      BIG BEN GETS HIS MAN
LIMAS SWEEDWR - TEXASHeight: 6-4 Weight: 212 40-Time: 4.52College Coach: Mack BrownWell, Ben Roethlisberger finally got his wish: a tall wide receiver. And they don't come much bigger than second-round pick Limas Sweed, who goes 6'4", 212 pounds.Sweed was projected by many as a first-round pick, and much like the Steelers' first choice (Rashard Mendenhall), he fell directly into Kevin Colbert's lap at pick #53.Sweed has some speed issues, but by all accounts has a fantastic work ethic. Early signs indicate that Steeler Nation is quite enthused with the pick. Some notes on Sweed:--2007 Stats: 19 catches, 306 yards, 3 TD in 6 games--Had his senior season cut short by a lingering wrist injury that ultimately required surgery--Caught the game-winning TD in the huge early-season 2005 game agai

The BNP have moved Big Ben
One of my colleagues on Gateshead Council got his hands on a copy today of a glossy mailing posted out by the BNP to people who, it can only be summised, were regarded by the BNP as supporters. Complete with begging letter was a magazine, issue 1 of "Hope and Glory".When I looked at it, something did not appear to be quite right on the front page which was filled by a hugh picture of the Houses of Parliament. And then it struck me, Big Ben had been moved and airbrushed into a different place. For some reason it is now where the St Stephen's entrance is.Quite why the BNP should wish to redesign one of our great British buildings in this way is not clear.Thumbing through the pages reveals no surprises. The usual BNP rants about foreigners, asylum seekers and immigrants. And an awful lot abou

      Big Ben Bookshop, Prague
Where? Prague, The Czech RepublicVisited: March, 2008A cozy bookstore by the name of Big Ben is a common meeting point for expats in Prague. Unlike its name suggests, it's neither big, nor Ben. No, seriously, it is a rather small place with a pleasant, almost family-like atmosphere. For people spoiled by second hand bookstores in other parts of Central Europe (yes, we mean Budapest), the prices may seem a bit high. However, for those accustomed to regular priced bookstores with new English stock, Big Ben may not appear expensive at all.The selection of books offered in Big Ben is actually very good, taking the limited available space into consideration. The books are arranged in several categories, we really appreciated the fiction and the children's section. Besides the usual paperbacks o

ESPN Hashmarks Weighs in on Big Ben
I never realized how polarizing Ben Roethlisberger could be, but I'm starting to get an idea. Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio came out in defense of Big Ben this morning, and as a result got whacked by his callers for the remainder of the show. Now, Matt Mosley of the .com side weighs in with his opinion of my opinion, and adds his list of the top QBs in the NFL, which unfortunately does not have Ben at the 3-spot that I think he deserves. His list, predictably, has already led to debate in their comment section. You'd think we'd be able to somehow figure this thing out statistically, but since no one wants to give credit to QB rating, I guess it will remain a debate. By the way, for those interested, Ben is currently 2nd in that category (111.9) behind only Tom Brady (131.8). To give you an idea of how unbelievable of a season Brady is having, consider that the single-season record is 121.1 (Peyton Manning, 2004) and the career record is Steve Young at 96.8. FYI, the rookie record woul

Omar Bakri wants Islamic flag to fly from Big Ben
YnetNews (via Hot Air Headlines) reports: Islamic fundamentalist cleric Omar Bakri has warned that "the day will come that the flag of Islam will fly over the Big Ben and the British Parliament." Bakri made the comments during an interview with the London-based Arabic-language daily al-Sharq al-Awsat.I get the feeling he likes the ominous big bongs that the clock tower makes every hour. He

      Big Ben? Big Eats.
I'm not really sure why I think this is news worthy....maybe it's been a long week....but with my hometown Pittsburgh pride, I bring you Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers "golden boy", on a pumpkin. When given the option to either stomp or eat the pumpkin, the elephant decided, like many of the college girls in Pittsburgh who hop into Ben's car.....to down him like there's no tomorrow.Did I ever mention elephants are my favorite animal? No? I used to collect them as a child. See? It all comes full circle. The more you know. Do do do dooooooo.

      Big Ben falls silent
Big Ben has fallen as workers climbed down Parliament’s iconic clock tower, beginning a month of maintenance work on the clock and its world-famous bell.   Time briefly stood still as the clock’s hands were frozen shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday. The hands were then wound to 12 o’clock as a team of specialist “industrial rope-access technicians” descended to clean the clock’s four latticework faces, part of maintenance ahead of Big Ben’s 150th anniversary in 2009.

