      Bearing the Bad News
by Ben SteinLet me be the first to agree: The finance news lately is bad.The collapse of venerable firm Bear Stearns in the past few days has been dazzling. The company was supposed to be worth a bare minimum of $80 per share. It turns out to have been worth one-fortieth of that -- a catastrophe for its employees, whose fortunes lay largely in Bear's stock (a super-good lesson in diversification for everyone). That a business with a stellar reputation for measuring risk got it so wrong is a bad augury for other Wall Street firms. It turns out that the Street has been run largely as a gigantic casino, only a casino in which the house could lose big.Waiting for the Other ShoeObviously, we're all wondering when the next shoe will drop, or if there will be another one at all.In this environment

According to TSN:He will then be given four to six days to see if the swelling has gone down (using anti-inflammatory drugs) enough to return to play.If Ohlund has not recovered enough to play at that time he will undergo arthroscopic surgery, ending his season. It is unsure if Ohlund would be available to the Canucks during the playoffs. Luc Bourdon has been recalled to take Ohlund's spot. While I like Ohlund's stability on the blueline, he can't hit the net with his shots.....at all. I was getting sick of seeing his point shots miss the net. Bourdon won't do that. Luc will add some youth to the blueline and maybe some LIFE, which the Canucks could use

How the media's focus on bad news can lead to recession
One of my biggest beefs with the blogosphere is the lack of balance among many blogs, which pick an agenda and stick to it and deliberately ignore news items which contradict their missions; whereas big newspapers have multiple layers of fact-checkers and editors, blogs are the unedited musings of individuals. While this is certainly the strength of blogs -- which can quickly break important stories often much faster than newspapers -- it's also the concept's weakness, as objectivity can be clouded by specific agendas (i.e., even The Drudge Report tends to lean to the right rather than the center). To be sure, mainstream media also has their agendas, such as the New York Times' Left-of-center reputation or Fox News' rather obvious embrace of the Right, but when covering issues such as ec

      Bad news ignored
The market has been ignoring all the bad news and absorbing them very well with the index keep heading higher. It baffled me and i was so tempted to turn long because as a rule of thumb, if the market doesn't go down with bad news, it means it will turn up. But looking at the market, i notice many rallies had no decent follow through and hence held back. I told myself, if market really is turning up, the next sell-off will be well absorbed and we move higher. The price actions thus far has not been that of a typical bull market. The profits from Chartered becomes very precious because i had to cut loss on Allgreen when it threatens to break 1.30... so it became eat pig pay dog. The most boring part is.... there was a sell signal on 20th Feb in the market (4g1r on STI) and according t

      Bad news
My son (James) managed to get himself into trouble at school in the last week of term, tripping another child during a PE lesson resulting in a broken arm for the poor boy he tripped. James is heartbroken to have caused this injury to one of his friends, but his punishment seems inappropriate. After speaking to the school, my wife and his teacher have decided he should stop training in Taekwondo. I'm absolutely devastated - James really enjoys Taekwondo, and I love doing a sport with my son, but I'm not the kind of father who won't support decisions made by his mother and his school. I would understand this if he'd used a technique learned in a Teakwondo class but this just wasn't the case - he was just involved in a game another child had started. James, through no fault of his own, is quite a bit bigger and stronger than his peers at school.Hopefully this will blow over soon - I'm going to try and speak to the teacher myself in the new term and let her know just how important I

      Bad news for the Goracle
This year is going to be one of the coldest on record.  With record colds in the Southern Hemisphere reaching new lows and snow in some parts that have not seen snow in over 50 years.  But that doesn't stop the Goracle and his Disciples. They just had a big shindig at Bali and were chastising the US over Kyoto and "climate change".  And now scientists are saying that the Sun activity is at its lowest they've seen in years.  Hmm   I wonder how that could be???  Maybe the climate has something to do with the SUN.Year of global cooling By David Deming December 19, 2007 Al Gore says global warming is a planetary emergency. It is difficult to see how this can be so when record low temperatures are being set all over the world. In 2007, hundreds of people died, not from global warming, but from cold weather hazards.Since the mid-19th century, the mean global temperature has increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius. Th

Bad News for French Book Lovers
When will countries like France figure out that price controls are bad for the economy and totally unfair to the consumer? Probably not for a long time, if the ludicrous assaults on Amazon.com and eBay are any indication of the economic wisdom of those in charge there. European consumers suffer greatly from this kind of thinking, and that's a real shame. Amazon.com may not offer free delivery

      Good news, bad news
Today was kind of a good-news/bad-news day. Actually, it was the very definition of a good-news/bad-news day. Exhibit A: You won your motion! Now you have to go to trial!Exhibit B: Remember how you asked for a trial date of January 28? Nope, that's doesn't work. How about January 15?Exhibit C: You get to be out of the office for at least three weeks! Holed up in a hotel in Newark, NJ.So, that's the sum of it. Three weeks (or more!) in Newark in January. At least it's not somewhere really cold -- to go along with the crappy. This afternoon, my coworker sent me a lovely e-mail. In sum, he told me that I get to be the quarterback for the trial team. Of course, I took the metaphor too far. "Great," I wrote. "Hope I don't get intercepted too often -- or sacked." Heh, heh. So, that's the sum of it. It's a good thing I'm Jewish, because otherwise, my Christmas plans would totally be screwed. I've got a ton of work to do between now and mid-January. And, despite lea

