I don't know if the birds eat these ones, but they have been eating the ones we have in the back yard. The squirrels and chipmunks are also joining in.I have one little red squirrel that breaks off a branch with the berries, climbs to a nook in a tree branch, picks all the leaves off, then eats each berry and discards the branch. Quite a pile of leaves and twigs are building up under that tree. Of course, when I go out with the camera, he beats feet and is no where to be found. I think he is laughing at me because he watches me watching him through the window.

Photos of cowberry / lingonberry plants - as flowers and berries
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on August 27th, 2007. Click picture for larger view. In this photo you can see ripe cowberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), also known as lingonberries (and foxberry, mountain cranberry, lowbush cranberry, and partridgeberry). I have been collecting several kilograms of these lovely berries the last few days. I use cowberries mainly as jam or compote accompanying meat dishes, especially game meats. They have a tart taste so they are perfect with meat. In old times, when people didn’t have a freezer, cowberry was used as a natural preservative because of their high content of benzoic acid. It was mixed with other berries, like cloudberry, to make the berries edible throughout the winter. Cowberry was (and is) an important source for vitamin C, A and some B vitamins. Our family is pretty much self sufficient with cowberries, but I believe you can buy cowberries at IKEA in rest of the world? Here is a close up picture of cowberry flowers. Taken

      Healthy Twig And Berries
As required by his new school, we had to take Zane into his Pediatrician today for a regular exam. It was his first such exam since his one year exam back in early April. Unfortunately, we had to wait about an hour and a half in the waiting room before getting an examination room. It's Saturday, so the office was extremely busy. Luckily there was a boy of about 10 that was waiting as well. He and Zane played ball in the middle of the room. Zane loves playing with older kids.Once in the examination room, Zane was stripped of all his clothes, save for his diaper, and the examination began with a nurse. He thought it was kind of fun to be almost naked. He kept wanting to get down and run around. Although he kept saying "shoes" because he wanted his shoes back on.His weight was a healthy 24 lbs. That's two pounds more than his last sick appointment about a month ago. I wasn't surprised as he's been eating like a pig lately. His height was 32 inches. I don't remember what it was during

      Goji Berries and Kashi
In the past few months I've blogged about goji berries a few times since I bought a bag at Costco and looked them up on the internet to find out just how healthy they are. They are an amazing little fruit, but I have to admit dear readers, that you can only eat so many dried goji berries when you are just not a dried fruit kind of girl. I don't eat raisins, I don't care for dried cherries or

A bounty of berries for a very special birthday
Yes, this is a strawberry mirror cake. No, I’m not a member of the Daring Bakers clique - but read on… Whilst I bake cakes fairly often (there is a new cake on the kitchen bench on average once a fortnight), I generally go for plain cakes that don’t require any fancing piping or icing - not as a personal choice, but because my family tend to prefer simple cakes for everyday consumption, and an iced cake is just a tad more difficult to pack for lunch than an cake that has not been gussied up. What does this mean for me? Well, generally speaking, I have to restrain myself from making fancier cakes, bookmarking the recipes and gazing at them wistfully, the longing in my glances so keen that they could cut glass. The exception to this is when I bake for a birthday, and I tend to go…well, a bit mad with birthday cakes, as there’s nothing better than to see the look of delighted surprise on the birthday person’s face when you present them with a gorgeou

Photos of cloudberry plants - different stages of flowering and berries
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 27th, 2007. Click picture for larger view. I have taken some pictures of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering and the final product as a tasteful berry (as you can see in the photo above). The cloudberry plant (Rubus chamaemorus), or bakeapple as it is called some places, is slow growing sub-arctic specie that is a very important berry here in northern Norway. Cloudberries are mainly used as jam, with whipped cream, in cakes and some even make alcoholic drinks out of the berries. When the berries are ripe there is a lot of competition among people to get a good harvest. There have even been reports of fighting Thus the price on cloudberries can be as high as 18-20$/kg. The following pictures are of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 14th, 2007. Click picture for larger view. Notice the moth sitting on a leaf in this last picture. Taken with Olympus E500

      Pick berries in Sequim
Dear Sequim visitors,One of our first posts when we started our Sequim town blog reporting casually about our retired life in Sequim, one of the best retirement town in Washington state, was about picking berries in Sequim. We were impressed by the variety of berry farms in Sequim which offered u-pick berries. Ever since the beginning of berry season this June - remember we noticed that strawberries were ripe very early this year due to the nice weather - we are regularly picking fresh berries for our morning cereal and just for eating them by themselves. We woke up to a nice sunny Saturday morning this weekend (some early fog lifted soon). At around 10am I took off for picking strawberries at Graysmarsh Berry and Lavender Farm for u-pick berries. After I had picked enough strawberries, I decided to check on the raspberries and believe it or not, there were already quite a number of ripe and sweet fruits (they need to fall into your hand, otherwise they are not ripe).Well, we were not d

