Unfortunately Outlook isn't great about backing up your PST file while Outlook is running, but Vinod has found a simple solution: Set a rule in Outlook to keep a separate copy of your incoming email in a separate PST file on an encrypted, external thumb drive. The encrypted part is optional, but it's a smart move if you want to keep that data secure (check out our guide to encrypting data with TrueCrypt for details on how to set up an encrypted drive). Pet sitters need backups - & why I’m taking tomorrow off
It’s extremely important for pet sitters to have back up! Whether it’s a pet sitting company that has many employees or a sole proprietor, anyone who pet sits for a living needs to have someone to call on in case of emergency. Tonight I had to call on my backup. After doing a pet sitting visit this evening I got rear ended as I was leaving the apartment complex where my client lives. My car’s fine, but my neck, shoulder, & back took the brunt of the hit and I’m pretty beat up feeling right now. So, rather than try to drag myself out of bed in the morning for an early morning visit, I called on my backup person. Thankfully she’s available and knows the cats, and my client is fine with the stand in. I’m not in such bad shape that it would be impossible for me to do the visit

Make Automated Backups in Office 2000

Turn on the Always create backup copy option, and click Ok. However, as part of Microsoft's goal of seamless interface consistency, this functionality is completely different in Excel: When saving a file, click Tools in the toolbar, and select General Options. Turn on the Always create backup option, and click Ok. The problem is that this option is only saved for the current file; you'll have to go through the above steps to have automatic backups for each and every file you save in Excel. Are Data Backups Worth The Time?
Our computers have become a necessary part of our lives. We use them for doing work, corresponding with friends and family and even for entertainment. Over time, most computer users create many file that are important documents which could cost both time and money if lost. Data backups are the best way to ensure you don't lose any of those files. Don't make the mistake of believing that backups are only for computer geeks or large corporations, or a task that can be performed 'when I get around to it'. On the contrary, backups are a necessity for everyone. Even if your computer has been running reliably for years, it will fail one day - either through virus attack, user error or just age. On that day, one of two things will happen. You'll either suffer the grief that comes with losing financial information, passwords, music collections, personal photographs and all the software you've purchased. Or, you can repair or replace the computer and restore from the backups you've been

BACKUP and RESTORE in SQL Server -- Full Backups
This article covers the basics of full backup backups and restores in SQL Server. The examples are from SQL Server 2005 however it applies to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005. This is a very basic article covering full database backups, database restores and the simple and full recovery models. In a typical installation SQL Server stores its data in two files. One has an MDF extension and stores the data itself and the other has an LDF extension and stores the transaction log. You can configure SQL Server to have multiple data files and multiple transaction log files if you'd like but that's beyond the scope of this article. When SQL Server processes a transaction it goes through the following steps: 1. It writes what it's going to do to the transaction log. 2. It makes the change to the data file. This change is typically made on the in-memory copy of that portion of the data file. 3. It writes to the log that the transaction is committed. 4. The CHECKPOINT process writes

How to burn Xbox 360 backups in Linux
Few days ago I wanted to backup my Xbox 360 games just in case something will happen to the original DVD’s. Backup was quite easy, I used some Windows tools for it. However I wanted to burn the created images in Linux. I couldn’t find any options in my favorite program K3b how to setup layer break, so I had to search around the internet to find the right solution. To be honest with you, it is easier than you might think. All you need to do is to open your terminal and type: growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dao -use-the-force-luke=break:1913760 -dvd-compat -speed=2 -Z /dev/cdrom=IMAGE.000 Instead of IMAGE.000 you have to use your own backup image, the rest of it can stay the same. Basically you are using growisofs terminal program for burning cd’s/dvd’s, which is part of dvd+rw-tools. If you do not have this, you have to simply install it via synaptic or apt-get. Standard layer break for Xbox 360 backups is 1913760, using speed 2x, which is ideal for Verbatim 8.5GB

Free Cell Phone Backups with BitPim
As I mentioned earlier this week I finally broke down and bought a new cell phone. My Samsung SCH a930 arrived yesterday and was one heck of a surprise. While I've only made a few calls so far I've been playing around with it a lot and am quite impressed. Being the geek that I am one of my first priorities was to grab a data cable and Sandisk Micro SD 2 GB card so I could get some audio, video and images onto the phone. Thanks to an old Lifehacker post I also came across BitPim, an open source Personal Information Manager, that makes syncing just about everything VERY simple. So far I've added custom wallpaper, updated my addresses through my Laptop (rather than through the keypad) and even played around with some of the calendar. One of the best features here is the ability to move pictures to and from your cell without worrying about sending pix messages or trying to text them. Why incremental backups are larger than expected?
The Filing Cabinet has a nice explanation on this. I'm glad they wrote it since I was really beginning to wonder - why! Incremental backups are suppose to save the amount of space over the full backup - which they do, but not in the ordinary fashion. We’ve seen a number of customers ask why their incremental backups are almost as large as their full backup. This can be surprising on a lightly used system where you don’t change or add a lot of files between backups. Seeing files backed up that you know you didn’t change can be perplexing, but there is a good explanation: the files were indeed changed, either by a program or a perhaps inadvertently by a person. For example, any of the following actions can cause files to be changed and therefore backed up: Antivirus programs writing to alternate streams on the files or programs that update media file metadata (ID3 tags, for example). Even right-clicking a file and viewing its properties can add an alternate data stream to the fi
