Manila through the eyes of an Aussie
When people find out that I am from the Philippines, and it turns out that they’re thinking of traveling there, the usual question that they ask me is “is it safe to travel there?” I have been living in Manila since 1980, and lived 27 years with only minor cuts and bruises, usually caused by my own clumsiness. The Philippines capital, with a population of 11 million, is bustling to the point of being chaotic. It has its share of traffic jams, crime, poverty and pollution. The sight of heavily armed men outside shops and banks, and signs imploring visitors to leave guns at the door, may well unsettle those of a delicate disposition. But none of that - with the p

Aussie Banks – Which ones to Buy?
ABN Amro came up with their latest recommendation of Australian Banking Stocks. The table below summarizes their views. I already hold Babcock and Brown (BNB) and per my post on this stock, I bought the stock last month and still think it is a buy. There will continue to be volatility in the markets for the next few weeks so look to buy on weakness. In terms of the retail banks, the Big 4 are still performing well despite all the Sub-Prime mess from the US. They are still showing above average EPS growth and paying very healthy dividends. Of the 4 retail banks, NAB is my top pick due its leading position and exposure in the business lending and wealth management (through MLC) areas. Also it has a proven management team, whereas some of the other banks have recently had a change in management. Westpac is also highly rated due to its strong revenue growth relative to other 3 banks. Simply put, all balanced portfolios should have some banking sector stocks in their portfolios and on any m

Another barmaid, from this very samebar, was fined $500 dollars for helping her beer can crushing co-worker to hang spoons from her nipples. Very enterprisingyoung ladies I am sure. I bet that bar is popular with the locals, despite the police statement declaring that the fines "send a clear message... that.we will not tolerate this type of behavior." hhhmm, bet the barmaids in question get more than enough tips to offset their fines....what do you think?

      Humor jokes-Aussie salesman
An Aussie salesman drove into a small town in the far south of New Zealand, where a small circus was playing.A sign read: "Don't Miss the Amazing Maori." The salesman bought a ticket and sat down. There, under the Big Top, in the centre ring, was a table with three walnuts on it.Standing next to it was a middle aged Maori.Suddenly, the Maori dropped his pants, whipped out his huge male member and smashed all the walnuts with three mighty swings! The crowd erupted in applause and the Maori was carried off on their shoulders.Fifteen years later the salesman visited the same little town, found the same circus, and saw the same faded sign that read, "Don't Miss the Amazing Maori."He couldn't believe the old guy was still alive, much less still doing his act!He bought a ticket.Again, the centre ring was illuminated. This time, however, instead of walnuts, three coconuts were placed on the table. The old Maori stood before them, then suddenly dropped his pants and smashed the coconuts with t

TWO bombings, drug arrests and debate about air safety in Indonesia have failed to deter Australian tourists. It seems Bali is back. According to Garuda Indonesia, flight schedules between Sydney and Bali that added 3000 seats to the route have been a resounding success and its new Sydney flight is recording average loading of 90 per cent. The airline's high load factors reflect a rise of more than 50 per cent to 85,860 in the number of Australians visiting Bali in the first half of the year. The record, 267,500, was set in 2004. Bali is Australia's fourth most popular holiday destination behind New Zealand, Thailand and the US. Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com

Clemency difficult for Aussie on death row
THE guilty plea of an Australian sentenced to death in Vietnam for heroin trafficking makes it difficult to know if he can win clemency, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today. Tony Manh, 40, of NSW, was yesterday convicted by a Ho Chi Minh City court of trafficking almost one kilogram of the drug.Manh was arrested in March with the heroin hidden on his body as he was about to board a flight to Sydney. The Australian Government plans to lobby Vietnam to commute Manh's death sentence to a jail term once the appeals process has been exhausted.Mr Downer today said the Government had played a part in achieving this outcome for four Australians originally sentenced to death in Vietnam."I've no idea what would happen in this particular case as I understand that Tony Manh has actually pleaded guilty - but in four previous cases, we have successfully appealed for clemency,'' he told Southern Cross Broadcasting."That's not to say we will be successful this time.''Mr Downe

Dry Australian Landscape - The real Aussie Bliss?
Australian Grazing Field - a Dry LandscapeDry Australian LandscapeWhen I saw this photo, I immediately thought of the Windows XP desktop background "Bliss" that many will know so well. It depicts an artificially green meadow with a perfect sky in the background, and some distant mountains. Well, this photo shows a far from perfect landscape, with the dry, parched grass and hot looking sky, but I suppose you could call this the "Aussie Bliss". This photo was taken near Goondiwindi, in Queensland, Australia. This photo differs from the "rule of thirds" we have been seeing lately - the photo is plainly comprised of two sections split vertically by the tree line. Both the curve of the clouds and the pattern of the grass incline the viewer's attention towards the center-right of the picture, meeting the horizon as it reaches the edge of the image. The main feeling conveyed by this picture seems to be one of dryness, of a starved countryside that is deprived of it's utmost source of vitality

Training “Quiet” the Brilliant Aussie Way
At dinner, Kiera lies by my chair while we eat. She likes to monitor my eating as she knows she gets my leftovers when I’m done. If I take too long, she starts “talking” to tell me to hurry up. Andrew finally gets annoyed and wants me to discipline her to get her to stop being pushy. So I remember Suzanne Clothier’s time-out lesson where you remove the dog from where you are for a few moments to essentially help the dog “reorient” itself toward better self-control. I decide that the next time Kiera talks, I’ll put her in a time-out. I don’t have to wait very long. She talks, I say, “Oops, so sorry…” and close her in the bathroom (right off our kitchen) for a minute, telling her she can come out once she’s quiet. She gets quiet immediately, so I tell her “Good Girl” and let her out. She lies down and behaves — for 30 seconds. Then she starts talking again. So I say, “Oops” again and put her back i

      Aussie women blow off cobwebs
A WELL-rested Australia will be out to maintain its recent dominance over New Zealand when the two countries renew their women's cricket rivalry in Darwin this week. The Southern Stars completed a 5-0 whitewash of New Zealand during last year's Rose Bowl series in Brisbane, before beating the old foes in the four-nation quadrangular tournament in March. Australia has not played since then. But despite almost five months apart, new Australian coach Lisa Keightley maintains the traditional trans-Tasman rivalry will have her side ready to fire against the White Ferns. "This is the off-season, so it might take a few games for us to blow off the cobwebs,'' Keightley said from Darwin. "But it's a very strong rivalry. It's like it always is with Australia and New Zealand, it's hard fought.'' The series begins with a Twenty20 match on Thursday at Gardens Oval, Darwin, followed by five limited-overs matches on July 21, 22, 25, 28 and 29. Keightley said N

The photos are from that gig.I've bigged up Farryl Purkiss before. His self-titled sophomore album was one of my picks of 2006 (and the lovely "Better Days" one of my songs of the year). He performed accompanied only by his guitar and a minimalist drummer. Having toured extensively internationally, he is making an impression with his mellow acoustic sounds.
