Plan Your Duct Work To Maximize Attic Space
Most houses built today use common trusses that don't provide for attic space like older homes framed with traditional rafters. In a recent post, Creating Storage Room With Attic Trusses, I pointed out the benefit of using attic trusses to create inexpensive storage space. In order to take advantage of that newly gained space it's important to plan your duct work installation with your HVAC contra

Creating Storage Room with Attic Trusses
An inexpensive way to create additional storage space in your new home is to use attic trusses instead of conventional "common trusses". Most modern homes that are built today use a common truss that doesn't really leave any usable space for storage. Older homes were framed using rafters and collar ties leaving significant attic space. Trusses are much more cost effective today and their use is considered the standard today. One way to get the best of both worlds is to specify an attic truss. Trusses can be designed to produce an open attic as shown in the picture. We specified attic trusses and ended up with a storage area in the attic that is approximately 48' long by 18' wide. As you can see we put a layer of plywood down to create a very nice storage room. Typically this type of upgra

Mother Places Dead Baby in Attic
According to police, the body of an 11-month-old girl that had been reported missing was found dead in the attic of her parents’ home.  Police said that the girl, Harmony Jude Creech, had been dead for several weeks, and that her mother, Johni Michelle Heuser, put the girl in the attic after she found her dead in the baby crib. The girl wasn’t reported missing until her father, Ronald Earl Creech II, came home from a 15 month deployment in Iraq to see his daughter.  Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins said that Creech was picked up by his mother at the Pope Air Force Base and taken to his daughter’s home close to Spring Lake.  When they got there they found that the baby was missing. Immediately and Amber Alert was issued, and as a result police later discovered the baby was placed in the attack.  Investigation is still underway, and an autopsy on the girl will be performed to try and determine exactly how she died.

Bats or Batts in the Attic… Learn The Difference
I thought you said we had Batts in the attic, not Bats in the attic. “Australia’s favorite insulation… PINK BATTS™ really make a difference to how your home feels all year around. They act as the ultimate barrier to heat entering your home during those hot summers, or being lost to the outside during chilly winters.” vs An upstate New York couple didn’t think a few bats in the attic were much of a problem when they were buying a house last summer….An exterminator says hundreds of bats had been living in the attic, leaving behind 3,500 pounds of droppings. (AP) How dumb do you have to be to not wonder about where all those animals are taking a dump if your house has more bats than your typical B-Movie Transylvanian Castle. Attic Wrap -- Another Energy Saving Technique
With Dupont's recent release of their Dupont (TM) Tyvek (R) Attic Wrap (TM), today's builder is armed with one more energy-saving tool to differentiate themselves from other builders.Without going into too much detail about the mechanics, methods and materials of Dupont's Attic Wrap, suffice it to say, it is similar in use and function to other Tyvek weatherization products . . . but specifically designed for roofing systems as a semi-permeable barrier to keep attics warmer in winter and cooler in summer.Attic Wrap, installed across the top of roof rafters (beneath roof decking), has a metalized surface that reflects heat, while also serving as a breathable membrane to allow moisture release. By creating a sealed space with less air movement, it reduces air flow through the insulation and the attic -- thereby cutting down on loss of conditioned air from the house, and the infiltration of attic air back into living space. Moisture reduction, channelling of water in the event of lea
