The redesigned 2009 Acura TSX was revealed live at the New York Auto Show just a few moments ago, and despite the new face of Acura, the TSX isn't nearly as ugly in person as we suspected. We've found that the key to the new nose is partnering it with lighter colors (silver, white, etc.) and avoiding the darker hues that don't do much to blend with the bright metallic mug.While we've already covered details of the TSX in our previous post, a few of the high points are worth repeating. As some of you might have already heard by now. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been unceremoniously de-cloaked courtesy of MyRide.com and the New Tiburon forums and is now making the rounds online. The consumer-grade version of the concept shown last year in Los Angeles simply looks fantastic, and with both turbo-four and V6 power on tap, it's ready to make some noise. Our friends over at Pickuptruck.com have learned that Pontiac will debut a production-ready ST pickup at this year's New York Auto Show in late March. The Pontiac ST pickup is based on the Holden VE Ute that recently debuted in Australia, and since development of the vehicle consists mainly of grafting the Pontiac G8 front clip onto the Holden VE Ute, the business case for the vehicle is a no-brainer. What did stand between the Pontiac ST pickup and production was the U.S. exchange rate between the Australian and U.S. dollar, but apparently the difference isn't as bad as once thought and the price of the ST won't be out of reach for its target market. All-wheel-drive systems are becoming an increasingly popular feature for large sedans. They allow for more exciting driving dynamics than pure front-wheel-drive, but also provide for increased fair weather traction over pure rear-wheel-drive. While browsing the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show we discovered Audi's 5.2L V10 FSI engine in all its 450 hp glory. It was perched on a stand in the Audi booth mated to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, and was strategically displayed amongst the S6 and S8 sedans, which it powers. We remembered reading about this engine in the January 2007 issue of SAE's Automotive Engineering International, so we dug it out to give you a rundown of its specifications. The first thing that must be pointed out is that contrary to popular belief, this engine is entirely different from the V10 used by the Lamborghini Gallardo. The Lambo engine was designed for high RPMs, while the S6/S8 V10 was put together for high torque and fuel economy.The 5.2L V10 is built for two different outputs between the S6 and the S8 applications. The S6 receives a version that puts down 435 hp at 7000 rpm and churns out 398 ft-lbs of torque, while the S8's creates 450 hp at 6800 rpm and also produces 398 ft-lbs of

Mercedes-Benz is confusing the blog out of us with its nomenclature. Sure, it’s usually pretty straightforward: one letter for the class, three numbers for the (approximate) engine displacement. Tack on 4Matic for all-wheel-drive, chop off a zero and add AMG for the performance models. But they just about lost us on this one. In Frankfurt Mercedes unveiled two new hybrid versions of the S-Class: the S300 Bluetec Hybrid with diesel-electric power, and the S400 Hybrid with gas-electric power. In Los Angeles, however, they took the wraps off the S400 Bluetec Hybrid. Still with us? Well, they lost us, too. This version packs a V6 diesel coupled with an electric motor to provide 265 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, resulting in what Mercedes calls V8 performance with four-cylinder economy: 0-60 in 7.2 seconds and 40.5 mpg on the highway. It pains us to see a dead horse beaten so rigorously, but the folks at Mercedes have yet to stop. But then, they did paid a lot for that horse. The SLR project that then-Daimler-Benz undertook in partnership with its F1 racing partner, McLaren, never went as well as hoped. Sales were disappointing, and although the car’s performance put it into the upper echelons of autodom, it never succeeded at giving its competition a real run for their money. And at half a million bucks, it’s a lot of money to run for. Rather than cut their loses, Mercedes and McLaren have opted instead to turn out additional derivations. After the “standard” SLR coupe came the 722, which was widely derided for having ruined the ride with little additional benefit. A racing version, dubbed 722 GT, followed. Rumors circulated long ago that additional body-styles were under consideration – what are they talking about, a shooting brake? – but only the open-air version made it to production.

