Alaska to Portland seems like a long way but I haven’t looked at a map so I could be completely wrong. Nelson Kempf and Keeley Boyle recently made the trip and haven’t budged since. The duo call themselves the Old Believers and could become the most ridiculously cute new act of 2008. They remind me of Elephant Parade, for obvious reasons, but lean more heavily (if that is the right word) towards alt country. Most of their dispatches are acoustically set which means that nothing can detract from the sweet home cooked vocals. I made the mistake last night of stumbling into a web forum discussion on cosmetic surgery. It wasn’t a mistake because there’s anything necessarily wrong with the consept of plastic surgery. Rather, I just had no idea that it was nearly as controversial a subject as it apparently is, or that people held their beliefs on the subject nearly as dearly as their political and religious beliefs. Even the implication that cosmetic surgery may not always be the wisest choice for every person got me piled on like the new kids in school during the lunch break football game. I honestly didn’t intend to go stirring up that viper’s den, but it sure is fun watching them pose and strike. For the record, I’m not opposed to cosmetic surgery at all. As an anarchist I believe 100% that a person’s body is their own. Should they not be satisfied with some aspect of it for whatever reason, they should be free to use whatever means available to them to change it.

I have to admit that this one came out of nowhere for me. While Elk City has been making music since 2001 they were new to me and I’m glad I ran across them. They make some straightforward rock tunes that are instantly enjoyable. It’s easy to see some Pixies influences, and lead singer Renée LoBue’s vocals bring to mind Patti Smith as well. There is also some really exceptional guitar work on the record courtesy of former Luna guitarist Sean Eden. Check out these two tracks that are especially nice. I don't usually find myself in agreement with George Will, although I certainly respect his intellect. However, I thought this brief article on religion in America was worth sharing.I am encouraged by the numbers he cites which indicate a doubling of the number of nonbelievers between 1990 and 2001. Similarly, it is nice to see some recognition that politicians may be starting to think twice about atheist-bashing. It will be interesting to see how the mid-term elections affect this. Finally, I appreciate Will's observation about the unrealistic nature of the Christian persecution complex. This is a topic about which I have previously posted and which I continue to find fascinating. This is particularly true this time of year when complaints about a "war on Christmas" are common.As long as Christians continue to equate disagreement and criticism with persecution, they will continue to feel persecuted. Of course feeling persecuted is quite different from being persecuted, but this poin
