      'Disneyland' Comes to Baghdad
Baghdad at night. I hope those aren't bombs falling at the top of this Disneyland-esque illustration. If I didn't know any better I'd think the idea of an amusement park built over 50 acres in Baghdad is a film treatment from David Lynch. But no. Alas, this lunacy is the brainchild of Llewellyn Werner who appears to possess the same self-awareness as, well, as George Bush. Werner secured a 50-year lease on prime real estate in Baghdad near the Green Zone to build an amusement and skateboard park. Perhaps by near the end of the lease contract Iraq will be ready for an amusement park, but it seems a bit premature to consider an entertainment park when the Green Zone remains under siege. Yesterday two US soldiers and 37 civilians were killed in attacks in and around the Green Zone. But, hey, w

Gen. Petraeus’ Charts: Sectarian Cleansing in Baghdad Has Been Key To Violence Drop
In his opening statement to today’s Senate Hearing, General Petraeus used a series of interesting charts to illustrate his view of the current status of Iraq in terms of violence and stability. I highly recommend that people read Petreaus’ full statement (as well as that of Carl Levin) and examine the charts. You can see them here(Note: pdf file). Slide #3 Is especially interesting as it illustrates the decline in ethno-sectarian violence in Baghdad From December 2006, April 2007, to September 2007 up to March 2008 as you can see. As the yellow-to-red spots indicate where attacks have taken place and the intensity, it is clear that violence has dropped dramatically in Baghdad in the year-and-a-quarter that this series covers. But what it also tells us is that part of the r

Many of the walking items in the news deal with terrible things that happen to individuals who are just out for a stroll and minding their own business. Bad things happen to good people walking home, going to work, and also to nice people trying to find meaning in life by sauntering near the railroad tracks. It's a disgrace.I feel like our civil rights and liberties as walkers is constantly under attack. Maybe, one day, I will take up this issue in a public forum, and eventually, someone will notice my hard-working efforts on behalf on walkers. Maybe this advocacy will set a course toward the governor's office in Texas, my ultimate career goal.On the other hand, walking news is sometimes full of hope.

"It's hard to believe," says a friend named Fareed, who has also gone and come back over the years to find the situation always worse, "but this time it's really not." Such words are uttered only grudgingly by those such as me, who have been disappointed again and again by Iraq, where a pessimist is merely someone who has had to endure too many optimists. It doesn't help that no sooner have I written these words than my cup of coffee spills as a massive explosion shakes our building-the first blast near our place in weeks, and the more shocking for that. Between April 2003 and June 2004, $12 billion in U.S. currency—much of it belonging to the Iraqi people—was shipped from the Federal Reserve to Baghdad, where it was dispensed by the Coalition Provisional Authority. Some of the cash went to pay for projects and keep ministries afloat, but, incredibly, at least $9 billion has gone missing, unaccounted for, in a frenzy of mismanagement and greed. Following a trail that leads from a safe in one of Saddam’s palaces to a house near San Diego, to a P.O. box in the Bahamas, the authors discover just how little anyone cared about how the money was handled. IRAQ: Baghdad is trying to reassert central control of reserves run by Kurdish authorities
The struggle for Iraq's oil flares up as Kurds open doors to foreign investors. At the end of a rough dirt track, on a sun-baked hillock once the domain of scorpions and snakes, squats an odd settlement of caravans, generators and drilling rigs that is at the heart of the battle for Iraq's oil."Welcome to Texas, Kurdistan," said Karim Ali, as his taxi bounced to the gates of the Taq Taq oilfields, on the undulating plains of Koi Sanjaq, some 80 miles south-east of Irbil. "Soon we'll all have big hats and cigars like them," he said, nodding at a group of oil workers passing by on a pickup truck.Like many Iraqis, Karim appeared convinced that the country's vast reserves of crude, the bedrock of its economy, were about to be siphoned off by major US oil corporations. The presence of "foreigners" here at Taq Taq merely cemented his certainty. With the Bush administration pressing the Iraqi government to pass a new hydrocarbons law, there are widely voiced assumptions that it will bulldoz

This is by Bill Roggio at The Fourth Rail. A more concise, accurate and up to date source of news on the war in Iraq you will not find. ~RJHFourth Rail article link Half of Baghdad SecuredUnderstanding the numbers behind the Baghdad Security OperationOn June 4, The New York Times released partial data from a classified memo which stated only 29 percent of Baghdad was secured, and provided little context to the status of the remaining 71 percent of Baghdad. The article was widely interpreted as heralding the failure of the Baghdad Security Plan, as four months into the operation, less than one third of Baghdad was secured. The New York Times also claimed that senior U.S. generals leaders stated Baghdad was expected to be secured by July, while General David Petraeus told this was never a realistic goal. As we noted at the time, the status of contest neighborhoods was important to understanding the state of Baghdad and the progress of the Baghdad Security Operation. On June 29, Major Gene

