Avalanches in Planet Mars Pictured by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
Avalanches on the North Polar Scarps in the Planet Mars was caught by the High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter - the first ever image of active avalanches near it's north pole.Ingrid Daubar Spitale of the University of Arizona, Tucson, who works on targeting the camera and has studied hundreds of HiRISE images, was the first person to notice the avalanches. "It really surprised me," she said. "It's great to see something so dynamic on Mars. A lot of what we see there hasn't changed for millions of years.""We don't know what set off these landslides," said Patrick Russell of the University of Berne, Switzerland, a HiRISE team collaborator. "We plan to take more images of the site through the changing Martian seasons to see if this kind of avalanc

      The Avalanches

The Avalanches - Since I Left You
The Avalanches are a much-feted six-man crew of sample addicts from Australia whose debut album, Since I Left You, is a bargain-bin vinyl throwback to the Daisy Age. This album is constructed like a mix tape and calculated to tweak the dance floor. Snatches of familiar rhythms bubble up throughout, giving the record a comfortable lived-in feel but also betraying the fact that the group hasn't dug very far through the crates to source their raw material. There's little doubt that this kind of sample reconstruction has become standard fare for retrogressive adolescents with precious little musical flair and a mania for collecting records. The Avalanches get full marks for their seamless mixing skills, but otherwise it all feels way too tidy, bristling with its own inventiveness when it should be striving for something that transcends its influences.

NZ Back-country skiers warned of avalanches
The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council issued the warning because of the recent conditions that have increased the risk of man-made avalanches in the back-country behind the Remarkables, Treble Cone, Coronet Peak and Cardrona. Avalanche programme manager Steve Schreiber said the man-made avalanches include both deliberate and accidental, and people heading into the areas away from the main ski areas were putting themselves at risk.

[2000] The Avalanches - Since I Left You (Mp3 Download)
Review by Andy Kellman @ allmusic.com Endless summers for many youths don't consist of beaches and surfboards. Instead, they're spent on blacktops and jungle gyms. More gritty and halfway between the curb and the hoop than anything celestial, the Avalanches remind you of a point in your life when you could blissfully hang upside down from monkey bars and just dangle. Like recklessly riding
