Baptism at the Taiwanese-Chinese Christian Community in Jerusalem
No, not mine. I’m not a Christian so I’ve never been to a baptism ceremony before, as odd as that may be as someone who lives in the religious center of Christianity - Jerusalem. Through a Taiwanese friend who studies here I visited the Chinese-Taiwanese Christian community again this last Friday to try and [...]

Priest Suffers Breakdown During Baptism, Tries to Drown Baby
There were some tense moments at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Slope Oak Wednesday morning when, during a baptism ceremony, the Assistant Pastor, Father Axel Manheart, snatched the baby from its godmother and attempted to drown it in the baptismal font. The baby's mama, 17-year old Audrey Sweeney, knew in an instant that something was terribly, terribly amiss."We knew something was wrong rig

      My Baptism
The Bible tells us that at the age of twelve (Luke 2:41-50) Jesus taught in the temple. The Baptist church my family attended believed that not until the age of twelve would a child be mature enough to understand the meaning of the Bible scriptures, Baptism and to attend church services instead of Sunday School after my Baptism. Therefore, Baptisms were performed by the minister for the 6th grade Sunday class each year. Everyone in my 6th grade Sunday school class was twelve years old that spring, except for me. I was only eleven years old. My mother had to fight the minister and the deacons of the church in order for me to be allowed to be Baptized at the age of eleven with the rest of my class. I was questioned separately by the minister behind huge, closed, mahogany doors. Yet I was not

Another day, another church...and infant baptism
The nature of my occupation requires me to frequent different churches on a regular basis. Quite regularly I wake up early on Sunday wishing I could sleep in or relax comfortably in the pew of the church I call home. Regardless of my attitude any given Sunday, these experiences leave me delighted and dismayed at the diversity in the church, and have consistently forced me to reconsider the my own theological leanings, balancing both Scripture and tradition, which are nearly and neatly inseparable. This morning's occupational adventure brought me to Church of the Cross United Methodist Church. It was small, but nice with a mix of traditional and modern elements in the design. The worship service was a consonant treat as the organ belted out ancient hymn after hymn filled with words that

      Baptism by Beer? Not Quite
Salisbury Cathedral is one of Europe's most impressive churches and is celebrating its 750th anniversary this year. I can still remember being double awestruck as a college student in England on the day that I visited both the cathedral and Stonehenge within a couple of hours. I recall being able to locate a traditional pub for a pint of bitter that afternoon to consider the determination and engineerings skills of both the ancient pagans and Christians that erected these amazing monuments just a few miles apart centuries ago.Now comes word from Salisbury that Wadworth Brewery came to the rescue for Easter Sunday to help the church overcome an issue created by an archaeological dig at the cathedral. The cathedral's font, used for Baptisms could not be used during the work, so the Archdeaco

      A baptism...
This morning I went to a baptism.I grew up Catholic, but I hadn't been to a mass in years. As I sat there, mildly terrified of the looming audience participation (the part I always loathed in any mass), my mind wandered back to the seemingly endless Sundays I sat in the pews at St. Augustin's Church in lovely Des Moines, Iowa... and I reflected on my family church going coping mechanisms... which, embarrassingly, often focused on the boy-crush of the moment. However...my childhood meditation was interrupted by the stirring BIG DRAMA on the other side of the church. There was a man standing in the doorway. The sun was at his back, and he was illuminated by the sun -- he looked like Jesus. Well, at least the depiction of Jesus on black velvet air brushed paintings. And I should know what Je

Here's the account leading up to my son's baptism, as posted on the former ChristianForums.com on June 20, 2006. In the three years leading up to this Saturday's baptism, David had confessed to me that he wasn't sure he even believed in God because he liked "science", didn't understand who the Lord was ("is God the Lord, or is Jesus the Lord?"), didn't believe in miracles, and if he did go to

      Baptism Ceremony 101
Christians have many rites that mark certain stages or transition in their lives. One of these rites is baptism when water is put on the forehead of the baby to symbolize the baby has joined the Church or becoming a Christian. Parents are free to choose whether they want to hold a grand celebration out of it, or just throwing a simple reception. In early times, baptism has to take place in moving water to symbolize the movement of the Holy Spirit in human life. Nowadays, baptism ceremony normally take place in the church with a priest leading the ritual.Whether you are hosting the party or being a guest, you must know a thing or two about gifts-giving. As a host, you may wish to prepare thank-you gifts for all your guests. The gift does not necessarily have to be big and expensive; a small thoughtful present is equally appreciated too. As a guest, you may pick gift items that have religious connotations, in line with the baptism theme. Like baby showers, the host and guests must know t

