Bacterial cells, artificial vesicles use sugar components to ‘talk’
Washington, June 6 (ANI): Researchers at the University of Nottingham (UK) have been able to facilitate a conversation between bacterial cells and artificial polymer vesicles. Cameron Alexander and George Pasparakis at the University report that this first communication occurred by way of sugar groups on the vesicle surface. The vesicles later transfer information to the cells—in [...]

      Bacterial Skin Infections
There are many types of bacteria, both good and bad. In fact, most bacterial species cannot cause disease. Many species even play beneficial roles producing antibiotics and foodstuffs. The soil teems with free-living bacteria that perform many essential functions in the biosphere, like nitrogen fixation. As well, our bodies are covered with commensal bacteria that make up the normal flora.

Frog Skin Offers New Therapy Against Bacterial Infections
A naturally occurring agent in frog skin may inhibit multi-drug resistant bacterial strains. Researchers have identified antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as a promising candidates for therapeutic use, and they have found amphibian skin to be one of the richest sources of such AMPs. Five AMPs from three different frog and toad species were tested for antibacterial activity against multi-drug resistant strains. Initial results showed that all the peptides acted as antibacterial agents. A peptide called esculentin 1b produced an antibacterial response within 2 to 20 minutes of exposure.

Bacterial Toxin in the Home May Protect Infants from Eczema
New findings support the controversial ''hygiene hypothesis''Children whose homes contain high levels of endotoxin, a bacterial compound that collects in house dust, may be less likely to develop eczema during their first year of life, according to a study led by Dr. Wanda Phipatanakul, a pediatric allergist and immunologist at Children's Hospital Boston and assistant professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. The study corroborates other recent work that supports the ''hygiene hypothesis'' -- speculation that early exposure to infectious or inflammatory agents causes changes in babies' immune systems that reduce their risk of developing allergy-related conditions later in life.Various studies have looked at the relationship between endotoxin and allergies, but this is the first U.S

      Bacterial sex: quarantined!
You might have noticed several feeds on the sidebar. One of them (Connotea: csrsanchez''s bookmarks) lists the last five references added to my Connotea library. Last Tuesday I added a new reference: Bacterial solutions to the problem of sex, from PLoS Biology. "The problem of sex" refers to the difficulties to find a fully satisfactory explanation to why sexual reproduction appeared and what its consequences were (from a scientific, evolutionary perspective). After a couple of days, I noticed that the reference did not come out on my sidebar, while later-added entries did. The explanation is that the sexy reference was quarantined by Connotea, due to the repeated use of the word "sex", I guess. This is not a complaint, I understand the use of automatic filters to avoid submission of inappropriate links (and, of course, Connotea has all the right to define "inappropriateness" in the use of its FREE service). Given that automatic filters may be widespread in academic sites and e-mail

Microbial maladies: Bacterial toxins and the diseases they produce
Mother nature is one twisted old crone. Sure, she's all cute baby animals and pretty flowers and impressively intricate termite colonies, but mark my words, that lady's also got a toxic side. From tiny microbes to towering trees, there exists in this world a multitude of organisms working 'round the clock to synthesize substances capable of killing other living things, including us.Take bacteria. Within a single genus, Clostridium, you've got:Clostridium botulinum Maker of one of the most toxic substances known to exist, botulinum toxin. This badass protein binds to and disrupts the action of nerves that control muscle movement, resulting in paralysis. Death occurs due to asphyxiation, since your diaphragm and all the other muscles that you need to inhale stop working.Clostridium tetani Responsible for tetanus (i.e. rusty nail disease), due to its production of tetanospasmin. This downright sinister protein binds to neurons in your brain and spinal cord, preventing the release of i

Cubist Pharmaceuticals Wages War Against Bacterial Infections
By Yahoo's definition, Cubist Pharmaceuticals (CBST) is a biopharmaceutical company, engages in the research, development, and commercialization of pharmaceutical products for the acute care and anti-infective markets. In other words, Cubist develops anti-biotic drugs to fend bacteria that resist existing anti-bacterial medicine. In U.S. alone, almost 2 million people get bacterial infections every year, of which almost 5% succumb to the infections. Bacterial infections are a relatively smaller focus for biotechs and drug companies, who usually look to develop blockbusters that can rake in a few billion rather than the millions that Cubist is looking to bring in with their focus on the abandoned market of anti-biotics. Cubicin is the first major anti-biotic in over 13 years and is the most successful one of its kind ever, bringing in $350 million in revenue so far.On the flip side, CBST’s earnings have not always yielded the result investors have hoped for.
