Album Review: Camper Van Beethoven - New Roman Times (2004)[LP]
Camper Van Beethoven (CVB) is one of many groups that miraculously reunited after I developed a serious interest in them (others include: The House of Love, Mission Of Burma, Pixies, Wire). A lucky man I am indeed. Unlike the Pixies, CVB managed to both reunite and record a new album. New Roman Times (2004) is a welcome gift from a band that dissolved at the height of their creative zenith. Follo

ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN...MAKE WAY FOR DINNER ROLLS!
“Bread, milk and butter are of venerable antiquity. They taste of the morning of the world.”Leigh Hunt Knotted All Over...for dinner!I've had dinner rolls on my mind for a while with the Chuck Berry song that hums in the background. Yeastophobia being a thing of the past, I'm gingerly inching my way forward to make things I dreamt about for long. The last time I bought dinner rolls was the last time I bought them. They were so 'not real'...nothing to them. So I got on & read a few baking books about shaping & knotting breads...what fun!Dreaming of Garlicky Dinner Rolls...Then came the time for recipe searches. I had a couple ingrained in my brain for months, but the one that kept coming back was one @ Aparna's My Diverse Kitchen. I made these pretty rolls adapting her recipe.

      Copying Beethoven
I just finished watching Copying Beethoven. There were two things in it that I thought were stellar. The first is the part where Beethoven is critiquing his copyist's work. He tells her that it's all about structure and form and has no soul. That was just so poetic. He's so right. While I generally teach from the rules, structure, form perspective, I do so because I find that is the piece that is lacking. Without structure, your soul cannot be held together in an artistic way. But what differentiates an artist from a practitioner is the harmonious blend of both. Anyway, that was nicely done. The other thing I liked about this movie was the music. The music was just fantastic. The music from this movie reminded me so much of Egyptian classical music because of the complexity, intensity, emotional quality, and in some cases the simplicity. There are pieces of music that I just can't dance to because I get too wrapped up in listening that I cease to move altogether. Some music is just

Beethoven's black violinist - post from AfriClassical
William J. Zick wrote an interesting post on his AfriClassical blog earlier this week, stating: The rumor that Beethoven is Black just won't go away, in spite of the lack of any real evidence. What most people are unaware of is Beethoven's real relationship with the Black violinist George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower (1780-1860). Today I have posted the meticulously documented essay on his life by my principal adviser, Dr. Dominique-René de Lerma of Lawrence University, who has specialized in Black composers and musicians for four decades. Beethoven wrote his Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 9 in A Minor, Op. 47 to display the virtuoso talent of Bridgetower. Beethoven rescinded his dedication to Bridgetower because of a personal disagreement prior to publication. It was also George Bridgetower who was accompanied on piano by Beethoven at the work's debut performance in 1803 at Vienna's Auergarten Theater. Check out the complete post he

Extracted the carbon from the musician's brown hair, exposed it to temperatures approximating the depths of hell. A synthetic diamond company has transformed 10 strands of Beethoven's hair they had result into a three blue "diamonds" sized at .56 carats. Expected to sell for up to $1m on eBay, regarding the estimated £500k price tag. Hoping a high profile musician such as Sir Elton John or Sir Paul McCartney will buy it. But with it being on eBay, anyone can bid on it. LifeGem, the company that has made the diamond, is hoping there will be bids from around the world. One of the resulting Round Brilliant gems will go to the University Archives, LifeGem will keep another, while the third will be auctioned for the benefit of various charities including the UK's Dreams Come True, an organisation which fulfils the wishes of terminally and seriously ill children

      Beethoven