      Woodward: Baptism and Temptation
We are a long way today, both historically and intellectually, from the Christological disputes that shaped the first three centuries of the Church. The question of how a single person can be both God and man doesn't bewilder us as it did the earliest generations of Christians. It is unlikely nowadays to inspire anything like the turmoil and violence that marked the Catholic-Arian conflict and made necessary the Council – and the Creed – of Nicea. But none of this modern tranquillity is evidence that we are more theologically sophisticated than our Christian ancestors of the third and fourth centuries. It's simply that we don't think about the matter any more. We stand up on Sundays and mutter something about God the Son being born of the Virgin Mary and becoming man and we let it go at that. We are disinclined to spend much time speculating about what a human being who is also God would actually think and feel and do.Occasionally, though, a Gospel passage (if we stop and ponder

Vehige: The Baptism of Jesus and Taking the Gospels Seriously
The baptism of Jesus, as Pope Benedict notes in Jesus of Nazareth, is difficult to understand. If Jesus is without sin, why did he need to be baptized? If he is truly the Son of God, then what is the significance of the heavens opening, the voice of the Father, and the descent of the Holy Spirit? These are the two primary questions, but they are difficult and challenging. The Pope answers them, so I won't belabor the point. What I want to highlight, however, is how the Pope closes the chapter. He notes that so-called "liberal scholarship" (which should not be confused with liberal politics) has tried to interpret Christ's baptism as a personal revelation, a personal epiphany, on the part of Jesus. Simply, that through his baptism, he had a spiritual awakening, understood his special relationship with God, understood his vocation, and at that moment set out upon fulfilling his task.As the saying goes, there are no new heresies. The early Church endured a similar notion -- adopti

      Bunny, Bits, Baptism
I found a dress (Ann Taylor on sale, it's here, but apparently not for sale anymore), I found a shoe (Antonio Melani, the black "Cara") that didn't hurt the broken toe. Christening gown.We got home, got dressed, and raced back out to the church. I love Easter Vigil. It's possibly one of my favorite times to go to church. It beats Easter, hands down. The church starts dark, there are candles, bells, the return of the Alleluias, from dark to light, from plainsong to organ, and when you leave, it's Easter! The baptism was lovely. D did it and only fussed a little about having to stand around. Her hair is full of chrism and smells amazing.G and M went all over town and made the Easter Bunny thing happen. Christening and Baptism Favor Ideas
Christening and Baptism Favor Ideas by Criss Baptism and christening ceremonies are an important event that signifies the start of a child's spiritual life. As a common courtesy to guests who attend these ceremonies, the parents of the child or the host of the event often obtain party favors as a gift. Here are some themes and ideas that are appropriate for these occasions: 1. Cross - The holy cross is by far the most common theme for baptism and christening favors. There are many interpretations of the meaning of the cross. However, the cross is widely accepted as the sign of Christianity. Some favors with this theme are cross- shaped soap, candles engraved with the cross symbol, and chocolate bars with a cross on the customized wrapper. 2. White - The color white symbolizes life, joy, happiness, and purity. Yellow is another color that is often used as it can also symbolize goodness, happiness, and brightness. Sometime these colors are used together, for example, a white angel with

      Baptism
IMG_3983a Photo by openg. Alleke will be baptized on Sunday.April and I hadn't talked much about what baptism meant to us as a family until Friday when we were in the car on the way to church to talk to the pastor. We only had a few minutes to talk, but that's all we needed. (I think most new parents learn how to get to the point. It's a survival skill.) I discovered why I wanted to have Alleke baptized. I think it's important to tell other people what you intend to do and to ask them to help you do it. In the church where Alleke will be baptized, and the church where I was baptized myself, this means you get up in front of everyone holding your baby, and the pastor reads from a book and asks you questions, and in the end, you make a promise before God and a bunch of smiling people that know you very well, that you will be your baby's mom and dad. Then the pastor reminds you that God loves your child very much, and that God has given your child a gift, the church, w
