I'm out! Headed to Sand Springs, Oklahoma this week; via Amarillo, via Oklahoma City, via Tulsa. When it's all said and done I'll have traveled 8+ hours one-way, and spent $25 on Oklahoma toll roads...oh joy...I'll be back to regular posting, which is irregular at best after the holidays. Many of the popular auto manufacturers we know today got their start manufacturing other sorts of engines, and BMW is no different. Opened in 1913 as Rapp Motorenwerke (Motorworks) in a former bicycle factory, the company originally manufactured airplane engines. After World War I, and the treaty of Versailles, German manufacturers were required to cease [...]
In cars, this device is used to increase the "effective displacement" and volumetric efficiency of an engine; it is a blower that pushes the fuel air into the cylinders, as if the engine had larger valves and cylinders, resulting in a "larger" engine that weighs less.In 1900, Gottlieb Daimler, of Daimler-Benz (Daimler AG), was the first to patent a forced-induction system for internal combustion e

One thing that used to really irritate me when I worked at a movie house was how customers — I’ll never call them the euphemism “guests,” since I never invited them — seemed to be extremely conflicted about what to buy from the concession stand. Well my Mom's 80th birthday party turned out to be quite the fun filled weekend, with getting there the most stressful part. I had booked the jump-seat to St.-Louis on my airline and got to the gate for a noon flight to be informed that crew scheduling had assigned an extra flight attendant to the flight. The flight was also over booked so I was bumped off the jump-seat and it went out full with m

I do not own a car and definitely I want to possess one in the near future. I always dream driving my own car so that I don't have to bother my friends and family to take me to where I want to go. Although car nowadays is an essential but of course, not all of us can afford to have one. If ever I will buy a car, I want to make sure that it is my dream car. That it is what I really want and that I can get most out of my money. In Asia especially here in the Philippines, Honda cars are very well-liked and I too, want one. I constantly track updates of what's new with Honda. And lately, I heard about Honda VCM 643. And it is really marvellous! The Variable Cylinder Management enables the engine to switch between six, four and three cylinder operation. Now, that's what you call a stunnin
Summary: Car manufacturers are not the only ones who invest in the search for automobile industry in Brazil; universities do too. Such is the case with the school's Center of Industrial Engineering University (FEI) in Sao Bernardo do Campo, in the greater Sao Paulo, Brazil's south-east, which shows the environmentally correct model developed by its students at the Trade Show of the 24th International Automobile. One of the highlights is the hybrid Astra, 25 operated by electric batteries, which in turn are charged by a small combustion engine. "It is an engine combustion of low-displacement with just one cylinder, so it is very economical. Unique Its aim is to drive the generator that charge batteries," said Milton Monteverde Belli, a student and auto mechanics Technology who worked on th
In America, there are many ways to get from here to there. For years, the single most popular mode of transportation for most Americans was the car. As gas prices rise to that terrifying $4.00/gallon threshold, many are beginning to look for cheaper alternatives for business trips and family vacations.
Cost shouldn't be the only consideration when planning your next trip. You should also think
The anti lock braking is considered to be the latest innovation and technological revolution in the field of a modern automobile braking system. ABS as it is commonly known, functions with the help of an automated and specialized computer which activates the brake pumps at the time of powerful deceleration of the wheels. During this time, the wheels will not get locked and automobile driver will be able to drive safely and securely. This type of system functions extremely well in wet, slippery or icy conditions, preventing skids and loss of directional control. How Do the Breaking System Work In Vehicle :The anti lock braking system comprises of four chief components namely speed sensors, pumps, valves and controller. The speed sensors are generally installed at each and every wheel and som

James Fallows, Atlantic Magazine writer extraordinaire, has a great post, entitled,”‘The’ way vs ‘a’ way (Japan v China dept),” comparing Japan’s way of doing things versus China’s (h/t to Experience Not Logic). Fallows uses fueling a plane as a great visual example, but to fully understand it, you must go to his blog check it out. Fallows summarizes the differences between China methods and Japan methods as follows:
With usual caveats against sweeping generalization, what this made me think was: Japan is all about the way of doing things. Practice, ritual, perfectionism, as much fanatical attention to the process as to the result. China is all about finding a way to do things. Improvisation, little interest in rules, putting up with whatever is necessary to attain the result.
(Yeah yeah yeah, there are exceptions: perfectionist operations in China, loosey-goosey ones in Japan. Still.)
At the moment, I am feeling positive toward both ap

As automobiles become increasingly user-independent and ‘intelligent,’ the demand for embedded electronic devices for use in cars is steadily increasing. This was indicated by increased demand for printed card buses (PCBs) that were destined for use as embedded devices in automobiles. PCB production rose in several parts of Europe, and experts in the industry are predicting moderate growth worldwide in the near future.
Embedded systems, because of their small size, low power consumption and rapid response rates have become valuable to the automotive industry as parts of safety components, sensors and on-board computers.
Virtual Mechanisms Powered by Embedded Systems
Car manufacturer, Porsche, in cooperation with dSPACE of Germany, has developed an electronics system that simulates the forces at work when one shifts gears. The shift force simulator simulates the normal operating conditions of a car from a driver’s perspective. Available inputs include the gear stick an
Well I'll start my blog on my utter hatred for the the greatest social mobiliser, yet the greatest bane on mankind, the Automobile.
There is perhaps no lesser example of human intolerance and arrogance than the various forms of the internal combustion engine powering our atrophied, fat, lazy bodies through the dead corpses of millions of years old sea life.

