Itchy Packages and Other Ballpark Tales
Genital matters have come to the forefront in the barracks at Cooperstown. The coaches realized that they had more than baseball to deal with yesterday when several players complained that they were itchy underneath their baseball pants. It’s no wonder; they wear sliding shorts and play in the hot sun, then head to the [...]

Interview with "Working at the Ballpark" Author Tom Jones
      1. How did your idea to do this book come about? While in graduate school at the University of Arizona, I took a class in 1974 called “Sociology of Work.” The professor assigned readings from Studs Terkel’s oral history book Working. I expected the book to merely be another assignment, but I was immediately moved by the powerful voices of Terkel’s interviewees. Each person, regardless of th

      Ballpark Pens
With most old stadiums either being redone or knocked down to make a place for a brand spanking new multi-million dollar stadium, these Ballpark pens are a great way to get your hands on a small bit of history. Barrels and disc at top are made from wooden seats from historic stadiums. Pens ship with capless rollerball refill but can also use Parker style ballpoints. The pens are laser engraved with the name of the ballpark and years in existence. Top, clip and nose all rhodium plated. No two pens are exactly the same due to age, type of wood and the direction of the wood grain. Prices vary depending on stadium due to collector's prices for seats. Right now you have six different stadiums to choose from and the prices depend on which one you choose, with the most expensive being $250 for

Minnesota Twins Have Purchased Domain Names; New Ballpark Still Nameless
With some digging by the blogosphere and FOX 9, it seems the Twins have registered a slew of web site domain names for their new home. Nobody is at liberty to discuss which corporation has the inside track to becoming the name attached to the ballpark set to open in 2010, but the speculation is rampant due to the revealed domain purchases. In February, a blogger found that landolakespark.com and landolakesfield.com were owned by the Twins. Could Land O' Lakes be stepping up to the plate?FOX 9 has also found the Twins registered four versions of Great River Energy -- a north metro energy provider. Including the Land O' Lakes and Great River Energy names, FOX 9 found 48 domain names registered to the Twins.I must admit, I wouldn't mind the buttery goodness of Land O' Lakes Park. We can't fig

Last evening's tilt between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves had so much good old American baseball flavor that it might as well have been played in Japan. (what? I dunno). Instead, those of us in North America saw the official; unofficial opening night of the 2008 baseball season which took place in our nation's capitol. The fans of D.C. have been brimming with gaiety over the regular season unveiling of their team's new home -- Nationals Park. The time was finally upon them and the young building did not disappoint, as the evening was filled with red, white and blue spirit from start to finish. Iconic DC Eatery Possibly Taking Menu to New Ballpark
For those folks in the Washington, D.C. area there is some exciting news for your innards in the works. Local establishment, Ben's Chili Bowl, is in talks right now with the Washington Nationals for a possible spot among food vendors at the Nats' new park. Nothing has been officially determined, but according to Ben's co-owner -- Kamal Ali -- there seems to be a very good chance for an agreement as the discussion progresses."We've got a brand new stadium, and we want to give the people what they want so that it's a win-win situation. Right now we're just trying to move the conversation along until it's a done deal."What this deal would mean is that Ben's Chili Bowl will have an outpost at the ballpark featuring almost the exact same menu as the one featured at their landmark location on U Street. Locals will then be able to enjoy some of the eatery's most famous items at the game including half-smokes, chili dogs and burgers. For you out-of-towners (myself included), I have do

A Bone-Chilling Ballpark Book in Time for All Hallows Eve
The month of October represents many things to many people. But to someone like myself, October can only mean two things: Playoff baseball and the living dead. That's right. And I am happy to pass along that a recent project has married exactly those two passions of mine in a book that explores unexplained hauntings on the grounds of Major League ballparks. Haunted Baseball: Ghosts, Curses, Legends, and Eerie Events is a book researched and written by Michael Bradley and Dan Gordon in which legends and ghost stories are brought out for all to examine and scrutinize. The tales were provided by several sources including stadium personnel, players and Ted Williams' cryogenically-frozen head. (okay, I might be making that last part up).Along the way, hundreds of MLB players (including Jim Thome, Derek Jeter, Jason Varitek, Alex Rodriguez, Omar Vizquel, Chipper Jones, Jay Gibbons, Mike Piazza, Michael Young, Derek Lee, Paul Konerko, David Wright and many others) share their perspectives a

