Two fences. A court order. More than 200 citations. Rain. Cold. Heckling from football fans. Excruciating boredom. And still, almost a year after they clambered up the oaks and redwoods next to Memorial Stadium, the Berkeley tree-sitters remain undaunted in their perches.
Protesters have been in the foliage since December, hoping to save the grove from a proposed $125 million sports training facility. UC wants to remove about 100 trees - about two-thirds of the grove - to build the center, and plans to replace each lost tree with two saplings and one mature tree. All but a few of the trees were planted by the university after the stadium was built in 1923.
“If they want us to come down, they should put the gym somewhere else,” said Kingman Lim, a member of the ground crew of about a dozen supporters who provide the tree-sitters with food and water. “Until then, we’ll do what it takes to protect these trees.”
He said the tree-sitters are not fazed by court
The Berkeley City Council has given the green light on a new green initiative: a solar power loan program that would be the first of its kind in the nation.
Last night the city council unanimously approved the bill that would loan current homeowners the up-front cost of installing solar panels on their home. The average cost to install these amazing energy conservers is $20,000-30,000 depending on how large the home is.
During the next 8 months the city staffers will completely work out all the financial, legal, and tax details in order to submit the proposal for final approval by the council next summer.
It states in the approval that, “The initiative calls for the city to facilitate a 20-year loan with a small interest - perhaps as low as 2 percent - to individual homeowners. Homeowners would pay back the loan every month along with property tax bills.” Since going solar usually means a zero dollar electric bill, it could end up costing homeowners nothing.

The William and Flora Hewlett foundation has given UC Berkeley the largest single gift in the University’s history. The offer was given with the intent to keep UC Berkeley competitive with other private universities around the country.
Up until they received this gift, the public university struggled to compete with private universities that were receiving 20% per annum increases on their endowments. So says Cameron Anderson, an associate professor at the Haas School of Business. Anderson and his co-author, Adam Galinsky of Northwestern University, in an article published in the issue of the European Journal of Social Psychology demonstrate how a sense of power leads individuals to risk-seeking behavior.
The article, “Power, Optimism, and Risk-Taking,” is based on five separate studies the researchers conducted. Although the studies involved students, Anderson and Galinsky’s findings apply more broadly to a range of powerful individuals, from heads of state to CEOs to prominent community leaders.
