I'm tired of the media praising bike riders for going green. I hate how the whole "ditch the car" thing is dedicated to giving credit to those that ride their bikes to and from work. What about the walkers? What about me? Then again.I digress. I walk to work, but I don't walk because it's the green thing to do. I walk out of force. When I first got to Seattle, I got a job with a snowboard retailer an

Bicycles have been around for a very long time. In fact, bicycles have been around for so long that it is a very common tradition, especially in the United States of America, that one of the first thing that a young child is taught along with his or hers abcs and 123s is how [...]
Advocates of climate change who have seen the use of motored or engine run vehicles as one of the major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions, a simple solution has emerged: get people to ride a bicycle, they not only help conserve energy but they also help themselves to be fit and healthy.
There is a tragic story last week out of Virginia. Apparently a 15 year old was riding his bicycle on a busy road when a car approached him from the rear. According to published reports, the car mosed into the oncoming lane to pass the cyclist. The young boy, however, then turned left in front of the car. According to local police , the young cyclist was wearing headphones as the time of the accident. Unfortunately, he died from injuries sustained in the accident. I have read about accidents like this in Washington State too. And I have seen a lot of cyclists ion city streets, on Lake Washington Blvd, and in the parks wearing headphones. The obvious but sad lesson is that wearing headphones while bicycling (and, for that matter, while running near traffic) is a recipe for disast
China may be famous for bicycles, Hong Kong is now rather famous for buses and their ongoing traffic from side of the city to the other. This picture was taken in Causeway Bay and I quite like the image of the bicycle in the middle of motorized engines. Two means of transportation are missing here [...]

However, bicycle riding wasn’t always accessible to [...]
As I simply cannot stomach another baby rant, and I don't do resolutions, you lot can have another entry from my history of idiocy. Here in Holland, the bike is King. The country is flatter than [insert name of any ex-girlfriend or undesirable here].The infrastructure is tremendous for cyclists, cycle paths & lanes, traffic lights, special sign posting etc have all been heavily invested in, making it an environmentalist's wet dream. So, upon my arrival in this fair land more than 6 and a half years ago, I decided I was going to fully integrate and cycle everywhere. This I did with great enthusiasm. To work, to shops, to visit friends, to appointments, to restaurants, and to bars. To lots of bars. What amazed me almost as much as the widespread use of bikes was the fact that I had never falle
A new biker gang is roaming the streets of Richmond Hill, Queens. This crew of mostly teenagers can be seen riding along 103rd Avenue just west of the Van Wyck Expressway. The bikes roar, but the booming sound has nothing to do with engines — because there are no engines. They are ordinary bicycles, [...]
By: Jason Petrina One of the first activities that majority of kids learn is how to bike. They should all learn as early as possible the rules and safety tips of riding a bike as many will be using the bike as their first source of independent transportation. But before that everyone must find a bike that fits them perfectly, it doesn’t matter what age you are when you’re looking for a bike it should fit your needs. When purchasing a bike first make sure the frame height is good with you height. Make sure by allowing at least one to two inches of clearance from the top bar to your crotch when you straddle the bike. The thing would be the frame’s length. First sit on the bike and reach for the handle bars make sure it allows you to be comfortable and have control of the bike. The third step would be to adjust the seat and handlebar to your preference. Most bikers prefer a small degree of bend on their knees when their legs are at the lowest point of the pedal rotation. After that
By: Maks Kossak Exercise bicycles provide resistance which can be adjusted because some exercisers may want to pedal slowly but at higher resistance while others would prefer pedaling faster but at lower resistance. This latter type is often called spinning and is a form of aerobics exercise that is performed at health clubs and gyms. It requires that the exercise bicycles be set up to accommodate the type of exercise that the exerciser wishes to do. Adding variety to the workout can also be achieved through interval training which means alternating periods of high and low intensity and it helps the exerciser to comfortably achieve good workouts. The diversity of applications that an exercise bicycle provides the rider makes it ideal for patients suffering from back problems and the seats and handlebars can be adjusted to facilitate different levels of comfort as well as keeping the rider' s posture in the right position and that includes not tilting too far back. Most riders can adjus

自転車 Jitensha is the official word for them, but charinko, shortened to chari, is just as likely to be heard when the topic is bicycles. Cycling is huge in Japan, and is far the preferred means of transport when making your way around the neighborhood as opposed to cars or public transport.Spidery, long-legged racing bikes and little folding bikes are the trendiest to be seen on the streets at the moment, but they are still way outnumbered by the mama-chari, i.e. ‘mom bike’. It’s hard to believe, but according to law, or perhaps by-law, bicycles are supposed to be ridden on the road in Japan, but you’d be lucky to see one in fifty on the road. The vast majority are ridden on footpaths. To be sure, many footpaths come with a special bicycle lane, but it is blithely ignored by cyclists and pedestrians alike.Bicycles on the footpath add to what, as a pedestrian, you have to keep an eye out for. Most cyclists approaching will either ring their bell, apply squeaky brakes, or ma

Beijing is a huge city, and traffic laws are often ignored--but cycling is still a good option, especially in the warmer months. There are moreover designated bike lanes along the sides of most roads. These lanes are fairly large and safe; still, caution should be exercised. You are not in Amsterdam.Rental bikes can be found in many locations. The bikes pictured at right were parked in the Back Lakes area, which is a great place to ride. The parks, lakes, and hutong (narrow alleys) make for a perfect--and safe--placed to spend an afternoon. In this area there are many good restaurants and bars and shops, for those more interested in the post-ride.When you rent, if possible you should try to get a helmet and lock. If they are not available, local shops are a good and inexpensive option. Most cycle shops in Beijing do not have English-speaking staff. However, on a ride north of the Forbidden City, I needed to have my brakes adjusted and had no trouble communicating with a helpful young gu
