Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson was arrested on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas for boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. The boat Benson was operating had 15 passengers on it and was stopped by the Lower Colorado River Authority for a random safety inspection. Before I get into this, you should know something. Our sons love the Berenstain Bears. They have about ten or so books, and we go to the library quite often to check more out, sometimes the same ones two or three times. When I was a young'un I remember reading Old Hat New Hat and ranked it up there with the great literary classics. You could say our family has a history (book-wise) with the Bears.
Also, both Julie and I have great respect for Stan and Jan Berenstain, and their son Mike. They have had great success for many many years with hundreds of books published (252!). They have covered just about any topic under the sun from strangers to television to Santa Claus to doctor visits.
There are two things that make us cringe about the Bears, though.

I've been meaning to post about this story since I saw it on the web last week. The Daily Mail has this amazing story of polar bears playing and cuddling with a team of huskies in northern Canada. For those of you who have not seen the video yet, I definitely recommend watching it! It's truly amazing and heart warming to watch those big polar bears cuddling the dogs. Last week, leaving the grocery store, I noticed a box filled with picture books, donated for local kids who need them. I looked in the in the box, just out of curiosity. Sitting right on top was a book called "Bears" by Ruth Krauss. Wow! My socks were knocked off. Not only do I enjoy Ruth Krauss's wonderful stories and poems and artwork, but this actual book was copyright 1948, and was in pristine condition to boot. I flipped through the book and took photos of the spreads. Oh how I coveted it! But at least I have these pictures. Check them out here.(Now that I know that box is there, I will contribute and bring a copy of "The Months" to the grocery store, next time I go!)

Sure, it might seem like a nice thing to believe - polar bears roaring ferociously, chasing poor, defenseless penguins around over snow and ice, and devouring them whole. In the moat of the castle at Cesky Krumlov there live four bears. Bears have been kept at the castle since 1707 and they are as popular as ever with the visitors.Every Christmas Eve the bears get a special treat. Several Christmas trees are placed in the moat (you can see one behind the bear in the photo) covered with gingerbread, cakes, sweets and fruit. But the goodies do not end there. As the bears are kept in their den, children and their families start to arrive bringing food presents for the bears. With the bears safely out of the way the families are allowed to place the presents under the trees themselves, the only time in the year they are allowed into the moat. Then the families retire and the bears are let out to feast on the festive goodies, with the children watching safely from the bridge.The bears in the moat are a legacy of a time when wild bears could be found in the Sumava Mountains to the south of Cesky Krumlov.