The Jaunt presents some of the best tailgating recipes from around the web or from good old-fashioned cook books. Each month we will post a new recipe that we probably aren't talented enough to cook up ourselves. The featured concoction this month is similar to the fare served at Coors Field; home to the white-hot Colorado Rockies. "When making Ballpark Sausages, I add a secret ingredient — fresh fennel — to my sautéed veggies when it’s available. This aromatic plant has pale green, celery-like stems and bright green, feathery foliage. It has a broad, bulbous base that is treated like a vegetable. Fennel is often mislabeled “sweet anise.” The flavor of fennel, however, is sweeter and more delicate than anise and, when cooked, becomes even lighter and more elusive than when it is raw."Ballpark SausagesFrom the kitchen of Carol Ann Kates, author of “Secret Recipes from the Corner Market”Serves 6This is a fun, creative way to serve your favorite sausage. Ballpark Reviews For The Elderly
89-year-old Washington resident, George Schneider, accompanied his son on a 26-ballpark trip this season to complete their goal of attending all 30 major league venues. The goal was simple enough...visit the remaining parks they have not yet experienced, and ingest at least one hot dog and beer from each. Mission fulfilled. However, don't ask George for any type of ballpark reviews because it's all pretty much the same shit to him."They all taste the same, and the beer ain't much different either," George said of ballpark fare. The ballpark seats all had about the same level of comfort, and the bathrooms were all about the same. "The one [bathroom] in Florida [Tampa Bay], that was a bad one," George said.So there ya have it. A lifelong baseball fan finally takes the opportunity to sample the sites of America's Pastime and all it did was pretty much confirm what he had already believed to be true. His hometown Safeco Field is the best there is and Tampa's Tropicana Field blows."It'

Nats Players and Media 'Discover' Ballpark in the Works
A select few Washington Nationals players got to take a tour of their new home, set to open its gates next season. The players were in awe as they walked into their new clubhouse area. It's still just concrete and metal, but even in the early stage one thing was obvious. "It's a little bigger than RFK," Shawn Hill said with a laugh. The new clubhouse will have an oval shape and feature plenty of room for the players. "I like the shape of it, the oval," Ryan Langerhans said. "It looks like there's going to be a ton of other accessories, too. A hydrotherapy area, bigger weight room, things like that. It's pretty impressive."Also on hand was Danny Forster who hosts the show "Build It Bigger" on the Discovery Channel. Forster has been gathering information for an episode that is slated to air in September about the Nationals ballpark."As far as baseball parks are concerned, this is going to be one of the fastest built, ever," Forster said. The Worst: Discuss Amongst Yourselves - The Great American Ballpark Is Neither Great Nor, In Actuality, A Ballpark
Hello, friends. This is Ted back again with more of this weekend's poorly constructed "Weekend Special," whereby we discuss baseball teams that are already wholly irrelevant in some context. Right now: Cincinnati, the opponent this weekend of our first entry, the Rangers. However, we're changing the format. Rather than listing former players - Jose Rijo! - we're going personal essay style. Cincinnati has an odd place in my heart for a place I've never been, and God willing I'll never go. I saw Traffic, which paints Cincinnati in about as negative a light as one film can paint a city, and the movie influenced me so much that a few days after seeing it, when I happened to be getting arrested for underage purchase of alcohol, I screamed at the job, "Don't bust me! I'll just do it again! Bust the store! This is a supply side issue! Didn't you see Traffic?" The police claim that the reason I was in jail until a little south of 5am was because of unpaid parking tickets in my home sta

"After our first year vending, we realized that a lot of these beer vendors have very interesting stories to tell. Wethought it'd be neat if a fan could see what some of the more well-known vendors do, what they like and even their name."One of the more peculiar characters is one Marvin "Leroy Boy" Mitofsky. Twins Ballpark in 2010?
2010 here we come.... or mabye not. In a move that was somewhat unexpected, Hennepin county announced it's concerns over whether they would be able to work with the owners of the proposed Rapid Park location.  Last year when the Legislature passed a bill that will fund the ballpark it was dependant on two things:1.  The ballpark would be in it's current location - The Rapid Park lot behind the Target Center.2.   The bill also stated that the county could not spend more than $90 million for accruing the land and to pay for public infrastructures (roads, sidewalks, etc).Currently the limited liability corporate group that owns that parcel of land wants several million dollars more than Hennepin County is allowed to pay.  Earlier this year a judge ruled that the land was work around $13.5 million dollars.  The owners of the land think that is well below market value. The Twins and Hennepin County are now put in a tight situation.  They can either condem
