Unsolicited, and in many cases unwanted flyer’s over the latest shiny new toy. Now a bunch of bloggers are whining about the whole thing, and while I am sympathetic to the issue, one [...]

-PATATAS CON BACON A LA NATA

Creamy Polenta with Arugula and Bacon
I am still disappointed that I only learned about the deliciousness that its polenta a year ago. I don't know how I made it 31 years without it. Seriously. Since then, I've made it in a new recipe 11 times. (I have no idea how many MORE times I've made it - I only track new recipes - but I bet it's a lot.) Leafing through magazines now, if I see a recipe with polenta, I'm 99.9% sure to rip it out. This is the level of my love.I'll be the first to admit (even though, if we're counting, my husband was the first) that this isn't anything special. I mean, it is (it has bacon!), but it didn't have a whole lot going on. I found its simplicity really added to its charm. You can't mess with a good thing. Especially when the good thing in question is comprised of creamy polenta, crisp bacon, and p

      What's not better with Bacon?
For 17 years I didn't eat meat. A few years ago I started eating meat again, and now I'm a dedicated carnivore. This post from Ooh, you tasty little things... reminds me of experiments I did with muffin mixes, back in my teenage days. I used to make a mean bacon muffin, in fact my mother took my muffins to some womens group meeting, and entered them into the cooking contest. They won the blue ribbon. No, she didn't tell them her 15-year old son was the cook. Funny, but I'm still a little peeved about that, 34 years later. Anyway, now I want to make some bacon cookies. We have some cookie mix here at the shop, and bacon... Stand by for genius, everyone! Peanut butter bacon cookies are coming to Rockhoppers. Oddly enough, the only images I can find for peanut butter bacon cookies are for doggie treats. I refuse to accept this obvious disparity! I'll let you know how they come out, and if you come by in the next few days I'll give you one if you ask nice. Pe

      Gummy Bacon
I am a big fan of Gummi Bears.  Specifically Haribo Gummi Colas.  They are shaped like little soda bottles and they actually taste like cola.  They are awesome.  Someone has taken the idea to the next level and has made gummy bacon.  It doesn’t actually taste like bacon it just looks like bacon.  It has a strawberry flavor.  I love bacon.  It is a culinary fact that just about everything tastes better with bacon.   But I have never once had the desire to eat a raw slice of bacon.  I guess there might be some novelty in pretending to eat a raw slice of bacon.  I just don’t have any desire to do so.  That being said if you have to have some of Uncle Oinkers Gummy Bacon you can get it here.

Random Dinner Snapshot: Percatelli with Tomatoes, Onions and Bacon
This is basically a version of Buccatini All’Amatriciana, and my favorite recipe for this dish is Lidia Bastianich’s, which is right here. I tried a different recipe this time; the main difference was that the bacon was cooked first and the onion and garlic were cooked in the leftover bacon drippings instead of olive oil. Next time I’ll probably go back to Lidia’s. The last time I made this, I had to use regular spaghetti because I couldn’t find the right kind of pasta - buccatini or percatelli - both of which are basically spaghetti that is a hollow tube. I found Pertatelli, and am delighted to say that this was fantastic. I served it with Gran Padano to grate over it, fresh Semolina bread, and a salad of Romaine, chives and carrot peelings with olive oil and Balsamic vinegar.

      Achin for Some Bacon
I had been looking around for a microwave bacon cooker for some time now and I’ve found a few, but they weren’t completely enclosed. An unenclosed bacon cooker calls for a messy microwave. Luckily I was able to try out a new invention, the CrispyClean® Bacon Broiler. I have to say that when I took it out of the box, I was so confused. Yes it came with instructions but me being me, if I can’t figure out how to use something without the instructions then I get frustrated. I couldn’t figure out how to open the broiler until I read that I have to unsnap the keys. The first two times I tried out the broiler, I followed the instructions, then I got addicted to eating bacon and started stuffing the bacon into the broiler without taking the vanes out and placing them on to a plate like suggested. That said, you don’t have to follow the instructions word for word. For this review I used pork bacon, I was on a roll buying turkey bacon. Since I wanted to do the re

After that break some eggs (1 egg for 1 bacon) in very hot oil until the glairs become solid and remove them with slotted spoon. Strain the eggs and put them on the fried bacon. Sprinkle with pepper and finecut parsley. Serve them hot.

      Bacon Wrapped Turkey for Thanksgiving
Many people claim that deep fried turkey is the best turkey to have at Thanksgiving.  I think I’ve found a turkey prep method that may beat that.  Turkey wrapped in bacon! There is nothing better than bacon.  Bacon makes everything better.  Wrapping your turkey in bacon would theoretically make your turkey better.  Think about it- the fat from the bacon would baste the bird as it roasts.  Your home would small of turkey and bacon.  It would be wonderful. As for seasoning?  Forget salt and pepper, use bacon salt! Ok.  I’m joking about the bacon salt (it would make every non-bacony food better, though).  If you are interested in wrapping your turkey with bacon, here is a recipe.

      Chicken, Bacon and Vegetable Soup
This recipe came about because I had bought 10 very cheap chicken drumsticks, plus had promised I'd bring Rich some soup into the office once I had a flask to bring it in. It possibly wasn't the best soup to take to work in a flask, but it did go down well.I had simply roasted the Drumsticks in my new combination oven for 30 minutes or so, then stripped the best of the meat off them, and put the remains and bones into a large pan of water with some celery leaves, onion, carrot and bay leaves and simmered for a few hours to make a stock. Half the chicken I used a Pasta Bake, saving the other half for this soup.I pretty much did exactly what I did with my Leek and Potato Soup Recipe, only adding Celery and more Carrot than I would normally use, plus the Home-Made Stock, Chicken and Bacon.

      More Bacon Goodness
I have many times pointed out my love of all things bacon, so I was happy to find that Vosges Haut-Chocolate offers a milk chocolate bar laced with smoked Applewood bacon bits: Crisp, buttery, compulsively irresistible bacon and milk chocolate combination has long been a favorite of mine. I started playing with this combination at the tender age of six while eating chocolate chip pancakes drenched in maple syrup. Beside my chocolate-laden cakes laid three strips of fried bacon, just barely touching a sweet pool of maple syrup. Just a bite of the bacon was too salty and yearned for the sweet kiss of chocolate syrup. In retrospect, perhaps this was a turning point, for on that plate something magical happened: the beginnings of a combination so ethereal and delicious that it would haunt my thoughts until I found the medium to express it–chocolate. –KatrinaCopyright © 2007 JONTILLMAN.COM. Spicy Red Lentil and Bacon Soup
Lentil soup is definitely a family favourite, and after getting my mum's recipe recently, I decided to vary it slightly. I remember that my mum always used to add chopped frankfurters to the soup to make it a cheap meal for the family, although she stopped doing that during my time as a vegetarian, and with my youngest sister also turning veggie, they have never made a reappearance. Still, it doesn't really need anything like that added, but I do find that having some bacon in there, is definitely a nice addition. Today, I didn't have any nice Smoked Bacon in the fridge, but did have some Pancetta which needed using up. Normally, I would chop all the excess fat from the Bacon and add it to the soup after the stock, but with the Pancetta, I first fried it in its own fat, then, poured it

      Bacon Wrapped Porkchops
A lot of people don't eat pork chops anymore because they say they have little flavor and the meat is a dried out piece of shoe rubber. Because pork is very different today than it was then. It's bred to be leaner, so less fat
