This was obviously not part of my "going light" plan, but Martha's Country Bakery Martha's Country Bakery was so inviting. The space is well-lit in a warm way, with a long counter in front, and a seating area in the back. Every single dessert was beautiful and I really wanted everything. We talked to a few people behind the counter, which gave an average service experience, and narrowed down our choices. Surprisingly, they do not sell breads, but plan to in the near future, so we chose one pastry and five cupcakes and headed home.We ate this nicely shaped pastry (don't know the name) on the train and while it was fresh and flaky, and lightly sweetened, it was missing something. The Bakery next door
Maltese cooking is a conglomeration of traditional recipes handed down, combined with the influences left behind of the many foreign dominations, as well as a nod to its neighbors, Sicily and North Africa. Since there has always been a lack of firewood on the island, the people of Malta long ago developed a slow-method of cooking. Food was placed in earthenware dishes over a little portable stone stove which they would sit by, constantly fanning and feeding bits of thistle and brushwood. Although gas ovens are now available, this slow simmer method is still preferred resulting in the tender falling-off-the-bone meat with deeply infused flavors. Another charming holdover from long ago can be seen on Sunday mornings. Housewives line up at the local bakery holding a large linen-covered cas

I’ve been out this morning looking at a few new Marietta real estate developments (more on that in the next few posts) and finally stopped in at Canvas Cafe & Bakery. I’ve been driving by for the past few months since it opened, but now, with a little bit of computer work to do (yeah, free WiFi) and hunger getting the best of me, it seemed like a perfect time to try the place out. I was very impressed with my lunch and great coffee. Did I mention free WiFi yet? This will be a new scheduled stop for me when I need to grab some coffee, food and check FMLS. Canvas is located at 724 Cherokee Street in the medical district of Marietta very close to Marietta Square. Technorati Tags: Marietta real estate, Canvas Cafe & Bakery

We woke up on our second day in Sydney, and it was gloomy and rainy. We decided to brave weather head on, and went for a morning jog in Hyde Park. It was a nice park as far as parks go. No magical elves handing out cheeseburgers and cupcakes or anything like that. But it did have a nice Anzac memorial, and it seemed to be in the center of a lot of hustle and bustle, and I loved it. It reminded me of home in Chicago. Read more! »

Reporter Killed for Investigative Reporting He was Doing on a Muslim Bakery
Chauncey Bailey was shot and killed by Devaughdre Broussard, who confessed and called himself a good soldier. So what was Devaughdre Broussard so mad about that he decided to kill Bailey? Bailey was doing some investigative reporting into an establishment called the Black Muslim Bakery. So this Muslim decided he needed to use violence against someone who might have found something that wasn’t on the level. He was taken into custody Friday along with six other people in an early morning police raid on the bakery and affiliated buildings as a result of a two-month police investigation. Broussard had been staying at one of the raided houses on 59th Street, its rear yard connecting to the bakery property. At the house, police recovered the shotgun they believe was used to kill Bailey, the 57-year-old editor of the Oakland Postnewspaper. One of those arrested in the raid was Yusuf Bey IV, son of the bakery’s founder, the late Black Muslim leader Yusuf Bey. Bey IV was booked S

Boycott Islam: Police surround Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland
Just read this over at Jihad Watch and obviously I’ve just updated my Boycott Islam - Companies and Products List: Oakland and Fremont police have surrounded the Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland. Television stations KPIX and KTVU report that S.W.A.T team negotiators and various high-ranking police officials are at the scene…. The late Yusuf Bey was the founder of Your Black Muslim Bakery, famed for its bean and carrot pies and known as having an open door to struggling families. Bey’s reputation took a hit in later years as he defended himself against rape allegations in Alameda County. Most of those charges were later dropped, and one was pending when he died. More recently, Bey’s son and some other young men were identified as the young toughs who bashed liquor bottles in Oakland corner stores and berated the owners for selling alcohol in the community. Also, longtime Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey was reportedly researching an investigative pie

We got something from the bakery instead.
Tired, hungry and craving sugar, two sisters stand in a foreign Walmart’s cookie aisle eyeballing the options. Noticing movement to their left, the pair turns and stands open-mouthed as they gaze in horror upon another shopper. Dressed in a white shirt and white pants pushing her cart full of goodies, the woman is covered in blood and what can only be described later as “bits”. The front of her shirt, the tips of her short sleeves, and her pant legs from ankles to knees splattered with the remains of something or someone. Behind her, another woman, sloppily dressed but otherwise clean, appears to be missing an arm. Editing to explain. I’ve gotten a couple of “???” and “!!!” and some “?!?!?” regarding this little tidbit. I realize now that it doesn’t “fit” with my usual blog stuff and might be a little disturbing. I've had many but my most recent one has actually has been going on for some time and reminds me of the Soup Nazi episode. It's the one where the Soup Nazi would yell, "No soup for you!" if his customers did not follow his soup ordering instructions. My Soup Nazi works in the bakery at my grocery store. She has worked there for years and watches me with my kids to be sure we don't break her rules such as making sure I don't let them stand on the shelf to get their own donut or not using the paper to get our treats out of the case. Most of the time I can just ignore her but there was a time she made me angry. I left my cart in the bakery while I took my toddler to the restroom. We were gone less than ten minutes and when we came back our cart was gone. I asked the Bakery Nazi if she knew what had happened to my cart. She claimed that she thought it had been abandoned so she took it up to the service desk. Oh p
