This was a part of the city controlled by the French from the 1850’s until 1940’s, when the French and other foreigners cleared out of Shanghai. We walked through a wide alleyway surrounded by older apartment buildings into a walled garden, gently lit by lanterns. ANGKLUNG: A Bamboo Beat
Traditionally, Sundanese dance and music have grown alongside the strata of a strictly hierarchical society. Dances such as the ketak tilu and provocative jaipongan were for the entertainment of the masses, whereas the more refined song poetry (tembang Sunda) and certain forms of gamelan were the preserve of the aristocracy. These days the differences are fading as art forms follow social trends and feudal systems gradually disappear. Far from being diminished, however, Sundanese performing arts are flourishing, enhanced by an ever widening circle of influences.Whilst the differing forms of gamelan music may sound rather similar to the inexperienced ear, Sundanese music is usually distinguishable from its Javanese and Balinese cousins by the presence of a clear melody in the foreground. Gamelan degung, traditionally played for the aristocracy, is led by the haunting tones of the suling, a bamboo flute

      Bamboo Blade - 7
After challenging Tamaki, Ishibashi and Ishida compare puny biceps in order to prove to each other their strength. Ishibashi has seen something in Tamaki that he realizes as greatness. If only he had that strength back in high school when we was fighting Ishida. Anyway, Ishibashi wants to prove to himself that he is still strong, and that he can beat a puny freshman girl. Well that idea goes down the shitter as he is bombarded with strike after strike while pressing a heavy attack, which leaves Tamaki unfazed. Tamaki does some never seen before one-handed strikes, throwing Ishibashi off-guard. This causes Ishibashi to actually become serious, and he moves to the ascension stance. Everyone else assumes that this means the end for Tamaki, as that stance is supposedly extremely strong. However, that stance causes Tamaki to go into a flashback about her mother using the same stance, and Tamaki spaces out. Ishibashi notices this, and then decides to call the match off (poor Ishida and hi

      Bamboo Blade 5
Sayako, the habitual line-stepper. I’ll admit that Bamboo Blade took a few episodes to get going. At first, I wasn’t sure if it was going to very good. Of course, a show about Kendo had the potential to be interesting. Additionally, mediocre reviews of the manga and a slow moving start made me wary. However, with the addition of newer characters, such as Sayako, and as we learn more about the personalities of the existing characters, Miya for example, the show becomes much more interesting. And of course, there is Tamaki’s great sense of justice brought on by the most amazing show ever, Blade Braver. As such, I think that this is this is the best episode yet. The episode starts with Sayako wanting to spar with Tamaki, which turns out to be a great blow to her confidence, as well as her head See above figure. As it turns out, the club is going to be having a practice match with Kenzo’s team today, so they are all waiting in anticipation. Another gangster face cou

Kill Or Cure - Can You Eat Bamboo Shoots?
Kill Or Cure - Can You Eat Bamboo Shoots?"Can bamboo shoots really be eaten?" my 7 year old child asks,"Yes" I tentantively reply, but my knowledge is poor, so I research. Bamboo shoots can be eaten from certain bamboos, I learn that Bamboo shoots must be peeled and cooked before using. It is important to note that bamboo shoots must not be eaten raw.The first stage after peelins is to trim the roots, peel the outer leaves (sheath leaves), and remove any tough flesh - the young tender leaves can be left attached. The shoots should be cut across the grain into one-eighth inch slices. The bamboo shoots should then be cooked in boiling water in an uncovered pan for 20 minutes, it is important to leave the pan uncovered as this allows the compounds within the bamboo shoots, that cause the bitter taste to dissipate into the air. If there is any bitter taste to the shoots after cooking, boil them in fresh water for 5 more minutes. Bamboo shoots can also be microwaved, in an uncovered shallow p
