Planes, Trains And Automobiles: The China Way
James Fallows, Atlantic Magazine writer extraordinaire, has a great post, entitled,”‘The’ way vs ‘a’ way (Japan v China dept),” comparing Japan’s way of doing things versus China’s (h/t to Experience Not Logic). Fallows uses fueling a plane as a great visual example, but to fully understand it, you must go to his blog check it out. Fallows summarizes the differences between China methods and Japan methods as follows: With usual caveats against sweeping generalization, what this made me think was: Japan is all about the way of doing things. Practice, ritual, perfectionism, as much fanatical attention to the process as to the result. China is all about finding a way to do things. Improvisation, little interest in rules, putting up with whatever is necessary to attain the result. (Yeah yeah yeah, there are exceptions: perfectionist operations in China, loosey-goosey ones in Japan. Still.) At the moment, I am feeling positive toward both ap

However, another important aspect you are going to have to grasp, should you wish to make money from cars, is that you cannot keep them forever! You are going to have to buy them, do them up, fall in love, and then let them go!Choosing The Right CarWhen it comes to buying cars and doing them up, with a view to making a profit, you are going to have to ensure that you buy the right kind of car in the first place. So, how is that done? Well, first you have to consider demand. Embedded Electronics Technology in Automobiles
As automobiles become increasingly user-independent and ‘intelligent,’ the demand for embedded electronic devices for use in cars is steadily increasing. This was indicated by increased demand for printed card buses (PCBs) that were destined for use as embedded devices in automobiles. PCB production rose in several parts of Europe, and experts in the industry are predicting moderate growth worldwide in the near future. Embedded systems, because of their small size, low power consumption and rapid response rates have become valuable to the automotive industry as parts of safety components, sensors and on-board computers.   Virtual Mechanisms Powered by Embedded Systems Car manufacturer, Porsche, in cooperation with dSPACE of Germany, has developed an electronics system that simulates the forces at work when one shifts gears. The shift force simulator simulates the normal operating conditions of a car from a driver’s perspective. Available inputs include the gear stick an

While I still enjoy this previous post (with pictures of the described drive), the topic of all-night commuting is such a painfully bizarre one that I thought it could stand to be dusted off and revisited for this series. Read the complete series: Part 1 - Cabs Part 2 - Trains Part 3 - Planes Part 4 - Flight Mishaps As I neared the graduation date for my masters degree, I happened to land two orchestra jobs--one in Memphis, Tennessee and one in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The two schedules magically coincided, with nary a conflict between the two, and I was overjoyed at this, certain of at least 14 weeks of orchestral employment that first year out of school. Examining the dates more closely, I realized that many of the 8 p.m. Saturday concerts in Memphis were followed by 11 a.m. rehearsals in Milwaukee. I panicked, seeing my future employment crumbl

Maintaining the Brakes of Your Automobiles
Slowing down or stopping your vehicle is very important.  When somebody suddenly crosses the street, it is very important that the driver cautiously stops the vehicle.  When the yellow traffic light is on, the driver should slow down.  These are just some of the many occasions wherein stopping and slowing down of automobiles are very crucial. Stopping and slowing down the automobile are made possible by a very important automotive component — the auto brake.    How does the brake of your vehicle work?  There is definitely a system that allows the proper operation of the brakes. You need to press down the brake pedal to enable the vehicle to send out fluid to the brakes.  Subsequently, the brakes will put out force to the tires, and the tires will pass on the force to the road through friction.  Since breaks are vital components of your automobile, it is just proper that you maintain them well.  Here are some helpful tips: - Make certain that you do not drip or spray an

We can strap it into bulkhead seats or use one of several available flight cases to get our instrument from place to place.Even though our instruments are massive (massively awesome, I like to say), they really aren’t that much bulkier than many of the other ite

Rarely was pollution a problem in the early days, mainly because fuel-using vehicles were not yet in existence. Hence gas emissions were not as troublesome as it is today. After some years of experiencing these fuel dependent cars, people are again turning towards electricity driven cars for help to save the environment. There have been some car manufacturers who have taken the turn. Basses, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Part 2 - Trains
In the first part of this series I described the utter nastiness that results when you combine cabs and double basses. The horrible experiences from this first installment have given me an irrational hatred of cabs. I never take them, bass or no bass. To this day, even the very sight of a cab makes my blood boil, although that could also be due to being constantly cut off by them during my commutes around the metro area.Cabs are definitely out for me, although I do seem to have become a train guy in recent years, however. I can frequently be found perched on rickety platforms of the Chicago Transit Authority system, waiting for my chance to cram myself into a crowded train car, trying to simultaneously protect the bass, hold on to something, and let the withered old lady with crumpled-newspaper-filled shopping bags squeeze by me.You’ve got to be at least a little crazy to cram your bass on a train. Basses, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Part 1 - Cabs
I hate driving. I am also a bass player. This is a problem. As I watch my violinist, flutist, and clarinetist colleagues getting off of the train outside of a gig while I circle frantically for a parking spot (legal or illegal—anything! I’m running late!), my eyes narrow and my jealousy burns. Why on Earth did I pick this big, awkward, delicate, oddly shaped transportation nightmare of an instrument as my means of livelihood? My colleagues who play smaller instruments have it easy even if they choose to drive, getting out of their Toyota Prius carpool while I lumber around the block all by myself in my gas-guzzling SUV. Bass players have to drive and have a hard time carpooling with other musicians, and trains are not really an option for most bass players. Over the years I have occasionally thrown caution to the wind and put myself (and my instrument) in the hands of the Chicago and Regional Transit Authority. These are my stories. Feel free to add your own.

First off, one of my posts is in this week's Festival of Under 30 Finances #20.Secondly, as a result of my accident this winter, my car still has some residual defects. I won't go into the boring detail, but suffice to say that it is drivable and that I am currently driving it. It needs one replacement part that I will get when I am at home and it has one other annoyingly noisy issue. At least, I hope that it is only annoying and nothing more. The car tends to make sounds like something is loose whenever I go over large bumps. And, around here, there are large bumps (and some seemingly bottomless pits) everywhere! Oh well, I'll have it checked out when I get home.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles -What is your preferred method of travel?
Personally, I’m going to go with automobiles on this one. They say that planes are actually the safest way to travel, and I will agree with that as a train crashes in the United States every 24 hours and only God knows how many cars crash every day. Yet, I still feel more secure in my own vehicle. Maybe it’s because I’m in control, maybe it’s the fact that I can pull over at any time and get out, walk around and stretch my legs. Or maybe it’s just the fact that the only crying babies I have to deal with are my own. No matter whether it be one or all of the above, I definitely like travel by auto better, no matter how much faster a plane is.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles in Korea
Transport in Korea can be surprisingly easy but also frustratingly difficult. Here are a few tips I've picked up so far.Planes.Korean Air is the larger of the two Korean airlines. They have a good website where you can check their flight schedule and seat availability but when it comes to booking a seat and getting a ticket, unless you have a Korean credit card forget it.The site does claim to handle certain North American credit cards, but for those of us with European credit cards you have to phone them, tell them all the details you've just worked out on their site and you get a booking reference. You have five days to go to their office or a travel agent to pay for the ticket in person. Quite why the website insists on reservation and booking in one step, rather than allowing online reservation and subsequent payment in person is beyond me.For our Visa run we've chosen to fly to Tokyo for a few days. We will return next week on tourist visas. We had a reservation for Korean Air
