I’ve taken to grocery shopping late in the evenings, after the kids are in bed. Walking up and down the aisles, enjoying my solo jaunt and searching for much needed items like Spotted Dick and Ovaltine, I’m always surprised when I see people shopping with their children that late in the evening. Since my children go to bed [...]

Bedtime Stories For Children - A common advice given to a parent by counselors is to read to your child from a keen age. Reading is synonymous with bonding. As you speak to your child in your mother tongue, make sure to read to the child in the English language. The universal language helps the child to build his knowledge and vocabulary. Fables on animals, adventures entailing ghosts, dragons and volcanoes are much exciting for a child. More: continued here Other Review: Classic Disney, Vol. 4: 60 Years of Musical Magic (Audio CD)

It is always an advantage to teach very young children to pray. I started to teach Ethan to say his prayers at an age when he can't even speak yet. I just tell him that it's time to pray to Jesus. No explanation. I was the one praying while he had his hands folded. We both say Amen at the end of the prayer.Praying should be a habit. We should start our children on the praying habit at the earliest possible time. Here are some evening or bedtime prayers you can teach your child.Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear me: Bless Thy little child to-night; Through the darkness be Thou near me, Keep me safe till morning light. One of the best natural sedatives is tryptophan, an amino acid component of many plant and animal proteins.Tryptophan is one of the ingredients necessary for the body to make serotonin, the neurotransmitter best known for creating feelings of calm, and for making you sleepy. However, the trick is to combine foods that have some tryptophan with ample carbohydrate. That’s because in order for insomnia-busting tryptophan to work, it has to make its way to the brain. Unfortunately, all amino acids compete for transport to the brain. When you add carbs, they cause the release of insulin, which takes the competing amino acids and incorporates them into muscle…but leaves tryptophan alone, so it can make its way to the brain, be converted to serotonin, and cause sleepiness. Serotonin-producing

Here is their synopsis of the story:[...] Washington Square: The battle between a father and a daughter is usually portrayed in literature as a struggle between a headstrong but feisty girl and a tradition-bound lead weight of a father. Henry James of course had to do it somewhat differently. He tells a story of an intelligent man riding the turn of the tide in mid-nineteenth century New York, and watching what he sees as his numbingly dull and conventional daughter making the

At the risk of sounding weird, I’ll let you in on a secret: I still read at night to my almost thirteen-year-old son. We have found that our nighttime ritual, cuddling and hearing my voice, calms his anxieties and promises a better chance at a good night’s sleep (for both of us).
Most of the time we read Young Adult fiction, e.g. Ranger’s Apprentice and Eragon (we liked the book so much better than the movie!), but occasionally he chooses an old, early childhood favorite like Toot & Puddle or Guess How Much I Love You.
Last night we read a new picture book, I Love You More, written by Laura Duksta and illustrated by Karen Keesler. (Wait till you read the author/illustrator's personal stories!) This charming book is a “flip story.” The reader hears both the mother’s definition of I Love You, then flips to read the child’s. Both are equal, yet express their love with different words.
Mom: “I love you mightier than the mightiest wind ever blew. I love you f
Back in 1982, when Jim Starlin wrote the Death of Captain Marvel, where Mar-Vell of the Kree, who'd been written as an allusion to defects from Communist Russia when he first appeared in 1967, died of something like leukemia, that was a definite masterpiece that also took an ideal path of having its star protagonist die via illness instead of being beaten to death by his enemies.

What beats a bedtime story? How about four bedtime stories?
My sons kidnapped me! They wouldn’t let me go. I started with one story (which was our deal), then a second, just to show them I cared. When my time was up, the little terrorists started pressing me. “You’re not a nice daddy if you leave now”; and “We’re going tell mommy that you…” (well, we’ll skip that part…). “Okay”, I answered with faked authority, “but only one more!” Somehow that one became two.

I am setting a bad example for my son. At night when I put him to bed I climb in with him and we snuggle. Snuggling leads to him jumping up and down, laughing and this of course leads to tackles, tickles and horseplay. After about 30 minutes of this he is either wound up and can’t go to sleep or exhausted and ready to collapse. I consider it my special bonding time.
The bad part is the expectation that this is going to happen each night and what it will teach him about bedtime. I worry that in the near future it will be a problem and a hard habit to break. The problem is, I love this time. It is my time to be silly and have fun. I can’t explain how important it is to me that I get this time with him.
There has to be a balance, I just don’t know if I want to find it, or if I can.

