Ayurvedic health care in humid weather
By: Dr.Savitha Suri Monsoon! Monsoon! Please come quickTo water the plantsThat looks like sticksWe need the rainWe need the rainTo trickle downOur dried up drains ………….This poem caught my eyes while browsing internet. Monsoon brings joy as plants wear a green look, rivers swell to brim and dry lands become wet. The grim side of this season is increased humidity, which troubles humans. What is humidity?Humidity is the amount of water vapour in air. It is usually described as "relative humidity" and expressed in percentage. 100% humidity means the water vapour in the air is at its maximum at that particular temperature. When humidity is low (amount of water vapour is less in air), the evaporation from the surrounding areas is rapid. Hence the clothes dry quickly, soil dries up, sweat evaporates from skin etc. When humidity is high (amount of water vapour is more in air), clothes dry slowly, sweat do not evaporate from skin and we feel sticky and uncomfortable. We feel comfortable

Pizhichil, one of the purvakarmas. The Vedas revealed the truth that all the living and non-living things are a combination of pancha bhoota (prithvi, ap, thejas, vayu, akasa). Ayurveda also agrees with this principle. To regulate the living body easily, the acharyas concised the pancha bhootas into tridoshas (vata, pitta, kapha). These tridoshas are the basic pavement for all ayurvedic theories. Along with tridoshas, datusamjna, malasamjna are given to certain constituents for the functioning concept of living things. Datus and malas are controlled by doshas. Samyavastha (well-being) is the condition when the doshas are in their natural rhythm. When this rhythm is lost it is called vaishamya (disease). The former means order, the latter, disorder.Doshas cannot be identified separately in s

On Transcendental Meditation II: Ayurvedic Medicine
The Maharishi likes to have different fingers in different pies. He has tried to develop TM not just into a relaxation technique, but a way of life, with a rival TM version for all of your every-day needs. In this second article of the series, I will be looking at the Movement’s approach to healthcare, the ancient Indian tradition it has adopted known as Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine, with a long and colourful history. It has been lauded by the likes of Deepak Chopra and David Orme Johnson, and to this day it is still so popular in India that, in that country, it is virtually mainstream. However, like all forms of alternative medicine, its results are founded on fallacy. When its methods and remedies have been tested, they have shown to be ineffective, or worse still, harmful. This is one of the most complex and involved topics the series will deal with, and there is a limit to how much detail I can offer within the scope of one blog posting. I will try

      Ayurvedic Medicine and SAD
According to Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide, "Ayurevedic medicine (meaning "science of life") is a comprehensive system of medicine that combines natural therapies with a highly personalized approach to the treatment of disease. It places an equal emphasis on body, mind, and spirit, and strives to restore the innate harmony of the individual."The most famous proponent of Ayurvedic medicine is Deepak Chopra, M.D., a western-trained endocrinologist, who is the co-founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California.
