After going to all the expense of hiring armour, horse and a green fluffy dragon suit, at 11.00am the man who hopes to get elected to the London Assembly on 1 May got on his horse (well pony) and led a parade – or rather a group that struggled to get into double figures – from the Broadway Theatre in Barking, down East Street and terminating at Barking Park.It was all over in 30 minutes, no masses of adoring flag waving crowds, in fact nobody at all other than the eight police officers on bikes with their Inspector.Dicky was not a happy bunny and was last seen heading for the Capt Cook to drown his sorrows. We wonder whether he has to declare the costs of this farce on his election e

Portentous Barking: Improving Star Trek Novels
by Adam Hunault Recently I had the pleasure of attending the Star Trek books panel at New York Comic Con. I was fascinated as the editor and a few authors described what was to come in Star Trek fiction. In middle school I read close to a hundred of these paperback novels. Maybe I should check these books out again, I thought during the panel, and snapped up a free preview of the upcoming novels. I opened it to the first page of Star Trek: Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru, by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels (or possibly Christopher L. Bennett, the preview booklet credits both in different places). I immediately remembered why I don’t read Star Trek novels.

"There's still a little pull back there when I try to get out over my front side. So we'll see how I feel tomorrow."If he is unable to pitch from the mound tomorrow, he will have to be pushed back from his April 2nd start in the Bronx. The Morning Bus Stop: Part 2 - Or How to Get Your Dogs to Stop Barking
To continue on the Bus Stop theme, I thought I’d share how I got my dogs to stop barking like maniacs every time the bus rounded the corner. But first a little background on how I came upon the solution: There is a woman I know who I aspire to be when I grow up. She is a retired Ph.d. psychologist and is well into her second career as a dog trainer. In my opinion, she ranks as one of the top trainers in the country. But she’s a private person, so if any of you live in western NC and need a good trainer, please contact me and I’ll put you in touch with her. We were talking on the phone the other day, when a UPS truck drove up. Naturally, her six dogs started barking. Instead of yelling at them to stop (which is what most people would do), she went outside and said to them, “So guys, something interesting out here? I see it’s the UPS truck. Thank you. Replace Unwanted Barking With More Positive Behaviors
By: peterIt is a normal phenomenon for a dog to bark from time to time but sometimes this behavior intensifies the annoyance of many dog owners. It has been found that the habit which has been created in the childhood seems to continue to exist in their later stage if not treated well. There can be various reasons that cause unwanted barking which needs to be solved by canvassing the cause before you begin the program of retraining with the help of your animal behaviorist or veterinarian.Among the various causes of unwanted barking the most important is attention seeking barking. Your dog may have developed this habit in his younger stage to seek attention especially when he is left alone for long periods of time. If barking is suspected as an unwanted behavior then you can you can start to retrain allowing him to explore the world around him and taking an obedience class which is good mental exercise and will help you to better communicate with your dog. Dogs in Florida town must limit their barking
Dogs in Mount Dora, Florida will need to limit their barking according to a new ordinance just passed by the City Council there. Fido can bark. Just as long as the dog is not yapping for longer than five minutes or sporadically for half an hour. That’s what City Council members decided Tuesday in their controversial efforts to modify Mount Dora’s noise ordinance to quiet barking pooches who bother their neighbors, but not make scofflaws out of dog lovers. “We don’t have any intention to form any task force to go after animals,” council member Michael Tedder said. “The true intent is to make the [dog] owners aware of their neighbors and their neighbors’ comfort.” After all, Mount Dora officials have long prided themselves on creating a dog-friendly community. The city opened a dog park in June. Downtown merchants — including a pet bakery on Donnelly Street — often leave water bowls outside their front doors for passing canines.

Dog Barking Sounds - How to Translate Your Dog's Bark
Dog barking sounds don't mean a lot to many people. For the most part, they are simply acknowledged as a sort of vocal exercises done by dogs, and those who aren't fond of these animals may even consider barking dogs a loud disturbance. However, they are much more than that. Dog barking sounds are actually a basic method of communication for dogs.Apart from that, there hasn't been a detailed explanation or better understanding as to why dogs bark and how they have managed to grow so different from their ancestor, the wolf. The latter also barks occasionally, but wolves in general much prefer howling as a way to communicate. This is a far cry from dogs, who appear to have a fondness for barking as often and as loudly as possible! Yet dogs share this fondness for barking with wolf cubs. This fact--along with many other similar physical features they share with dogs, as well as habits like the tendency to be submissive--has led experts to theorize on neoteny. Neoteny is a condition whe

So it’s time to rant, and I have a feeling what I’m going to say will be something that many people wish they could say to their neighbors. You know the ones. The ones that leave their dogs outside all day in the backyard so they can bark for hours at a time endlessly. First, I want to give you an idea of my living conditions. I’m currently self employed. The two dogs have arrived, they are staying for a week while their family goes on holiday. One dog, Ben, is a Border Collie, and the other is a Golden Labrador called Libby. The labrador is quite aggressive, which is unusual for a Labrador. She growled at me as soon as she saw me - cheek!! The Collie was a nice friendly dog, Mum seemed to like him and I had to give a little bark to remind her that I am her dog! The family are really enjoying looking after the dogs, and they are being paid, so they are very happy.
