VDOT is proposing widening Belmont Ridge Road (Route 659) between the Dulles Greenway (Route 267) and Route 7 (3.4 miles). The proposed improvements will include widening of the existing road from 2 to 4 lanes on a 6 lane right of way, shared-use paths and the construction of a bridge over the W&OD Trail in Loudoun County. Rags to Riches surprised the field as she managed to pull offf a sterling race upsetting the Freakness winner Curlin in the 138th Belmont Stakes. For the first time in over a century a filly has won the mile-and-a-half Belmont Stakes. After stumbling out of the gate, she regained composure, getting good position to make her dash in the home stretch. Facing a challenge by Preakness winner Curlin in the stretch, she won by a nose. It’s a historic day for thoroughbred racing. The last filly to win the Belmont Stakes was Tanya in 1905.

Not long ago when Curlin defeated Street Sense in a squeaker. Here we come again for the third leg of the Tripple Crown. The 139th Belmont Stakes has a field of only seven entered for the 1 1/2 miles. It may be a small group of three-year-olds, and Street Sense will not be there. The only sophomore missing from the race that should be there is Street Sense. Taking his spot is leading filly Rags to Riches. Preakness Stakes winner Curlin is the 6-5 favorite with Hard Spun, third in the Preakness and second in the Kentucky Derby, 5-2 in the program. A win by Curlin would put him atop the three-year-old division, while a victory by Hard Spun makes it a three-way race for the Eclipse Award.

Sebastian Junger, best known as the author of the huge bestseller, The Perfect Storm, has one of the spookiest family photos that one can imagine. In that 1963 photo, baby Sebastian and his mother are posing in celebration with the construction workers who have just completed a project at the Junger home. What makes that photo so unusual is the fact that one of those workers is none other than Albert DeSalvo, the man who was soon to confess to the Boston police to being the infamous Boston Strangler.That photo and the family's exposure to Albert DeSalvo became part of the Junger family folklore and it is the jumping off point for Junger's A Death in Belmont.