Market Wrap - Plus some Good News/Bad News
Well, it looks like the market surprised me a little, and moved higher today. It was up 5 points to 2668. Despite such a small increase, the move really helped the technicals out a lot. The RSI is now above 50, and the MACD made the bullish crossover. If the market can move positively again tomorrow, we may see a little short term run. I would say to 2720 at least. This is actually good timing for me, as clients may have a decent amount of cash tomorrow. Which brings me to the bad news.TTGL filed their 10K today. While the earnings looked horrible, that wasn't the problem (they were not expected to show anything great until the Appco acquisition was accounted for). The problem was this:http://xml.10kwizard.com/filing_raw.php?repo=tenk&ipage=5307131If you read the filing you will see that TTGL will be doing a reverse split in a range of 1-for 1.5 to 1-for-3. This is not the best news. However, I think the reason behind the split is to get a NASDAQ listing. The company has applied for o

Bad News Dries Up In Iraq
The Investor Business Daily Had This on News From Iraq:For the first time in months - in fact, since the U.S. troop surge was put in place in June - coverage of U.S. policy in Iraq does not rank among the top 10 news stories as tracked by the Project for Excellence in Journalism. The percentage of news stories devoted to events in Iraq, moreover, has shrunk to 3%, the lowest since September and barely half the 2007 average. In only three other weeks this year has Iraq coverage been so scanty. All this in a period when word managed to get out through other sources that: U.S. troop casualties have plunged to their lowest level since February 2004, as rocket, mortar and suicide bomb attacks have all hit two-year lows. Iraqi civilian casualties are down two-thirds from their peak in December 2006. Iraq's government and the U.S. military say al-Qaida has been vanquished in Baghdad, as thousands of Iraqi families return to the capital to rebuild their lives. Iraq's government has signed up

From Bloomberg, "CBS Writers Authorize Negotiators to Call Strike:"``That couldn't come at a worse time,'' said Brad Adgate, research director at Horizon Media, an advertising agency in New York. ``Katie Couric has been struggling. Bad News for O's Fans; the March 29th, 2008 Exhibition Game in Washington D.C. (O's vs. Nationals)
Well, as you know the Nationals are opening up their new park in 2008, and they are having an exhibition game on March 29th in Washington D.C.For those of you who do not have Nationals' season tickets, I have some bad, bad news for you all. It sucks even more if you're an Orioles fan and live in the Washington area.It seems you cannot get tickets. From the Washington Post via the 'Nationals Journal'The March 29 game against the Orioles: It will be free to season-ticket holders, which is a change from previous years. But there will be no tickets available for the game. Kasten described it as a "dress rehearsal," and said, "We don't need to have the park full." The idea, it seems, is to get a healthy crowd in there to test such things as flushing all the toilets, etc., and give the staff a dry run. The club will work with the city to see if it can donate banks of free tickets to kids, etc., and they'll round out the crowd that way.Considering the Nationals and Orioles share overlapp

Some Ad Networks Are Bad News
By Larry Seltzer - eWEEK You wouldn't go surfing to just any site. You're careful about where you go. You only go to sites you trust. But who are you trusting? A series of recent attacks has resulted in seemingly respectable news sites serving malware and redirecting users to sites that serve malware. The problem is in the ads on those news sites. The ads are served by advertising networks that weren't careful enough with their own security. When you trust a Web site you have to trust everyone it's in bed with. The first one I became aware of was YNet, an Israeli news site. Don't go to that site just yet. The Ynetnews.com site I read is in English. The Hebrew site at ynet.co.il is far more popular, in fact the most popular news site in Israel. It is the Internet site for Yedioth Ahronoth, a very large Israeli newspaper. About two weeks ago I noticed that after going to the page from a bookmark that had only the domain nam

      Good news - bad news
I have some interesting news for myself. First the bad news, my old jewelry supplier is no more! Seems they bit the dust about 3 years ago. It was mostly costume stuff but they did have a really nice line of gold plated silver jewelry which I sold at very nice profits. After that news I had to get away from the computer and went into town.In town today there were several early Holiday craft fairs and I went to 2 of them. I was talking to several people about me looking for something to get involved in to make a living. Several of them started out just like me and now they are doing very well. It got my confidence up again.I got back home and went straight to the internet to find a supplier of a product that I could sell at the local Holiday Bazaars. I found an ad on craigslist.com and ended up talking to the owner of a Sterling silver jewelry distribution company. She was really nice and very helpful. It turns out she supplies several of the local florists and bridal boutiques in the l

More Michigan bad news: Chrysler cuts 12,000 slicing 1 in 3 jobs
By Rick Haglund Chronicle Detroit Bureau DETROIT — Michigan’s troubled economy is taking another unwelcome hit as Chrysler LLC slashes as many as 12,100 jobs and eliminates four vehicle models. The Auburn Hills-based automaker said Thursday that between 8,500 and 10,000 hourly jobs, 1,000 salaried jobs and about 1,100 contract positions would be cut through 2008. “This is a shockingly big announcement. It’s not a good sign for Michigan,” said Sean McAlinden, chief economist at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor. McAlinden said Michigan will lose 5,000 hourly jobs and most of the 2,000 salaried and contract jobs in Chrysler’s latest downsizing. Michigan has lost 285,000 net jobs since 2000, mainly because of the shrinking auto industry. The state has the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 7.5 percent. “It’s not inconceivable that you could have a whole decade of (net) job losses in the state,” said University of
