It is hours before sunrise on Wednesday morning and I am awakened by two raccoons crawling all over me. I rip my sleeping bag off my shivering body, bolt out of my [...]

      Reclaiming Augustine
Protestant apologists, especially of the Reformed/Calvinistic variety, love to claim Augustine as an early Church Father who professed their unique beliefs on grace, predestination, authority, and many other topics. I personally think such an exercise is an ahistorical grasping at straws and a false reading of a very Catholic man.Dave Armstrong recently made a post on his blog that goes a long way towards proving that point. On all of the following doctrines, Dave has provided quotes from the works of Augustine that show the Catholicity of his thinking:Apostolic successionBaptism"Catholic" ChurchChurch authorityContraceptionDeuterocanonical booksEternal securityEucharistic adorationReal Presence in the EucharistFaith AloneIrresistible graceMary: Mother of God, perpetual virgin, sinlessSacrifice of the MassMeritMortal and venial sinThe papacy and the Roman SeePenancePrimacy and preeminence of PeterPrayers for the deadPurgatoryRelicsInvocation/intercession/veneration of the saintsScriptu

      St. Augustine Shopping
I was talking to my cousin in Florida few minutes ago and she did mention about the St. Augustine shopping, the Uptown Saturday Night in St. Augustine, Florida. It is a festive atmosphere filled with hospitality and special deals. This event will occur on the last Saturdays in October and November which focus is on the incredible antique shopping opportunities available in the Nation’s Oldest City. On that evening, the antique district concentrated along San Marco Avenue comes to life with lively street music and endless opportunities to shop for antiques, rare books and even authentic Spanish treasure. I’m sure there’s going be a lot of fun especially to those antique collectors out there. I wish I can go there but it’s too far. During this monthly event, participating antique dealers provide great workshops covering a variety of antique related topics, book stores provide readings and book signings by local authors, and art galleries feature exhibit openings of some of th

Spell-checker in St. Augustine changes area's designated activity. Or not?
When the Ol’ Man and I visit St. Augustine, we try to be aware of the local rules, even the ones that seem to have been written when the rule-makers were sipping a little too much somethin-somethin’ from the legendary Fountain of Youth. Not everybody is as attentive as we are, I reckon. We watched countless doodleheads walk by the sign in this photograph, and not one of them stopped to buss anybody. That's surprising for such a popular honeymoon destination.Maybe the sign confuses people, which is understandable. The top section grants permission for some healthy, non-idle, public lip-lock. But the bottom part isn't as open-minded as the upper, advising bussers of a 10-minute time limit and, even more puzzling, a stern warning of “no parking.”My sisters used to tell me that parking and bussing often naturally occur at the same time, in the same spot. So the restrictions on these complementary activities do seem a bit baffling, don’t you think?Oh well. Me and the Ol’ Man we

      Augustine, Pelagius, and Andrew Fuller
Pelagius (considered heretical): Everyone is born neither a sinner nor a saint. We become sinners through our own choices, but we could have chosen otherwise. Adam was just a single man and his sin did not affect anyone but himself. Just as Adam decided to be a sinner, so can we. When we are born we are just like Adam was before the sin of the fall. Everyone has the ability to either do good or to do bad. The reason why most people choose to be bad is because of the abundance of bad examples. This free will is God’s gift of grace to us.  Therefore, we can be perfect and without sin if we simply choose to. Further, man is able to find his own salvation. B.B. Warfield summarizing the view: “Man was thus a machine, which, just because it was well made, needed no Divine interference for its right working.”1 In short: denied original sin. Augustine: We are not only unwilling to do good, but also unable. Only Adam was born perfect, but as the result of his sin the f

Thomas Augustine Arne.

      St. Augustine and Pornography
John Piper reads quotes of St. Augustine’s confessions and makes the correlation to the temptations that Augustine faced, with the temptations that men face in this “advanced” modern society which promotes the disease of pornography as if it were a tasty fruit. *NOTE: The reader is not Catholic, but he is reading the words of St. [...]