“I can’t take it anymore!” a young mother’s desperate e-mail pleaded, “it takes anywhere from two to four hours to get my kids to bed at night and I am so tired. Sometimes I sit in their room and cry as I wait for them to fall asleep. What should I do?”
Sleep problems are a tremendous issue to parents. Nobody informs couples when they are expecting their first baby that “sleeping like a baby” means taking two hours to fall asleep and then waking up every hour and a half for the first year or two and not actually sleeping through the night until age five.
Many parents, even after having read all of the parenting books, are plagued with countless nights of difficult bedtimes, pop-ups (kids leaving their beds after lights out), and musical beds.
Is there a way to get kids to bed without the evening drama? How do parents end the day on a positive note with big yawns and kids happy to put their heads down?

Few nights ago, during bedtime, the following conversation took place…
Suz: Ian, if you earn a lot of money in the future, would you want to buy a big house?
Ian: Yes, of course!
Suz: If you have a big house, can I come and stay with you?
Ian: Yes. And Daddy, and Kakak (maid), and Isabel and Ian also.
I then teased him, ‘Would you want to get married?’
Ian said, ‘Yes…’
Suz: What if your wife said she doesn’t want to stay with me?
(just wanted to let him know sometimes he can’t get all he wants)
He replied in a sad tone, ‘That is so sad…’
I was very surprised with the words he chose! ‘So Sad’?
I then challenged him further, ‘Ya, that is so sad, so how?’
To my surprised, he said, ‘I will tell her: GO AWAY!’
Hahahaha! He is saying this now, but I think ‘go away’ is for me in the future!
Anyway, that could probably happen, so it is very important (and I’ve determined) to be independent and not relying on our kids when we are old.

My daughter recently returned from her summer visit to grandma’s house. While recapping the adventures she shared with her cousins who live on the East Coast she managed to slip in the fact that my mother required her to be in bed by 9pm each night. This rekindled a conversation that she and I had late last summer. What, exactly, is the point of a bedtime anyway?
An hour or so of searching the web turned up hundreds of articles about the importance of bedtime routines, rituals, stories and music, but not a single reason why bedtimes, themselves are important. I did manage to find numerous articles on how much sleep children should have at different ages. However, each of these also pointed out that every child is different and their individual needs should be taken into account. My daughter is 11 and wakes up between 6 and 7 every morning without an alarm clock. 9 times out of 10 this wakeup time is not effected by her bedtime.
While I spent many weekends enforcing the 9

No one can claim to know everything about any topic, not even the most learned of men. What I are going to do is to provide you with some of the fundamentals of Background Noise to make you aware of the topic. This post is all about Baby bedtime comfort vs Background Noise and how to make you more and more about this topic. If you are interested in this topic, do not waste your time and continue with this post. Information is infinite and any claim of having all the information on any given topic should always be taken with a pinch of salt and this must now be very much clear after reading this post on Baby bedtime comfort.A fussy or crying baby can make for a fussy and often frustrated parent. There are many reasons a baby could be fussy or unable to sleep, including illness, colic, or something as simple as either too much noise or too little noise. Before altering your baby’s sleeping environment, take a moment to evaluate just why your baby has been fussy or upset at bedtime.
We have finally stumbled across a painless bedtime routine that gets the kids down sans crying.
We start with a bath at about 7:30. Bath is followed by getting into a clean diaper and PJs, then a round of nursing, then into the cribs. Once in the cribs we read two stories to each child, then take turns sitting in the rocking chair reading or doing puzzles for about 20 minutes. Just having someone in the room appears to be enough to get the babies, who are really toddlers now, to be able to fall asleep.
Naptime has also become easy. At about noon I pop them into their cribs and walk away. Any complaints about this, which are rare, are over by the time I hit the foot of the stairs. This nap is consistently 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours long, with the occasional 3-hour stretch. It’s amazing.
Before you dive through your computer to strangle me, however, I must add that Saturday night I was tending to someone at 9, 11, 12, 2 and 4. They woke up at 6 but seemed to be just talking so
Nurse J. F stands in crib and looks petulant.
Nurse F. J tosses and turns in crib.
Read three stories to F. J seems to be out.
Go to leave. J is not out. Both stand and stare balefully at me.
Clean kitchen for 5 minutes while screaming varies in pitch from “hey” to “OHMYGOD YOU’VE ABANDONED ME FOREVER AND I AM GOING TO DIE HERE”
Go back upstairs and soothe babies. Pats and nibbles from the breast while they stand in their cribs work.
Babies start to giggle and look at one another.
After a few minutes of giggling, J lies down and falls asleep.
F reaches for me through her crib bars. She is being her most engaging, flirty self.
Play with F through crib bars for about 5 minutes. She tugs on my hair. I nibble on her fingers. And so on.
Nurse F lying down in my bedroom for about 3 minutes.
Put her back in her own crib.
Success.
When Lullabeds sent us a story blanket to review, we all thought it looked pretty cool but we had no idea just how cool it really was until we turned it on. It’s amazing!
Story Blankets are childrens comforters/duvet covers which each have 133 mini LED’s and entertain your children (and you!) with a show of lights & sounds at bedtime. In story mode, the blanket gives you two minutes of rhythmically moving lights accompanied by a musical soundtrack. The blanket then goes into sleep mode consisting of one minute of gently fading lights that slowly dissolve to end the story.
The Space Story Blanket from Lullabeds (click to listen to the soundtrack) is just about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen on a kid’s bed. From 6 months of age into upper elementary school, children are endlessly fascinated by it. Just don’t expect them to go to sleep after just one “story.” They’ll restart it a few times before they’re tired enough to

