatch of bird flu virus samples," Communicable Disease Director General I Nyoman Kandu said Thursday. But members of the World Health Organization (WHO) who are attending the WHA sessions actually have the desire to produce a fairer mechanism or system for the sake of the international communities` health, regardless of whether they are poor or rich, the director general said.
Just in case anyone forgot:
And the Cubs owe them big time after letting the Cards come in and take two out of three last weekend (and lose me money in the process). As Carl mentioned earlier today, St. Louis aka "Dirtiest City in America" is about as bad at Beer Stadium as the Cubs are at Gum Field.
Tonight Jason Marquis gets another chance to stick it to his old team, as he did about a week ago when he blanked the Cards for seven shutout innings. If he can repeat the feat, maybe some of the IALOHO faithful will turn their hatred to the team's really bad players (Ronny Cedeno, Cesar Izturis) instead of one of the team's few pitchers with a winning record and who has done little wrong so far this season. It's OK, Jason, I got your back. No need to thank me.
Why do they keep yelling my name? I don't understand. What more must I do? St. Louis will send Anthony Reyes to the mound, and the Cubs' bats should be able to get to him, as they did last Saturday, touching him for four ear
A teenage girl in Indonesia is infected with the deadly bird flu virus, becoming the 93rd confirmed case in the country worst hit by the disease, a health official said Thursday. The 15-year-old lives in the country's sprawling capital, Jakarta, and is in intensive care in one of the city's hospitals, a spokesperson from Indonesia's bird flu information centre said.Related: Indonesia's Latest Bird-Flu Fatality Linked With Pet Hawk
A 20-year-old Indonesian woman died of bird flu on Monday, bringing the country's death toll from the disease to 66 out of 86 confirmed cases, a doctor said. Siti Nuraini has been hospitalized for two weeks in a hospital in East Java province before she died Monday, Dr. Tegus Sylvaranto was quoted as saying by a leading website detik.com. The number of bird flu cases in Indonesia has increased recently after months of absence of new cases. Indonesian health authorities have imposed a firm policy separating fowls from human beings and intensified surveillance on the virus. In addition, the authorities have banned raising fowls in residential areas.
Indonesia's health minister says the country wants a legal guarantee that bird flu samples it sends to the World Health Organization will not be used for commercial gain. Siti Fadilah Supari says the guarantee is necessary because Indonesia's samples could be used by drug firms to make vaccines that would be too expensive for developing nations. She says Indonesia wants a "Material Transfer Agreement" such as will be discussed at an international bird flu meeting later this month. Jakarta announced last month that it would only share samples of the bird flu virus with parties who agree not to use them for profit.
Indonesia's refusal to share bird flu virus samples with foreign laboratories risks undermining the WHO's global influenza protection system, a WHO official and Australia's leading laboratory said on Thursday.Indonesia argues that developing countries are disadvantaged by the prevailing system, which allows drugmakers to use these samples to make vaccines that citizens of third world countries often cannot afford to buy.
The U.S. Embassy in Indonesia is advising Americans to avoid contact with stray cats in the country, citing confirmed reports of the animals carrying the deadly bird flu virus. In a posting on its Web site Wednesday, the embassy addressed the risk from the H5N1 virus in Indonesia, where that strain of bird flu is endemic in chickens and has killed more humans than in other nation. "There have been confirmed reports that wild and stray cats have been shown to carry H5N1," the embassy said. "While there have been no documented cases of feline-to-human transmission of H5N1, it is important to avoid contact with wild and stray cats."
Indonesia, which has had more human cases of avian flu than any other country, has stopped sending samples of the virus to the World Health Organization, apparently because it is negotiating a contract to sell the samples to an American vaccine company, a W.H.O. official said yesterday. The strains of the H5N1 virus circulating in Indonesia are considered crucial to developing up-to-date vaccines and following mutations in the virus. The official, Dr. David L. Heymann, said the agency was "clearly concerned†about the development and was in talks with Indonesia.

Bird Flu hits Norfolk Turkey farmer, Bernard Matthews. Government say that there's no reason to panic. TV reports that if it spreads, then the Government would discourage travel between major Cites. Looks like British Rail may be revived in the event of a national crisis.

Honest, I just looked up the symptoms, and I am not a hypercondriackt (you know what I mean) at all, well I wasn't until a few days ago. I ache all over and feel as if my bones have been replaced with lead. Luckily the French are generous when it comes to drugs.