      St. Augustine Haunted Pub Tour
Awhile ago we took a long weekend and went to St. Augustine.  I love a good ghost story so we planned on doing a ghost tour while there.  St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied city in the continental United Sates. A city with that much history is bound to have its share of ghost stories. Mrs. Mai Tai looked through the available ghost tours and there are quite a few to choose from.  She chose the Haunted Pub Tour.  Awesome. You get to listen to ghost stories and you get to drink as it is essentially a pub crawl to allegedly haunted bars. We visited four different bars or it might have been three.  I don’t remember the evening got a little fuzzy.  I had my digital camera with me and the guide will tell you where to snap some pictures.  We walked past an old cemetery and the guide said take a few shots and see if any ghost orbs show up. I snapped a few and there was a white ball in the photo. It could be a ghost orb or it could be dust or particulates in the ai

Saint Augustine | Confessions | on Love
"O Lord, do I love Thee? Thou didst strike on my heart with Thy word and I loved Thee .... But what do I love when I love Thee? Not the beauty of bodies nor the loveliness of seasons, nor the radiance of the light around us - so gladsome to our eyes, nor the sweet melodies of songs of every kind, nor the fragrance of flowers and ointments and spices, nor manna and honey, nor limbs delectable for fleshly embraces. I do not love these things when I love my God.And yet I love a light and a voice and a fragrance and a food and an embrace when I love my God, who is a light, a voice, a fragrance, a food, and an embrace to my inner man ... This it is that I love when I love my God ...That same voice speaks indeed to all men, but only they understand it who join that voice, heard from outside, to the truth that is within them. And the truth says to me: "Neither heaven nor earth nor any body is thy God." Their own nature says the same. They see that the substance of a part is less than that of th

A Little Something for St. Augustine
I've been very busy today, and now I'm about to pass out b/c I'm so tired. But, I wanted to at least post something for today, the feast of St. Augustine. So, here's a link to an entry on St. Augustine that I made for the Catholic Defense Directory. It's a pretty good collection of articles on his life and thought. I hope you find it beneficial.Pax Christi, phatcatholic

The Prince of Wales: A Taste of England in the Heart of Spanish St. Augustine, Florida
It has been years since I have had a good Sticky Toffee Pudding. Honestly I have only had it 3 times prior– once in Ireland, once in Scotland, once in New York City. Do you know how hard it is to find it in America? Yes, yes you can get it in a can from Heinz, but is that good sticky toffee pudding? I don’t know, I don’t think I have ever had it, unless it was served to me in one of these places. God forbid. But in just those three occasions it has become my favorite dessert. I don’t like toffee in general, so I probably never would have had it if I ordered it from a menu. But once, I was in a restaurant and I saw a server walk by with this beautiful shining pudding, plated on top of a pile of silken vanilla custard the smell was out of this world! I decided right then and there I wanted it! Sticky Toffee Pudding despite its name does not taste like toffee. It tastes almost like a spice cake, and since that first time I have been hooked. As I have a sixth sense for finding

St Augustine, FL: Food Mecca of Florida? So Far, So Good…
You know the saying “Ask and you shall receive”? Well I asked for good Cuban Food and St. Augustine, Florida delivered big time! I had a great foodie experience in St. Augustine enjoying Cuban food and all of my favorites, in one day! It was a big challenge, but I was totally up for it! In one day I managed to consume that wonderful Cubano Sandwich I had been craving, delicious Sangria, decent Gelato, the best Fish n’ Chips I have had in a long time AND the crowing glory, Sticky Toffee Pudding! Let me first say that St. Augustine is a wonderful place with so much to do. It is charming, full of unique and fun shops to window shop and just steeped in history. If you love interesting architecture, there is so much for the eye to enjoy. It is the oldest city in North America, it is where Ponce de Leon sought the Fountain of Youth and it houses the oldest restaurant in North America, which is where I was to find a great example of the Cubano Sandwich. Want a little history with your

Where Augustine and Calvin Went Wrong
Christians often use the term "The Fall" to describe the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the garden and their subsequent punishment. Not only does this punishment effect Adam and Eve but all of humanity. Augustine and subsequently Calvin (Protestants) viewed this state of fallenness as total depravity. Aquinas (Roman Catholic) was not as severe. For Aquinas, the image of God in humanity was tarnished but not shattered. For both Catholics and Protestants, a great deal of theological weight is placed on this little narrative in Genesis chapters 2 and 3. But when we simply read the narrative without Augustine's theology imprinted upon it, it really says nothing about a "Fall," certainly not to the extent that the church has emphasized it.The RC church (officially) still reads this narrative as historical. Conservative protestants do likewise. Liberal protestants have read this as mythical but containing psychological truth about the state of estrangement between humanity and Go