ESPN.com to Big Ben: You Suck
If I'm ever a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, I hope I never have two near-death experiences in the same offseason. Because I've seen what it's done to the perception of Ben Roethlisberger, and it's simply unreal. On June 18, I wrote waaaay too many words about Peter King's slap in the face to the Steelers QB in his "2007 Quarterback Rankings". He ranked Roethlisberger as the 17th-best QB in the NFL in 2007, behind such luminaries as Jon Kitna and Jay Cutler. Worst of all, he said his rankings took winning into consideration. Only three QBs in the league have won more playoff games than the 25-year-old Roethlisberger: Favre, Manning, and Brady. In the regular season, Roethlisberger was 14-0 as a rookie starter in 2004, and 9-3 in 2005. And two of those three losses were to Manning and Brady (the third was to Baltimore). It was a ridiculous argument. The latest Roethlisberger diss comes from ESPN.com, in an article entitled, "Cantonized". It's a list of 50 players the WWL believes w

Big Ben Takes a Jab at Former Coach Cowher
A new year and a new look for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who kicked off their first mini-camp over the weekend. One fact that came out to the media that may have been a bit of a shock was from QB Ben Roethlisberger, who told the media that he and former coach Bill Cowher are not exactly on each other’s Christmas card list. “Our relationship wasn’t great because he was here before I got here and I was just a young kid,” Roethlisberger said Friday to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. There was tension between the two for the three seasons in which Cowher coached the QB. Cowher often talked about keeping Big Ben in line with the plays called, while Ben was the type of QB who liked to make things happen, running around in and out of the pocket to try and make a big play. That style though, despite what Cowher may say or think, is exactly what took the Steelers to the Super Bowl title two seasons ago. Big Ben made huge plays in all four playoff games, and it was his ability

Have you heard the whispers that Ben Roethlisberger got brain cancer from X-rays on his head?SI.com offers a Gallery of Kenny Rogers pine-tar pictures throughout the season.ESPN.com wants to give us one more arbitrary poll to argue about, so here are their NFL QB Rankings. Pens fans, you absolutely must keep up with the Pensblog. Here's their recap from the Devils win, and might I add that we were also annoyed with Versus' Mike Emerick calling Michel Ouellet "Maxime Ouellet". Harris Fired, Big Ben Buys a Dog, Another Bengal Arrest, Trot Nixon a Pirate?, Nate Robinson Dunk, Jessica Runs Off Stage
COLLEGE FOOTBALL:Walt Harris never had to worry about Stanford being shut out of a BCS bowl. A 1-11 record will do that. Now he doesn't have to worry about the last three years on his contract, either. NFL:Big Ben just bought a new police dog for his hometown, after their dog was killed. Keep that in mind the next time you want to dump a beer on him after he throws an interception. The late "Flip". On the topic of Ben, here's a disturbing tribute video along the lines of the Tom Brady video last week. (thanks to reader Joshua) Reggie McNeal doesn't buy dogs for the police department. No, he chooses to fight with them. Thus explaining the seventh Cincinnati Bengal arrest of the season. Broderick Bunkley of the Eagles missed the team flight and was suspended for the game last week against the Colts. Why? He was picking up chicken for his teammates.MLB:The Pirates need a young power lefty bat. So they're chasing 32-year-old Trot Nixon, of course. I was asked to be on a panel of Pirat

Big Ben Does It Again...With Help From Carson Daly
I have to admit, I was pretty stoked on Sunday morning. The sight of Ben Roethlisberger in a 1930s gangster-style black pinstripe suit while doing guest commentary on ESPN was simply breathtaking. The fact that he neglected to shave his chin raised the bar even higher. And when the Worldwide Leader mentioned Ben's weekly phone calls to The Donald, which I originally brought to the masses on Friday (with much help from Deadspin), well, that just made my day. On the heels of the Trump story, I didn't want this to turn into the internet version of the All Roethlisberger Network. So I held onto this until now. But imagine my surprise when I find this photo in my email last week, courtesy of loyal reader John: Big Ben, drink in hand, making a face to the camera, sitting next to Carson Daly. I can't speak for you, but in all of my Steeler-related net surfing, I've never seen this picture. And I think it's a classic. There was no explanation of where or when the photo was taken, but it

Does our mercurial quarterback have his sights set on a second career as an NBA star?Sadly, no. Large Benjamin simply took up Steve Nash on an invite to shoot around with the NBA's most exciting team, the Phoenix Suns. The theme of this week's link submissions should be "The Steelers...Off the Field". First we see Bill and Kaye on the beach, then we're treated to Ben shooting hoops...tomorrow I'm expecting video of Casey Hampton at a wing eating contest.
