      Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, BC.
I went back through my files and picked up a photograph that I took a couple of years ago when I first visited Victoria BC. I had heard so much about the city and its beauty and it did not disappoint me at all. Then I decided to take a walk in Beacon Hill Park. And I understood why this is the best kept secret in all of Canada. Everyone who has been to Victoria has seen the beauty of the harbor and enjoyed a cup of tea at the Empress... well that is a must! But few have taken the time to walk South of the downtown core and delve into the real beauty of Beacon Hill Park. Here is a taste of it:

The United States: The Beacon of Hope
~Snooper~Today has been a very long day for me. I must have read at least a thousand articles or more today. I am tired. I am angry. I decided that being awake at 0430 on a Sunday morning, I needed to shut this damn computer off, having been up since 0900 Saturday. IN that process of shutting down for a spell, I decided to scan the email and see if I missed anything. Well, I didn't exactly miss this email...I didn't want to read it because it was from Madeleine Albright. She was begging for money so the Leftinistra majority in the Senate would rise from 51. I would imagine that the goal would be at least 60.From the verbiage in the body of the message, I have determined that beyond a shadow of a doubt, All-not-so-bright is a member of the Blame America First conundrum. The United States has long been seen as a beacon of hope for people across the globe. I experienced this first hand when I arrived in our country with my family in 1948 after the Communist takeover of my nativ

Facebook Partners Quiet on Beacon Fallout
Many partners in Facebook's Beacon seem reticent to address the raging privacy controversy surrounding the ad program, resorting to terse, vague statements or opting for outright silence when asked for comment. Understanding Facebook Beacon
I received an email notification today from YouTube about a video created by Matt Dickman. It is a video about Facebook Beacon. In the video Matt gives a demonstration how Facebook Beacon works by using a real-life example showing how you can set up Typepad blog to send blog feed to your Facebook dashboard. You can control what data you would like to allow Facebook Beacon to send to your Facebook. The example is simple and clearly shows the integration process between the two sites (Typepad and Facebook). It is worth watching the video if you curious and like to know more about how Facebook Beacon works.

How to Block Facebook Beacon using Mozilla Firefox
Last week our class discussed the privacy concerns surrounding Facebook Beacon, which was launched November 6th.Here's a link from WikiHow on how to use Firefox to completely disable Beacon. Eventually, like the News Feed, Facebook is going to come up with their own way to permenantly opt-out (or how about even an option to opt-in??). In the meantime, Firefox users can make sure their data isn't being mined and sent out using BlockSite.Has anyone tried this? Let me know how it went for you!

There is an easy way to avoid Facebook Beacon ads
Surprisingly enough, there has been a pile of whining about Facebook and its latest bit with advertising, from privacy implications, to just about everything under the sun. what has not been stated, yet needs to be: There is an easy way to stop worrying about Facebook beacon advertising — Stop using Facebook. If you really want to add insult to injury, you can also stop shopping at stores no matter how cool that use Facebook beacon advertising. If you really hate the whole thing and think that it is evil, vote with your clicking fingers, just stop going to Facebook. If facebook’s population and page views suddenly come to a screeching halt, well that might be the way to change what you or the general public wants changed. Silicon Alley insider basically says the same thing, and they are the only other ones who seem to avoid whining and provide at least a short term solution, much like stop using Facebook. The short-term solution: Turn off Beacon until you can make it fully

Hike Safely, use a distress beacon
Hikers, trampers and fishermen/women visiting New Zealand’s national parks are encouraged to take with them a vital piece of equipment that is proving a life saver for many lost or injured visitors to these remote areas. The personal EPIRB (Emergency position indicating radio beacons) distress beacon is readily available for purchase or hire from as little as $10 per day. A small cost to save ones life. An alternative to this is the Mountain Radio which can also be hired. Most Department of Conservation visitors have both devices for hire. All communication systems have limitations. Ideally both types of emergency alert systems should be carried. The advantage of this is that the EPIRB is only an emergency device while the mountain radio offers the ability to utilise the daily scheduled contact times for current weather forecasts including mountain snow wind and river levels. An incident over the weekend in Mount Aspiring National Park illustrated the practical use in locating a hiker

"I am both Muslim and Christian" - Rev. Ann Holmes Redding | a beacon of hope in our troubled time
Selection from The Seattle Times, Article by Janet I. TuShortly after noon on Fridays, the Rev. Ann Holmes Redding ties on a black headscarf, preparing to pray with her Muslim group on First Hill. On Sunday mornings, Redding puts on the white collar of an Episcopal priest. She does both, she says, because she's Christian and Muslim.Redding, who until recently was director of faith formation at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, has been a priest for more than 20 years. Now she's ready to tell people that, for the last 15 months, she's also been a Muslim - drawn to the faith after an introduction to Islamic prayers left her profoundly moved. She says she felt an inexplicable call to become Muslim, and to surrender to God - the meaning of the word "Islam.""It wasn't about intellect," she said. "All I know is the calling of my heart to Islam was very much something about my identity and who I am supposed to be. "I could not not be a Muslim."How it happened | In fall 2005, a local Muslim

Mt Beacon, Fishkill Ridge/ Hudson Highlands Hiking Trail
I would not call myself an environmentalist by any stretch of the imagination, however I think that everyone enjoys the adventure of hiking and the outdoors. From growing up in the Hudson Valley as a Boy Scout to hiking with my family I was exposed to one of the number one things this region is known for, the outdoors. I love the city I live in because the area is a densely packed area that is growing faster and faster every day. With three cities within 15 minutes of each other and being just over an hour north of NYC, the area of about 100,000 people has all kinds of things to do. Sounds like a lot of metropolitan areas, however this area has some of our nation’s most renown hiking and outdoor activities. In specific is the backdrop of my city, the Hudson Highlands/ Fishkill Ridge Mountains and Parks. An area so majestic and with such breathtaking views that it was included on the New York State Seal. Something I always thought was funny that the mountains behind my city was on

      Beacon Bash
On Sunday I took part in my planned LDWA (Long Distance Walkers Association) event, The Beacon Bash, near Wigan. It is a 21 mile event with approximately 2200ft of ascent. I had entered as a runner, but the day before I got an email from Alan Silcock. Alan entered the 2006 Marathon des Sables but had to retire through injury on day 2. He is going back for the 2007 MDS in 5 weeks. He is very busy cramming in a lot of last minute training as he had to take 2 months off around Christmas after having an operation to remove his appendix. He is also walking this years’ MDS, and not running at all. He decided to come along to the Beacon Bash, so I said I'd walk with him instead of running. We arrived to the event late, as Alan’s alarm clock hadn't gone off, so we set off about half an hour after everyone else. I was carrying my Raidlight rucksack, but this time I had the front pack attachment on too. This I filled with nibbles, some cashew nuts, dried bananas, dried cranberries,
