I finally got around to watching Babel last night. This is a great story about connections across cultures and countries--how one incident can involve an entire world. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu does an excellent job assembling Guillermo Arriaga's screenplay.Babel happens in flashes--the story is cut up into pieces for the audience to place together. Young hopefuls play their part in epic semi-final showdown Arsenal’s Justin Hoyte and Ajax’s Ryan Babel played their part in an amazing game overnight that saw the Dutch win 13-12 on penalties to progress to the final of the UEFA U21 Championships. I made some comments yesterday about the opportunity the game gave both players to impress Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger but somewhat predictably, neither player really took their chance. It’s not easy being deaf and trying to learn a foreign language. I have learned Irish (it’s compulsory at school in Ireland), German (at school), Spanish (I lived there for some time) and Japanese (at university). But hey, it’s not impossible. My theory is that once you have learned your first spoken language, you lay down the building blocks for learning another language. Once you’ve mastered one, it gets easier to master another. Of course, it helps if the language gene runs in the family, which it does in mine. Being deaf, you have to learn spoken language as you would learn a foreign language, because you can’t just hear it and pick it up quicker that way, you have to put much more effort into it and plough patiently through the language books. I have to say, I think Irish is one of the harder languages to learn, as the written language isn’t the same as the spoken language. Gaelic wikipedia, anyone?! German is straightforward, as is Spanish.

Leslie and I are slightly behind the times, Babel was out in theater’s some time ago and we didn’t pay the $20 to go see it, it actually better to just wait and either buy it on iTunes for 10 bucks, or rent it on the 360. So we got to finally see Babel. Let me first say it has made it to the Top 20 on my movie list, and it was a brilliant effort by director Alejandro González Iñárritu who also directed, 21 Grams, and by writer Guillermo Arriaga (who wrote 21 Grams). The film’s title implies the multiple civilizations coming together in one effort (possibly the film itself) and colliding into cultures and languages distinctly different from eachother. It is an epic tale that crosses borders, both of countries and of personal boundaries. The film also dealt with our inability to communicate - relationally, physically, politically and culturally. Review: Babel (2006) – Another Amores Perros? I don’t think so!(5/10) 4 people, totally disconnected, lives intertwine, time-bending screenplay, unfortunate consequences, how it all fits together…Have you seen that before?