Most of us think that the mere sight of a bed is enough for us to lie down and try to go to sleep. People find it hard to sleep when they are on the bed. Chances are they will think of something that they have forgotten to do like work, or something in mind that has been unresolved.
Some may think that these relaxation techniques may be abrupt and a waste of time but if we truly emphasize on sleeping comfortably, then we may try them out before we sum up everything. There is more to sleeping than plain lying down on your bed mattress. We need to psychologically prepare ourselves before the desired respite can be achieved.

While there are many children that do not have any bedtime issues, there are many children who do. Not every child is able to go to bed at night, and get all of the required sleep they need. The following paragraphs will discuss children and bedtime issues, including bed wetting, nightmares, and inability to fall asleep at night. Bed Wetting and Children Bed wetting is one of the most common bedtime issues with children. Boys are most often bed wetters as opposed to girls. Studies have shown that boys wet the bed up to twice as much as girls do. Bed wetting can not only cause stress for your child, but very often it causes embarrassment, as well. You should consult with a doctor if your child's if: Your child is over the age of 7 and is still bed wetting. Your child is potty trained then all the sudden starts bed wetting. Your child tells you they need help. It is also a good idea to seek professional help if your child's bed wetting is affecting his ability to sleep. Nightm

Mummy says reading before going to bed is good for you. I think it helps you relax or something. I’ve been following Mummy’s example by reading one of Daddy’s books.
It’s about these four short, curlywurlies who go on a quest to the Middle of the Earth or some place and they had this magic ring they had to destroy. But they had this fella who followed them because he wanted to play with the ring himself. Hmmm …. this fella sounds a lot like Momo! Muahahaha!!!
Hey!! This is not Lord of the Rings!! What is this? Bored of the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon?? Urgh! I thought I was reading a classic!
And what’s this?
“It’s my party and I’ll snub who I want to?”
Sounds very elitist to me. Perhaps I should get Daddy to explain this to me.
All too soon, sleepiness overcame me, and I got drowsy. Book forgotten, I turned to my trusty Smilt and drifted off to dreamland.
Can you put away the camera now, Daddy? Thank you!

I can’t get him to keep his eyes shut long enough to transport him from where he’s fallen asleep to his crib. He’s cranky because he hasn’t napped, but won’t sleep because he’s cranky.
Cry, cry, cry.

Casey writes:
What time do the babes go to bed? I’m wondering if I should make a cube of solids as an addition to bedtime routine.
The evening schedule, in theory, goes thus as we sit here at 8 months:
6:00 - B. gets home
6:30 - Dinner. The babies sit in their high chairs and eat with us. Right now they are up to 2 - 3 cubes (ounces) of solids each. F. also feeds herself slices of avocado and banana as well as her “teething biscuit”.
7:00 - B. takes the babies upstairs and plays with them in their nursery while I clean up dinner and get a baby break.
8:00 - One baby gets a bath. Then both are changed into PJs and a sleep sack and I nurse them down.
I don’t think the addition of the solids has really helped the sleeping issues (or hurt them), though I have heard that for some babies solids right before bed actually makes getting them down harder.

So, what I have to do is lay with him in his bed until he falls asleep, which is only about 15 minutes or less, BUT, usually I end up falling asleep too, and I don't want to do that. I will never have any alone time if this keeps up.

One did a twist, and one did a jumping-jack, while they shook hands. They did hundreds of different handshakes. All in just a couple of minutes. So you could imagine how freaky that looked. There were two strange people controlling the robots. One person was in one country, and another person was all the way in another country. There was one kid in one country, and he was playing a duck-hunting game with a little controller. While in the other country, there was a little kid and he was playing with a remote-control
This week has been...rough.
On Monday I was up until the very wee hours because, for some reason, I couldn't fall asleep. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the time change or sleeping until noon or what, but I was awake. Will was also not tired, but ...