Suzuki was obviously trying to tap into the So. Cal. culture of the LA Auto Show when it tasked Andry Specialty Vehicles to create the SX4-based Makai concept. After lopping off the roof, shaving the door handles and adding a NACA-like duct in the hood, they sprayed down the sedan in orange paint and accented it with the silver rollover hoop that provides another mounting point to attach a set of surfboards. LED running lights add some subtle flavor and 19-inch CEC wheels fill the widened wheel arches that frame four-wheel disc brakes with Rotora calipers.Although the exterior appointments are cool enough, our favorite feature is inside. Instead of fitting the concept seats – normally an ergonomic disaster – it looks like Suzuki made a trek to their corporate pool, plucked the chairs from around the frosted glass table and welded them inside. The hotrod sport sedan from the Stuttgart is the three-pointed star’s eight-cylinder answer to the Audi RS4 and BMW M3, and Benz’s stubborn obsession with the torque converter aside, it presents a compelling case for those on the market for a big ferocious 451-hp 6.3L V8 in a small German package.Mercedes even brought out the head of AMG, all the way from Affalterbach, Germany, to unveil the car personally. We've berated the styling of the Lexus IS-F at length, but throw the Southern California team over at FiveAxis into the mix and we're ready to drive it out the front doors of the LA Auto Show. The combination of a custom six-inch wide body kit, Satin Black Pearl Paint and Satin Bronze accents make this IS-F a sports sedan we'd be happy to roll in. The installation of FiveAxis' own custom 20-inch wheels (20x8.5 in front and 20x10.5 out back), swathed in the same bronze hue as the ducting, diffusers and exhausts, ties everything together, and the lowered ride height provided by the Tein adjustable coilovers brings it all down to earth, literally.Performance is aided by a custom exhaust system and what FiveAxis is calling a "Stage 2" engine package. What that means is beyond us, but we're sure it's got potential. After GM’s introduction of three compact cars at the 2007 New York Auto Show - the Beat, Groove, and Trax - they left it up to the public to decide which one would be produced. Well, more than 1.8 million people worldwide voted on GM’s online survey, and one has beaten down the competition. At the 2007 LA Auto Show, Bob Lutz announced that a vehicle based on the Chevy Beat concept will go into global production outside the North America in mid-2009. Production will begin in South Korea where the car was originally created at GM’s design studio in Bupyeong. GM is still undecided as to whether the Beat will be eventually sold in the United States. Two years after unveiling the fuel cell-powered FCX concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda today revealed the production version of the car that will be available next summer, along with a name and a price. The car now known as the FCX Clarity will be available to retail customers starting in mid-2008 for a three year lease. The $600/month price tag will include all maintenance and collision insurance. Unlike GM's Project Driveway program, Honda made it clear that engineers won't be following these cars around. People will be able to come into a Honda dealer, sign the papers and drive away. At least if they live in southern California. Initially, the cars will only be available to customers in areas where hydrogen filling stations are available. The production version remains true to the concept with the only real change being the nose, which has been stretched a few inches to provide for some crush space. The rear-wheel-drive Hyundai Coupe is mere hours away from being debuted at the 2007 LA Auto Show, but we’re too excited to wait. These shots were taken minutes ago on the show floor, and reveals that the car Hyundai will have on hand is wearing orange and sporting styling cues not seen on the car that was spied at a marketing event last week. For instance, the wheels on the model debuting later today are different and much more attractive than those on the earlier car. This car’s front end also appears to be different than the earlier marketing car, with a chin spoiler in black hanging off of what appears to be a larger lower air intake. Finally, there’s also what appears to be black trim ahead of the rear wheel that could be for show, could be a faux scoop or may be a protective piece that’s pulled off before the debut. Jaguar’s stylish new XF sedan that cannot be anything short of a complete success made its first appearance on North American soil at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. Engine options consist of two 4.2-liter V-8s — a naturally aspirated variant making 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, the other a supercharged mill that makes 420 horsepower and 408 lb-ft of torque. A replacement for Nissan’s stylish and popular Murano crossover SUV debuts at the LA show next week. Nissan will follow that up with a concept vehicle that uses minivan-type sliding doors for what the automaker calls an “exploration of the next generation of family vehicles” at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Next week’s LA show will also give North American buyers their first look at the 480-horsepower GT-R, which features a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6, full-time all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned transmission that uses Auburn Hills-based supplier BorgWarner’s dual-clutch system. Ford have decided help us start our weekend off with a bang by announcing the Ford Mustang Bullitt will make it's world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show next month as well as releasing a first teaser image (see above). The new Bullitt will deliver a perfect balance of power, performance and a look of quiet intensity, and will hit dealership in early 2008.That is all Ford have told us so far, fortunately a few specifications were leaked to various forums earlier this month, which we suspect was done intentionally by Ford. Now we also know the Bullitt will feature a “FR Power Pack” with an estimated power output of 312hp which is obviously nothing to get too excited about. Diesel power is the hot ticket at Le Mans right now after the dominant win by Audi's R10 this year and Peugeot coming next year. But technology always moves on in racing (unless you're talking Nascar, but that's a whole other story). By the middle of the next decade, racers will likely have moved on to something else, and Acura is playing off of parent Honda's fuel cell efforts by showing drawings of a potential fuel cell powered Le Mans racer. It's unlikely a racer will look much like any of these drawings, but some of the technology could make it to the track. This is the BMW I wanted to drive, not the hyped-up Hydrogen 7. I first saw a 535d more than a year ago in the back shop of Gale Banks Performance. The car was the diesel-tuner's facility for research and evaluation but wasn't available for a spin around the block during my visit. The guys in the shop, however, were nearly speechless with regards to its performance. Fast-foward to the LA Auto Show and BMW announces it will offer performance diesel engines in North America, starting in 2008. BMW did not reveal which engines or vehicle models will be introduced. One has to expect, however, that the 535d in some form will be one of the first. The move comes as BMW says its Advanced Diesel will meet the strict 50-state emissions standards. I arranged to drive the Honda Civic GX in an extended test after the holidays, but I wanted to offer a capsule review following a short 5-minute drive during the LA Auto Show. I'm a fan of natural gas as a fuel and have been interested in the practical week-to-week possibilities of a CNG-powered car since Honda started promoting Phill, the home-based refueling station.Cost and convenience aside, my first impression of the GX is the lack of snap in the throttle. There is a reduction of power when using natural gas in the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The GX is rated at 113 horsepower while a gas-powered model pumps out 140 horsepower. The GX is also heavier, so the car seems lazy or sluggish at times.But the real values in the GX are fuel costs and peace of mind knowing you're driving perhaps the cleanest production internal combustion engine available.