      Sectarian Murders Down in Baghdad
Sectarian murders and executions in Baghdad are declining, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq said today on the "Fox News Sunday" television program. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus told host Chris Wallace via satellite link from Baghdad that the U.S. troop surge has helped reduce sectarian murders and executions in Baghdad by one-third between January and April. And despite an uptick in violence in May, the levels of violence are again going down. "The fact is, as we go on the offensive, the enemy is going to respond," Petraeus said. Last week Petraeus received his full compliment of additional troops. He said surge operations are now truly just beginning, and he characterized what has been done thus far as "shaping operations." The general said the additional troops give him the combat power to launch operations in al Qaeda sanctuaries where there has been little permanent coalition force presence in the past. Petraeus said about 30 percent of Baghdad is a major concern, because these

Fr. Hani Abdel Ahad kidnapped in Baghdad

HANI ABDEL AHAD and four young men from his church were kidnapped on June 6 while travelling from his Divine Wisdom parish to the city´s minor seminary, both in northeastern Baghdad´s Suleikh neighbourhood. Fr. Ahad, the seventh Chaldean priest known to have been kidnapped within the past year, was working in a northeastern, majority-Sunni neighbourhood that has seen relatively little direct targeting of Christians. Iraqi Army Kills Al-Qaeda Leader in Baghdad
Iraqi soldiers have killed a senior Al-Qaeda leader in a clash inside one of Baghdad's historic Sunni quarters, military spokesman Brigadier General Qassim Atta said Monday. "He was from Al-Qaeda, they called him the 'Governor of Adhamiyah'," Atta told AFP. "He was killed during clashes with the 11th Division's first brigade this morning, and 11 of his aides were arrested." Adhamiyah is a Sunni enclave in north Baghdad, a cluster of streets around an historic mosque surrounded by a US-built concrete security barriers and hostile Shiite districts roamed by militia fighters. Atta said the alleged Al-Qaeda chieftain was an Iraqi citizen known as Abu Abdullah al-Adhab -- "Abu Abdullah with the crippled arm." Abdullah's death is the second reported killing of an Al-Qaeda street captain since last week, when nationalist insurgents in the Sunni suburb of Amiriyah violently turned against Al-Qaeda's Islamists.Talk Show America 6/5/2007

Insurgents Hit Bridge North Of Baghdad
So at this point the insurgents have 3 main targets:American soldiers. Iraqi citizensIraqi infrastructureThey try and kill as many of our troops as they can thinking we will pack up and leave. They are hoping for the Democrats to take control to see that happen. They kill Iraqi citizens at random but make it look like Sunni on Shia violence or vice versa.  They bomb and generally destroy as much infrastructure as they can to make life miserable for Iraqis who will of course blame America. What’s really unfortunate is we are allowing them to make the rules by which we fight. We won’t attack their mosques so they use them as weapons caches. Every mud hole town with a mosque is one of their “holy cities” and we wont fight there either. The Iraqi government hands over parts of the government machine to factions in order to build a coalition. As an example Muqtada al Sadr was given control of the countries hospital system so he used hospitals to house his fighters and ambulances to deli

Fourth Rail: The Baghdad Security Operation Order of Battle
Reports from Bill Roggio on Iraq. His blog Fourth Rail is a must read folks. It's one of my never miss daily reads. Back in 2003 as I watched our troops doing almost a blitzkrieg striking into the heart of Baghdad I wondered about all the cities bypassed. Even back then it seemed to me that if you wanted to hold an area it would take troops left in thsoe areas, not just a fast strike into Baghdad. But of course that has turned out to be Donald Rumsfeld's plan and theres really no sense in beating that dead horse. ~RJH Fourth Rail article link The Baghdad Security Operation Order of Battle: May 7, 2007By Bill Roggio, DJ Elliott and CJ RadinThe month of April was particularly hard on both U.S. and Iraqi security forces. As both forces push outward from larger, more secure bases, the casualties have increased. Iraqi security forces--both police and army--had over 300 KIA, while over 100 U.S. servicemen were killed in Iraq this past month. The numbers are likely to increase as the surg
