      Battling the Christmas Blues
Foreword: Dear Mom, This has nothing to do with you (well, maybe a tiny bit) but it is more about the reality of what happens as families grow. Do not launch into ‘what can I do to fix this for my baby’ mode. There is nothing to fix. I’m just thinking out loud. I love you and we WILL be home for Christmas. I can’t imaging NOT waking up in that house on Christmas morning. Today I have been sitting at my desk unable to focus on work. Instead I have been trying to empty my mind, writing and re-writing a post about how the month long preparation for and eventual celebration of Christmas is looking to be yet another let down. The Christmas Blues have struck and I need to find a way to get that Christmas Spirit back. I wake up every year on Thanksgiving morning feeling so hopeful only to find myself crawling into bed on December 25th wondering where the magic went. Even on Thanksgiving day I get a preview of the lack of spirit as we gather with my dad’s

Sleeping That Extra Half Hour Should Be Costly - Battling Traffic Jams With the Proper Economic Incentives
I was slowly making my way through traffic today when various thoughts occurred to me. This has been an especially tough week with traffic jams lasting forever.I'm curios as to the economic nature of traffic jams. Surely given the proper incentives traffic jams can be eased considerably. I myself consider standing in traffic jams a complete waste of precious time. This waste of a valuable resource is a strong enough incentive for me to leave home early and return late. This does not seem to be the case for everyone. It seems some people don't really mind their wasted time.I believe people often lack the understanding of economic value as utility and attribute it to money only. Their time is not as precious. An interesting experiment would be to try and translate that loss to a common and measurable quantifier: Money. The waste caused by traffic jams is enormous and encapsulates time, environmental damage, stress, noise, car wear and more. Clearly reducing traffic jams is an economic

No - an ever more alarming reality. “Eighty per cent of the abuse seen in online child porn is done by people the children know,” said Leila Ben Debba, of ICMEC, the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Chidren. Experts like Ben Debba believe direct family members to be responsible for 45 per cent of the abuse that is later downloaded and viewed by thousands of “customers.” The rest are doctors, teachers, sports coaches or other persons of authority, permeating all social levels. Battling Barrett Traded To Padres
The Chicago Cubs Wednesday traded catcher Michael Barrett and cash to the San Diego Padres in exchange for San Diego's backup catcher Rob Bowen, and a low Single A outfielder Kyler Burke. Barrett who may be better known for his fights than his Major League ability was involved in two blowups with teammates in recent weeks. The catcher was slugged by pitcher Carlos Zambrano after a loss to the Atlanta Braves on June 1. He then got into shouting match with Chicago pitcher Rich Hill in the dugout during a game against the Seattle Mariners. Barrett hitting .256 with nine homers and 29 RBI has had some problems with his defense. Barrett was suspended for ten games last year after punching out White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski after he had been run over at home while trying to protect the plate.(C) Copyright thesackattack.com 2007

Buccaneers QB’s Battling For Starting Job

Garcia definitely has the desire to win and wants the starting job. He said, “(Gruden) has given me the opportunity to be the leader of this team and when I get those opportunities I choke them to death.” Garcia desperately wants to be the starting quarterback and he probably will. Coach Gruden hasn’t forgotten about Chris Simms, “Chris Simms has a bright future. I think Chris is a good player but two of the last three seasons he’s had serious injuries. Right now, he’s not in rhythm.” Chris Simms said, “It’s just June, I take it with a grain of salt, I’m coming int

IAN Bell closed in on a battling seventh Test hundred as England reached 7-296 on the first day of the third Test with West Indies at Old Trafford today (AEST). Both teams enjoyed good periods as England, after winning the toss, reached 1-112 at lunch. West Indies, recovering from a record second Test defeat at Headingley, hit back with four wickets in the afternoon session when England managed just 55 runs. Bell's unbeaten 77, from 150 balls, ensured England recovered from 5-166 to a relatively competitive total on a pitch that is offering some pace and bounce to the quicker bowlers. England, 1-0 up in the four-match series after drawing at Lord's and winning at Headingley, is seeking a series-clinching victory before next week's fourth Test in Durham. Barry Bonds: Battling Against Himself
Hello, friends. Ted here again. Last time I did guest duty for the weekend on Our Book of Scrap - i.e. last weekend - I basically just did some recaps and lookaheads, and a pretty shoddy essay about what winning the eight seed might mean to the Clippers, Lakers, and Hornets. I got news for you. Here's what it means: losing four straight to Dallas.Anyway, wanting to do a little more, I decided I'd write a little essay this Saturday morning. In a week of sports dominated by headlines related to the intersection of race and athletics, a man that's always been near the forefront - Barry Bonds - and a record that's always been an integral part of that discussion - all-time home runs - are increasingly relevant. And last night, Bonds went deep twice. It was pretty interesting where he did it. Why? Ech, read on.Some people claim Georgetown basketball in the 1980's saved the game, by letting urban black America "take it back" (with apologies to Clerks II). I went to Georgetown and I think

The bill would allow any state that objected to the law's standards and testing to excuse itself from those requirements and still receive federal school aid......The president, who has disdained compromise with the Democrats on Iraq policy, or the budget, or much of anything else, finds himself dependent on Democratic help to rescue this notable domestic initiative. Boss salutes battling Addicks
Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased to beat Charlton, but admitted he was surprised by the quality of the Addicks' display at Old Trafford. Goals in either half from Ji-sung Park and Darren Fletcher sealed the points for United, but the visitors served up a few scares throughout the afternoon. "It was hard work for three points," Sir Alex told MUTV. "There were periods when there was a stalemate about the game and you have to give credit to Charlton, I thought it was a really good performance by them. "It was a surprising performance I must say, because when teams are at the bottom of the league they don't always have the confidence to play, and I thought Charlton did." Alan Pardew's side almost drew level when Dennis Rommedahl's free kick was flicked fractionally wide of Tomasz Kuszczak's goal, shortly before Fletcher clinched the victory. The Boss reflected: "They had a free kick that was glanced on and it must have missed the post by a matter of inches. And these are worrying moment
