Ever dreamt of seeing Europe on the back of a Harley, or having the wind in your hair, ground at your feet, while straddling your baby along the scenic routes of Europe’s gorgeous roads? Whether you’re an adventurer, a wonderer or a weekend rider and your baby is a Harley, a Vespa or something in between, this year’s Moto Rally in Faro, Algarve was the destination of 40,000 bikers just like you. A mammoth presence doubling this small towns population from 50,000 to 90,000 overnight. The annual gathering in Faro’s, Valley of Souls (Vale de Almas) lasted four days, serving up parties, concerts and a lot of beer. I couldn’t help but notice that headline in Today’s Dispatch article.  I live down the street from Big Dog Motorcycles on Broad Street and I always pass by and see motorcycle enthusiasts cruising in and out.  I also stop by their cafe from time to time for a good, quick bite.  Anyway, even though most of the riders I see aren’t wearing helmets, I was under the impression that Motorcycle riders in Ohio did have to wear helmets but there is no helmet law in Ohio for adults.  Coincidentally, Riders were not wearing helmets in at least 70 percent of the Ohio motorcycle deaths in 2006, a State Highway Patrol Spokesman said.  I mention all of this because I’ve seen more and more scooter riders around midtown Columbus lately and the same laws apply to them.  I think Columbus is a very Scooterable city and I’d love to see more and more scooters and less and less cars. The notion of women being perceived as backseat ornaments on motorcycles is long past. Women are suiting up all over America and the world to experience the exhilaration that until recently mostly men had the pleasure of experiencing. They’re controlling the throttle while their husbands, significant others and men in general are embracing their new found independence. When it comes to forming motorcycle groups, clubs and organizations, women are setting their own standards. BIKER MEMORIAL

I have had the pleasure of logging in many hours on the open road on my motorcycle and meeting a wide variety of bikers from coast to coast. There seems to be a trend amidst all bikers thoughts, and it’s not what you think. It is all too common that non-riders have a misunderstanding of the mind set of a biker. For some unknown reason bikers have earned this ‘rebel without a cause’ image. And don’t get me wrong. I like that people smile at me when i walk into a bar wearing my full leather motorcycle apparel, for fear that if they don’t, I will chew them up and chase ‘em with a Budweiser. But has anyone ever actually sat down and thought about, really thought about what goes through a bikers mind before, during and after a ride? Or anytime at all for that matter? (more…)

Get an eyeful of this looker. My friend James’ bike knocks out an impressive 33HP from a measly 125cc two stroke engine. I asked him what it’s like to be a deaf motorbiker in London. Does it matter that you can’t hear the traffic? Not at all, he said…. you have to keep an eye out for traffic anyway, and assume everyone else on the road is a nutter. Central London Fun His bike is so noisy that he mostly hears the engine’s roar which reverberates around his helmet - this is why a lot of hearing bikers wear ear-plugs! James likes to turn his hearing aids right down, so he can still hear a little, but cut out the squealing he gets from the compression inside the helmet. I remember doing this too, when biking in County Derry - eventually I just took them out as they were uncomfortable with the tight fit of the helmet, but it’s safer to wear them when on the road.
