We said goodbye to Erika and Dick Tuesday morning and hit the road, headed for the Badlands in South Dakota. We passed dozens of corn fields and just as many sunflower fields before finally coming to the North Dakota / South Dakota border. Dakota insisted we stop for a picture. He liked sitting on top of the sign but seemed a little anxious when Charles headed for the car. He was only retrieving t
On Saturday we went to the opening of Berlin’s latest night club Badlands. Located in a sidestreet of Friedrichstraße in fancy Mitte I expected something along the lines of Picknick, and that’s pretty much what we got. Some more photos and impressions after the jump.

One of the best places to see the night sky is Badlands National Park. Not only are there no city lights to obscure the glow of the stars, but there aren’t any trees to narrow the visual range.
I remember sleeping outside in the Badlands as a youngster and seeing for the first time a satellite [...]

Viewers of ABC’s Good Morning America got an eyeful of stunning Badlands scenery with their coffee this morning. The ABC News morning show featured South Dakota’s Badlands as the fourth Wonder of America.

No. 179 - Badlands (Terrence Malick, 1973)'Name's Carruthers. Believe I shoot people every now and then. Not that I deserve a medal' - Kip Carruthers I have such a soft spot for 70's American Cinema, after all this is the cinema I was introduced to as an influential teenager by an earnest father, I feel as if I truly understand this era of film making more than any other period and it was with this eager anticipation that I turned to Badlands. All the defining motives and themes that I associate with this era are here; isolation, political and moral apathy, identity crisis, casual violence, what Malick brings to this period, I somehow I feel I can identify with, is that sense of 'this is life' narrative, where no action is berated or celebrated. Kip kills, Holly narrates whimsically, peop
Jijiga, Eastern Ethiopia - The road from Harar runs for more than 600 miles east towards the border with Somalia, penetrating deep into the desiccated badlands of the Ogaden desert, the dusty heart of Ethiopia's war-torn Somali regional state.Sparse scrub and thorn bush, brown termite mounds, and flocks of bony sheep edge up against the burning asphalt strip. Wandering camels are a hazard to traffic; but vehicles are few. Like the occasional herdsman, standing outside transportable mudul huts, they stare in mild surprise as white UN Land Cruisers race by.The road's destination is Gode, via the regional capital of Jijiga, and the towns of Kebri Beyah, Degehabur and Kebri Dehar. But the part-finished two-lane road also blazes a figurative path, unwelcome to some, into the isolated and disput

Dubbed The Badlands Guardian by locals, this geological marvel (Google Earth coordinates 50.010083,-110.113006) in Alberta, Canada, bears an uncanny resemblance to a human head wearing a full Native American headdress--and earphones, to boot. Of course, The Guardian was produced naturally. Thanks to PC World for this article. Ron at Hell's Half Acre, Wyoming, a true badlands where death is just a part of history. (Photo by Mary Vandeventer)My second tour in Wyoming with FALL has taken me into the hinterlands of a hinterland state. Before it's done, we'll drive 1,400 miles in 9 days, with 11 book events. Just halfway through, it's already been more churn than homecoming, with a few personal visits interspersed with a lot of book business. The moments of relaxation have been few, but so far so have the obstacles (the usual stuff ... one bookstore that goofed on the date in its ads, and another that didn't get its books until less than 24 hours before I arrived.)When I debuted my new book FALL last December in Wyoming, it was a sort of soft launch a month ahead of its official national release in January. I wanted the readers of Wyoming to get something first, for once, and it was their story, after all. Now that it’s been two months since FALL hit shelves, I am returning to Wyoming, my home, to do som
