The next big government spending spree
No one should be fooled that this government-led effort will finally wean us from our dependence on foreign oil, rid the planet of its environmental woes, and supercharge the economy in the process. Instead, it’s simply a recipe for more bureaucracy and higher inflation. Have we all forgotten how the “Guns and Butter” of the 1960’s led to the stagflation of the 1970’s? Our politicians a

      Big Government Conservatism, Part II
Tom Coburn has an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal today that makes the case against so-called "compassionate conservatism" and, believe it or not, against spending increases for Iraq and Afghanistan. The piece argues, correctly, that Republicans are in denial that what ails the Republican Party is that Republicans over the last 8 years have ceased to act like Republicans but are instead trying to

      Big Government Conservatism
See-dubya, writing at Michelle Malkin's site, demonstrates how modern conservatism is ultimately more about finding things for the government to do than it is about limiting the size of government. In the post, he says that it is a "fair question" of what our counter-terrorism strategy should be "when" we defeat al-Qaeda. One would think that once the biggest threat (and entire raison d'etre for m

Time For Big Government To Back Off: Leave The FDLS Alone!
[1] [2] Without 1 piece of evidence and against all reason and moral justification, authorities in Texas are hard at work destroying the lives of the members of the Fundamental Church Of Latter Day Saints (FDLS).  There was a supposed phone call that claimed a girl of 16 was being forced to have sex with an older man. The caller has not been found but the call came from Colorado although the group lives on a ranch in Texas. In other words - Texas acted without reason, cause, or justification as further court appeals will hopefully demonstrate.   The FDLS practices polygamy which the Mormons gave up a while ago.  Their leader, Warren Jeffs, was arrested a few months back for fraud and tax evasion.  [3]  All of the more than 460 children and youths removed from a po

New Zealand Bans Political Satire: Thank You Big Government
In case anyone needed to keep up-to-date on Liberal Fascism around the world, New Zealand's politicians just banned the use of photos taken from their debating chambers that could later be used as satire. It is interesting watching the logical extent of "Progressivism" around the world. Too bad most of the American public is too enamored watching American Idol. Apparently, New Zealand's... Gavin Newsom Will Tax Soda Pop in San Francisco: Thank You Big Government!
While I am a proponent of federalism, and keeping government local, someone better keep a close eye on San Francisco. Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco has decided to tax large grocery stores for stocking Coke, Pepsi and other drinks sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. "City officials say there's a direct link between sweet drinks and obesity, which puts a strain on the public health... Click the Headline Link to Visit Copious Dissent and Read the Full Story.

      Big Government Bush
      - Scott Miller President George Bush is not a conservative. Let’s establish that right up front. He is a Republican, but he is in no way a conservative. A conservative would not have piled a massive new prescription drug entitlement program on top of an already fatally crippled Social Security and Medicare system. A conservative would not have ever argued for amnesty for 20+ million illegal aliens. A conservative would have never tried to sell our nation’s ports to the Islamic nation of United Arab Emirates. A conservative would have never tried to nominate Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. I could go on, but you get the point. AND… a conservative would never stick government’s enormous nose into the free markets to bail out gamblers who are loosing on their bets! Yes, I’m talking about the reported agreement brokered by the Bush administration to artificially “freeze” select sub-prime mortgages in yet another nanny state move. This from t

FDA to Ban Salt From Our Foods: Thank You Big Government!
To add to the list of things that liberals believe the government needs to do: Tack on protecting us from ourselves. Yes, the American Medical Association, a bunch of do-gooder groups, and the FDA, have teamed together to make our food taste like Styrofoam. Apparently, the American people are consuming too much salt and we need to be stopped. This time, it appears that they are serious: “The... Oversimplificaton in Libertarian versus Big Government Choices
Michael Kinsley predicts that libertarians are rising but the more notable aspect of his essay is in showing how dividing politicians along libertarian versus big government grounds is not as easy as it may seem. I would take his arguments further to add that a choice versus libertarianism and big government is an over-simplification as is the belief that libertarian candidates are always those who would bring about more freedom. Kinsley begins: To oversimplify: Democrats are for Big Government; Republicans are against it. To oversimplify somewhat less, Democrats aren’t always for Big Government, and Republicans aren’t always against it. Democrats treasure civil liberties, whereas Republicans are more tolerant of government censorship to protect children from pornography, or of wiretapping to catch a criminal, or of torture in the war against terrorism. War in general and Iraq in particular–certainly Big Government exercises–are projects Republicans tend to be m

