Barca's Messi set to face Man Utd
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is set to win his fitness battle for the Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester United on 23 April. Argentine sensation Messi, 20, has been named in the Barca squad for Saturday's La Liga game against Recreativo Huelva. He tore a muscle in his left thigh in the Champions League last 16 game against Celtic on 4 March and has been recovering from injury in Argentina. Barca are without Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho for the rest of the season. The 28-year-old, who has struggled to hold down a regular place this season, pulled a leg muscle in training last week. Barca forwards Thierry Henry and Bojan Krkic picked up knocks in the European game against Schalke on Wednesday, while midfielder Andres Iniesta has a knee problem. Portuguese midf

      Barca Exposed?
Very much like the swordsman in Raiders of the Lost Arc who wielded his sword all over and threatened to attack, all it took was one shot from Indiana Jones to end that threat. This was a long time coming for the blaugrana.  If you look at numbers alone, Barcelona is one of the best defenses in La Liga.  In their recent run of good form where they won their last sixteen matches in all competitions, there was still one loose end.  Their defense was the one aspect of the game that kept their opponents alive and well.  Exhibit A-  Celtic's performance at home against the blaugrana where they only mustered up three shots on goal, but of those three two beat Victor Valdés.  In that match Barcelona dominated in possession 68-32.Exhibit B-  Valencia gave Barcel

      Brilliant Baptista Blast Beats Barca
Real Madrid pulled out a 1-0 stunner over arch rivals F.C. Barcelona on a brilliant 36th minute half-volley by Julio Baptista. Minutes earlier, Real backstop Ilker Casillas turned in a pair of acrobatic saves to keep the Spanish champs level. It was Los Blancos' first win at Camp Nou since December 2003 and gives Bernd Schuster's side a seven point lead in the Primera Barca pushed hard in the second half but Real's defense held firm. Lionel Messi was clearly missed by the Catalan side, but Bojan Krkic's impact as a late-game substitute will have Barca fans wondering why Frank Rijkaard waited until the 82nd minute to bring the 17-year old Serbo-Catalan into the match. The victory gives Real 67 wins versus their arch-rivals' 58 in the teams' historical head-to-head tally.Espanyol won the day's "other" Madrid-Barcelona match-up, topping Atletico Madrid 2-1 on an 86th minute goal by Luis Garcia. Milan, Inter, Real, Barca or Porto for Arsenal
Arsenal finished as runners-up of their Champions League group despite beating Steaua Bucharest last night. Arsene Wenger’s side accounted for the Romanian champions 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium but finished second after Sevilla’s late surge saw them steal the points away to Slavia Prague to guarantee the Spanish side top spot. Arsenal went one up through Abou Diaby’s 8th-minute strike and took a commanding lead into the break when Nicklas Bendtner struck again just before half-time. Steaua Bucharest did pull one back through substitute Dorel Zaharia’s fine header but it was too little, too late as Arsenal held out for their fourth win of the Champions League group stages. There’s not much point going into the performance too much as this was effectively a dead rubber, but in my eyes there were two major positives to come out of the game. The first was the welcome return of both Robin van Persie and goalscorer Diaby to the starting lineup and the secon

Inter, Roma, Barca, Seville Join English Teams In Champs League Round Of 16
Solid performances by Inter Milan, AS Roma, Barcelona and Sevilla saw the four teams through to the round of 16 on the penultimate match day of UEFA Champions League group play. Meanwhile, Rangers blew a chance to clinch passage to the next round by losing at Stuttgart, who had absolutely nothing but their pride to play for. Walter Smith's side now host Lyon in a winner-take-all game at Ibrox Dec. 12. The good news for Rangers fans is they will advance if the game ends in a tie, by virtue holding the tie-breaker after beating Lyon in their first meeting.Today's Barca-Lyon game was a good one, as expected. I was able to watch follow all most parts of it on the Internet and thought Lyon had a lot of fight and put on a solid showing. Juninho and goalkeeper Rémy Vercoutre impressed me in the little that I saw of the game (I didn't catch any of the goals). Lyon came back from goals down twice and it felt like the tie was a fair result.I don't know what happened to Rangers other than wh

Soccer Source Saturday Summary: Bayern, Barca Beaten, Battered
The sixth and seventh-ranked teams in Soccer Source's Top 25 both lost today, as #7 Bayern Munich finally fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and #6 Barcelona went down again on the road. The Bavarian side got clobbered at VfB Stuttgart, losing 3-1 in a game that was decided at halftime. Mario Gomez completed a brace at minute 42 to put the defending Bundesliga champs up 3-0. It was an impressive victory for Stuttgart, who have quietly charged up to eighth place in the Bundesliga. Bayern's lead is now a single point, after Werder Bremen shellacked Karlsruhe (it's pronounced Karls-rooh) 4-0. Hamburg and Schalke tied 1-1 in the other top game of the day.Barca, ranked sixth in the top 25, also played a disappointing game at Getafe and went down 2-0. The Catalan side have not won a Liga game on the road since Sept. 29, and that was to sorry Levante, who are so terrible they're probably even worse than Derby County. It's early still, but Barca does not scare me right now. There was one

Barca Blows Another, Squanders Points At Valladolid
Sad, sorry, 19th-placed Valladolid managed to split points with mighty Barcelona in the lone Thursday game featuring one of this week's top 25 squads. The home side went up after 17 minutes but Jar Jar equalized for the Catalans three minutes before half time. What can I tell you about Valladolid? Besides the fact that they suck? How bad do they suck, anyway? They're 19th out of 20 teams in the Spanish top flight and have won only one game (out of 10 played) this season. The lone victory game on opening day--Aug. 26--at Espanyol, so that makes it nine straight games without a victory. In the last six games, they have garnered two points. As for the makeup of the team, as far as I can tell only one of their starters from today has been capped: Daniel Ngom Kome, who played for Cameroon at the 2002 World Cup and 2004 Africa Nations Cup. He's been a Spanish citizen since 1999 though. Maybe that's why he has three names. The only name I recognized was Bartholomew Ogbeche who played for

Barca Won't Overpay For Arsenal's Fabregas
Barcelona director of football Txiki Begiristain has stated that the Catalan giants won't break the bank for Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas. The Spanish sensation has been one of the most influential players at Arsenal over the past few seasons, marshaling the midfield at the tender age of 20. Fabregas had never kept it a secret that he would like to return to Spain at some time in his career, but it now seems as though he may have to wait seven years for his contract to expire."He is a great player but the circumstances of his exit make things very difficult," said. "We cannot pay a great amount for a homegrown player that decided to leave us.”Arsene Wenger's club only paid Barcelona £700,000 of compensation for the young midfielder , as he left Barcelona at 16 years of age, before players are allowed to become professionals in Spain.Barcelona have made it clear that they will not chase after the coveted Arsenal star, with Begiristain adding:"To start with he wo