To stand out from the crowd [Red and Green Asparagus Vine Berries]
Green and Red Asparagus vine berriesGreen Asparagus vine berries with a single red berryThis is a nice fresh close-up I took on one of these cold winter mornings we've been having lately. The berries of the "Asparagus Vine" in the picture are mostly green, except for one red berry near the center of the photo. This is another example of how just those little everyday things that we don't notice much can feature in some great photos. This photo has a slightly different composition to most of the photos I have posted recently. It's major "eye-grabber" is the red berry in the center, which stands out from the rest of the berries scattered over the picture. The vine's stems all lead downwards from the top of the picture, and help to "cement" the berries together. The sharper section near the red berry also helps to draw attention to the subject of the photo. This photo taken with the Kodak C330 camera.Related Photos:Odd One Out - Camphor-laurel leaves in contrastBalloon Vine flower with

Remember When I First Told You About Goji Berries?
If you are looking at the graphic I'm including with this post you are probably saying to yourself, "what is goji juice?" Growing Goji berries
If you've been following the health industry with any interest you would have noticed a product called Himalayan Goji juice being touted as the next big thing in health food supplements. We've seen it all before with mangosteens, acai and even hoodia gordonii and I'm sure goji berries won't be the last. Each of these so-called 'incredible health supplements' have surpassed each other making mangosteen and acai juice so yesterday! But, for the time being goji berries are the flavour of the month which entitles manufacturers of goji juice to charge a truckload for their products - apparently. So, I'm not about to argue whether the hype is real or not but for those who are convinced it's the health supplement of the century, let me show you how to grow goji berries. History of goji berries Before you race out and buy some goji seed it may pay to read up on it's preferred climate and history. Firstly, as most overzealous marketers would want you to believe that goji berries

      Shortcake and Red Berries
This is my husband´s favorite shortcake. In winter frozen berries work fine. They do not even need to be defrosted. Cake pans come in a wide range of sizes, from a round cake pan, to a loaf pan, to a rectangular pan, to a ..... I have tried them all for this recipe of shortcake. Once, or perhaps twice, I divided batter and poured it into two loaf pans. The choice is yours! Therefore I do not mention the baking time. The batter will bake much more quickly in a large, wide oven baking pan. Check yourself for doneness by inserting a wooden skewer in to the centre of the cake. When no batter sticks on the skewer, the cake is ready.INGREDIENTS:* 75 g butter* 1 ½ dl (150 ml) milk* 3 eggs* 3 dl (300 ml) sugar* 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar* 4 ½ dl (450 ml) wheat flour* 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder* 1-3 dl (100-300 ml) raspberries or red current berriesMETHOD:Preheat oven to 175 degrees C (about 350 F).Butter an ovenproof cake pan (any size will do),Cover sides with breadcrumbs.Melt butter, pour i

Will it blend? Berries, bananas, yogurt, and...
Not so fast. You're going to have to read on to find out...If you're heading over to teach English in Seoul, you're gonna miss a few things from back home. Some people miss the chocolate selection. Some miss the junk food selection (although Seoul has more than enough convenience stores to fill the void). Some miss clean air that involves living on the westcoast of Canada (there's nothing wrong with yellow dust--actually, who am I kidding the stuff hurts your throat, eyes and mouth). What do I miss? I miss the fruit and vegetable selection at a decent price. The price of fruits and vegetables here can be outrageous ($6US for one pear, $2US for one kiwi) compared to the prices we're used to back home. The selection can also be an issue as well. However, we've always tried to make the best of it. Golden kiwis from Costco. Apples, frozen durian, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and pineapple from Homever. Grapes, strawberries, and oranges from the farmer's truck on the side of the road

Pie with Creamy Toffee Sauce and Sourish Berries
The sweet-sour flavor of this pie makes it a favorite. I have a couple of redcurrant bushes in my garden - cultivated mainly for jams and jelly. However, I find freezing a great way to save some packages of fresh berries and have them for a pie in winter. You can substitute the redcurrants with some other sourish fruits available. Lingonberries work fine.INGREDIENTS FOR THE SHORTCRUST:about 10 pieces* 2,75 dl wheat flour* 150 g butter* 1 dl brown sugar* 1 dl coconut flakesINGREDIENTS FOR THE FILLING/TOPPING:* 1,5 dl whipping cream* 1 dl granulated sugar* ½ dl light golden syrup* 1 teaspoon ginger powder* 5 dl fresh or frozen red currantsMETHOD:1. Preheat oven to 225 degrees C.2. Prepare the dough mixing the flour, butter, brown sugar and coconut flakes.3. Put it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes.4. Line a pie dish (Ø 30 cm) with the dough.5. Then bake for 10-15 minutes.6. Combine cream, sugar and golden syrup in a saucepan.7. Simmer until it thickens, 15-20 minutes.8. Add butter and g

      wheat berries
I am not aware of having ever previously eaten a wheat berry before this past week, despite a 10 year past of vegetarian eating and an interest in healthy grains. The April issue of EatingWell® Magazine had a very nice piece about wheat berries with a number of recipes. Since the foodie and I are experimental types when it comes to food, we decided to try them out. We headed over to the Henry’s in University City where we were happy to discover that they are quite affordable, at around 50 cents a pound that day. Henry’s is one of our favorite haunts for produce and bulk ingredients, so we were disturbed to hear of its parent company’s recent buy out by Whole Foods. I truly hope they will leave a good thing alone! Wheat berries are very hearty, with a chewy texture, and mild nutty flavor. They turn out to be delicious in a salad with a citrus vinaigrette as well as a wonderful addition to chili. The foodie whipped up the following wonderful, filling chili based on the