A 70-Year-Old Great-Grandmother was Arrested for Allegedly Not Watering Her Lawn: Thank You Big Government
Something is clearly in the water supply. Not only do liberals want to ban fast food, but now they are arresting 70-year-old great-grandmothers for having brown lawns. Yes, Betty Perry was cited by Officer James Flygare of the police's Neighborhood Preservation Unit for failing to water her lawn.“Perry refused to give her name to the officer and, when Flygare tried to stop her from going back inside her house, she reportedly tripped and injured her nose.” Are we living in the Soviet Union? What kind of nonsense is this? Why are tax dollars going toward a “Neighborhood Preservation Unit?” Again, these bureaucratic nightmares are getting out of control. There was a really simple solution to this situation. If Betty Perry’s neighbors wanted her brown lawn green, they should have knocked on her door and offered to water her lawn for a small fee or for free. If she refused, that’s too bad; it is her property. If elitist liberals want to argue that it lowers the property

Liberals Push to Ban Fast Food in South Los Angeles, California: Thank You Big Government
We predicted this happening better than Nostradamus ever could. As we have said hundreds of times over the last few months, big government liberals would attempt to ban fast food. Well, it appears that will happen in California. While many of you “healthy eaters” may feel indifferent about this decision, just wait when the government bans something you actually enjoy. Then it will be too late.“Amid worries of an obesity epidemic and its related illnesses, including high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, Los Angeles officials, among others around the country, are proposing to limit new fast-food restaurants -- a tactic that could be called health zoning.” The government is the only thing being overfed in this case. There is no better evidence that the government is stealing your money than when its officials have time to zone for fatty foods to protect you from yourself.Just read this insane quote from a brilliant liberal communist:"The people don't want them, b

Sweden Bans Woman from Smoking in Her Garden: Thank You Big Government
Every chance liberals and “Big Government” get, they will take away your freedom. If you are skeptical, look no further than Sweden. In Vaxjo, a woman was just banned from smoking in her own backyard. For those of you who think America will never get this insane, all it takes is small steps over time, and we are certainly taking steps in the wrong direction. Just a decade ago, nobody could have predicted that trans fat and smoking would be banned in restaurants, but that is exactly what happened. While I am not a smoker, most people support smoking bans because they find smoking an annoyance. However, once people give government power, government continues to grow. I honestly predict that government will ban unhealthy foods in restaurants or give tax credits for exercising in the next twenty years.Sweden, a Country just oozing with government regulations, is a macrocosm of how far these lunatics will go. This recent smoking ban “came after the woman’s neighbor, a lawyer w

Republicans Merge Big Government With Republican Party
One of the major problems of Republican one-party rule has been the politicalization of parts of the government which have not been overtly political in the past. This trend actually started under Reagan when Federal judge appointments were done on a more ideological basis than had been traditional. The firings of the federal prosecutors showed a greater political influence in areas where the Justice Department has historically shown more independence. The K Street Project extended politics into the federal bureaucracy. On Sunday, The Washington Post showed how Karl Rove had further extended efforts to politicize the government: Thirteen months before President Bush was reelected, chief strategist Karl Rove summoned political appointees from around the government to the Old Executive Office Building. The subject of the Oct. 1, 2003, meeting was “asset deployment,” and the message was clear: The staging of official announcements, high-visibility trips and declarations of fed

At the recent CNN/YouTube debate, Hillary Clinton was asked to define what a liberal is and declare whether she was one. “You know,” the New York senator said, “it is a word that originally meant that you were for freedom … that you were willing to stand against big power and on behalf of the individual. Unfortunately, in the last 30, 40 years, it has been turned up on its head, and it’s been made to seem as though it is a word that describes big government, totally contrary to what its meaning was in the 19th and early 20th century.” “I prefer the word ‘progressive,’ ” Clinton continued, “which has a real American meaning, going back to the progressive era at the beginning of the 20th century. I consider myself a modern progre

CNN YouTube Democratic Debate: Big Government at its Worst
The CNN YouTube Democratic Debate was the typical liberal panderfest. It also oozed with total support for big government. While I could easily write a book about the absurdity that took place, this editorial may seem more like a stream of consciousness. For the first time, we really saw who the Democrats are. Anderson Cooper, in my opinion, did an excellent job forcing the liberal Democrats to expose their true intentions. He made sure that all the questions were answered and I commend him for that. Let us take some time to examine some of what was said. When asked whether any of the politicians would work for minimum wage, all the politicians said they would but Senator Dodd. So, if that is the case, maybe we do not need a minimum wage after all. This was pandering at its worst.Earlier in the “debate,” John Edwards, with Stalinist zeal, advocated taking the power away from corporations through the use of government force. The scary thing is that the audience applauded. Tha