This topic was actually the very first personal narrative ever attempted here on the blog, a little less than a year ago. While I still enjoy this previous post (with pictures of the described drive), the topic of all-night commuting is such a painfully bizarre one that I thought it could stand to be dusted off and revisited for this series. Read the complete series: Part 1 - Cabs Part 2 - Trains Part 3 - Planes Part 4 - Flight Mishaps As I neared the graduation date for my masters degree, I happened to land two orchestra jobs--one in Memphis, Tennessee and one in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The two schedules magically coincided, with nary a conflict between the two, and I was overjoyed at this, certain of at least 14 weeks of orchestral employment that first year out of school. Examining the dates more closely, I realized that many of the 8 p.m. Saturday concerts in Memphis were followed by 11 a.m. rehearsals in Milwaukee. I panicked, seeing my future employment crumbl

Slowing down or stopping your vehicle is very important. When somebody suddenly crosses the street, it is very important that the driver cautiously stops the vehicle. When the yellow traffic light is on, the driver should slow down. These are just some of the many occasions wherein stopping and slowing down of automobiles are very crucial.
Stopping and slowing down the automobile are made possible by a very important automotive component — the auto brake. How does the brake of your vehicle work? There is definitely a system that allows the proper operation of the brakes. You need to press down the brake pedal to enable the vehicle to send out fluid to the brakes. Subsequently, the brakes will put out force to the tires, and the tires will pass on the force to the road through friction.
Since breaks are vital components of your automobile, it is just proper that you maintain them well. Here are some helpful tips:
- Make certain that you do not drip or spray an

Many valuable goods depreciate in value mere weeks after they’re introduced. New vehicles, computers, and television sets all go down in price almost immediately. However, a few items actually increase in value as they grow older. Antique automobiles can easily become thousands of dollars more expensive each year with some particularly rare models costing millions. Of course, the real value of antique automobiles lies in their history and their beautiful craftsmanship, qualities that newer cars rarely have or will ever obtain.

This was forwarded to me by Chicago-area jazz bassist Rich Armandi. Hopefully you will get a good laugh about the woes bassists feel trying to get a bass on and off a plane.
During the early years, many of the cars and automobiles that were used thrived on electric energy. Rarely was pollution a problem in the early days, mainly because fuel-using vehicles were not yet in existence. Hence gas emissions were not as troublesome as it is today.
After some years of experiencing these fuel dependent cars, people are again turning towards electricity driven cars for help to save the environment. There have been some car manufacturers who have taken the turn.
Logically, it seems ironic that people may find themselves using resources that were originally placed to control the varying factors of contributing towards global warming issues we are having a hard time battling today.

In the first part of this series I described the utter nastiness that results when you combine cabs and double basses. The horrible experiences from this first installment have given me an irrational hatred of cabs. I never take them, bass or no bass. To this day, even the very sight of a cab makes my blood boil, although that could also be due to being constantly cut off by them during my commutes around the metro area.Cabs are definitely out for me, although I do seem to have become a train guy in recent years, however. I can frequently be found perched on rickety platforms of the Chicago Transit Authority system, waiting for my chance to cram myself into a crowded train car, trying to simultaneously protect the bass, hold on to something, and let the withered old lady with crumpled-newspaper-filled shopping bags squeeze by me.You’ve got to be at least a little crazy to cram your bass on a train. I often go through phases, suddenly trying to take the train everywhere no matter

First off, one of my posts is in this week's Festival of Under 30 Finances #20.Secondly, as a result of my accident this winter, my car still has some residual defects. I won't go into the boring detail, but suffice to say that it is drivable and that I am currently driving it. It needs one replacement part that I will get when I am at home and it has one other annoyingly noisy issue. At least, I hope that it is only annoying and nothing more. The car tends to make sounds like something is loose whenever I go over large bumps. And, around here, there are large bumps (and some seemingly bottomless pits) everywhere! Oh well, I'll have it checked out when I get home.
Personally, I’m going to go with automobiles on this one. They say that planes are actually the safest way to travel, and I will agree with that as a train crashes in the United States every 24 hours and only God knows how many cars crash every day. Yet, I still feel more secure in my own vehicle. Maybe it’s because I’m in control, maybe it’s the fact that I can pull over at any time and get out, walk around and stretch my legs. Or maybe it’s just the fact that the only crying babies I have to deal with are my own.
No matter whether it be one or all of the above, I definitely like travel by auto better, no matter how much faster a plane is.

I know. I know. The Brokeback Mountain parody has been done to death. However for some reason this one for me is hands down well above the rest. Transport in Korea can be surprisingly easy but also frustratingly difficult. Here are a few tips I've picked up so far.Planes.Korean Air is the larger of the two Korean airlines. They have a good website where you can check their flight schedule and seat availability but when it comes to booking a seat and getting a ticket, unless you have a Korean credit card forget it.The site does claim to handle certain North American credit cards, but for those of us with European credit cards you have to phone them, tell them all the details you've just worked out on their site and you get a booking reference. You have five days to go to their office or a travel agent to pay for the ticket in person. Quite why the website insists on reservation and booking in one step, rather than allowing online reservation and subsequent payment in person is beyond me.For our Visa run we've chosen to fly to Tokyo for a few days. We will return next week on tourist visas. We had a reservation for Korean Air
