EUROPE: Austrian town blossoms with green energy, Dead-End
For decades, the Austrian town of Güssing was a forgotten outpost not far from the rusting barbed-wire border of the Iron Curtain. Now it's at the edge of a greener frontier: alternative energy. Güssing is the first community in the European Union to cut carbon emissions by more than 90 percent, helping it attract a steady stream of scientists, politicians and eco-tourists. "This was a dead-end town and now we're the center of attention," said Maria Hofer, a lifelong resident, as she bought organic vegetables at a farmer's market. "It seems like every week we read about new jobs from renewable energy." Güssing's transformation started 15 years ago when, struggling to pay its electricity bill, the town ordered that all public buildings would stop using fossil fuels. Since then, Güssing has fostered a whole renewable energy industry, with 50 companies creating more than 1,000 jobs and producing heat, power and fuels from the sun, sawdust, corn and cooking oil. Signs reading "

Austrian firms eye biodiesel businesses in Indonesia
At least three Austrian companies are studying the possibility of becoming involved in the „green energy” business in Indonesia to help boost the development of biodiesel. „Energea, BioDiesel International and the Christof Group are discussing the biodiesel business with a number of leading Indonesian agribusiness companies,” Austrian Commercial Counselor Raymund Gradt was quoted as saying by Tuesday’s English daily The Jakarta Post. „The three Austrian companies could provide the technology to build biodiesel refineries jointly with local firms,” he said. He declined, however, to name their Indonesian counterparts as the two sides had been in discussions for more than a year, but had yet to reach any deals. The three Austrian companies are leading technology solution providers for biodiesel production and currently produce a total of 440,000 tons of biodiesel per annum, more than half of their country’s annual demand of around 700,000-800,000 tons. They are on a

Cuba protests Austrian bank's decision to stop serving Cuban customers
VIENNA, Austria: Cuba on Wednesday protested the decision by an Austrian bank recently bought by a U.S. consortium to stop serving Cuban customers. "For us, this action is unacceptable," Norma Goicochea Estenoz, Cuba's ambassador to Austria, told reporters at the Cuban Embassy. BAWAG P.S.K., linked to the collapsed U.S. commodities broker Refco, was bought in December by a consortium headed by New York-based private equity company Cerberus Capital Management. Since U.S. law prohibits not only American businesses but also their subsidiaries abroad from conducting any commerce with Cuban nationals, the bank said earlier this month it had terminated its relationship with its Cuban customers. The consortium won a bid to buy BAWAG in mid-December. EU regulators cleared the sale at the end of February and the takeover is expected to be completed next month. Goicochea Estenoz, speaking in Spanish through a translator, said the embassy had been in touch with several Austrian ministries an

Austrian chicken lay ‘dyed Easter eggs’
Vienna, April 6 (DPA) A small flock of hens owned by a chicken breeder in Tyrol, western Austria, offer a time-saving alternative to dying your Easter eggs, Austrian media reported Friday. Karin Sprenger’s clucks, cross-breeds between the South American Araucana chicken and local domestic hens - lay green eggs, the report said. The chicken farm owns only 10 of the Easter egg producing hens, originally acquired from a local animal fair. Shape and taste of the eggs were similar to normal eggs, Sprenger said. The only downside was that the chickens lay eggs only every other day, so the supply of the light green eggs is limited. The chicken themselves are more mundanely coloured - black, grey or brown. The colour of an egg is determined in the last five centimetres of the hen’s fallopian tubes, where the lime glands are situated. The South American Araucana hen normally lays blue eggs.