United Nations Cannot Feed the World Because of Environmentalists and Big Government Policies
The United Nations recently claimed that rising food prices has hindered it from fighting famine in Africa and other regions around the world. It simply can no longer afford it as a result of environmentalists pushing biofuel and ethanol. One of the United Nations’ bureaucratic heads was quoted saying, “In a world where our contributions are holding fairly steady, this [cost of grain] means we are able to reach far less people.” This was so predictable it is astounding. But, I guess liberals will keep trying to push their big government policies and killing people as usual. On paper you clearly did not need Nostradamus to tell you this plan would lead to disaster. First, the environmentalists encourage people in growing populations to use their food supply as fuel, thereby reducing the supply. People still need to eat, so the price rises. When poor people cannot afford the food they starve. Then add to this brilliant plan a massive bureaucratic nightmare known as the United

      Big Government
Rep. Brian Higgins cast his vote, and helped pass, 2 spending bills this week that keep us under the thumb of BIG GOVERNMENT. The first bill was a $27.6 billion bill that would fund the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Interior, the Forest Service and the Indian Health Service for the 2008 fiscal year. The second bill was a $21.4 billion bill that would fund the Department of Treasury, the Executive office, the Judiciary, the District of Columbia and independent agencies for the 2008 fiscal year. Kudos to Rep. Randy Kuhl for voting against both spending bills. Bloomberg: The Biggest Little Man in Big Government
Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday he is no longer going to be a Republican. Is anyone really surprised? The man has practically reinvented how far Big Government policies can go to create a nanny state. I wouldn’t have been surprised if I heard he created an ordinance requiring three hours of fresh air each day for all New Yorkers. The truth is that there is nothing conservative about Bloomberg, both social and economic. Generally, Conservative governors will hold restraint with their power. However, with Bloomberg, there was not one aspect of New Yorkers’ lives he did not believe he had the obligation to intrude. Maybe he was just being a “compassionate conservative?” In reality, everyone knows he only ran as a Republican because the way mayoral elections work in New York. What is worse is that Bloomberg, with his multibillion dollars may now run for President. God help us all. I do not even want to think about what he will do to our Constitutional Republ

Big Government and the Lure of War
For my classical conservative fellows who are mystified over the lack of support for Ron Paul among the professional politicos of the Right, I recommend an excellent article from a few years back titled What is American Corporatism? by Robert Locke. It’s a must read.It isn’t that the Right has tried to shrink government and failed. This is the portrait repeatedly offered when phony conservatives wax wistful about the "Contract with America" as if it was a valiant struggle that just came up short against the prevailing Clintonian political climate. This is rubbish. The truth is that there are ample incentives for the New Right to promote big government, and promote it they have. Some of these incentives are outlined in the above-referenced article. Mr. Locke gives a thumbnail sketch of the “third-way” that has guided federal economic policy since the New Deal (actually seeded decades before, as Gabriel Kolko documents in The Triumph of Conservatism). What it boils down to is the

Downsize DC: Big government harms you, hurts your family, and injures your neighbors
Congress is once again pretending to address its own failings by silencing voices it doesn’t want to hear. First, it regulated campaign finance. This was supposed to prevent corruption. It didn’t. It merely made incumbents more secure by making it harder for challengers to raise the funds needed to compete with them. Now they’re proposing so-called lobbying reform.Congressional leaders tell us they “just can’t say no” to the lobbyists who ask them for hand-outs. So Congress pretends to regulate the lobbyists. Don’t believe it. The legislation that Congress calls “lobbying reform” will really target small grassroots groups like DownsizeDC.org — groups that citizens use to communicate with Congress. Meanwhile, the so-called “Astroturf” groups, like those created by Jack Abramoff, will be exempt, as will unions, membership groups like AARP, large corporate controlled coalitions, and trade associations .It’s business

      Big Government = Big Lies
Big Government constantly lies about the effects and accomplishments of its extravagent social programs.  The true costs and consequences are very rarely discussed openly.  Here’s a few examples: Sen. Dan Quayle (R-Ind.), who parlayed his role as chief author of the 1982 Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) into the vice presidency, claimed that the act "has a job placement rate … for the young people around 70 percent" However, this statistic was actually based not on jobs but on "positive outcomes" — which included learning how to make change from a dollar and demonstrating "effective non-verbal communication with others" The Job Corps, the flagship of Lyndon Johnson's war on poverty, padded its success claims by counting Corps trainees as employed simply by confirming that they had had one job interview. Government education programs are notorious for using deceptive statistics to lull parents about the quality of schooling their children rece
